- This is an excerpt from a 13.5 minute piece I produced, shot and edited in 1976, sadly, not too long before Freddie's untimely demise. Here's the story: Freddie was in Austin to play at the Armadillo World Headquarters. Richard Halpin (who, at the time, had an organization called the Jail Arts & Education Project) got Freddie and his half-brother Bennie to play for the inmates at the Travis Co. Jail. The prisoners loved it. So did the musicians. I shot it with help from William McLellan & Linda Evans. It was shot with a single tube camera and recorded on a 1/2" reel-reel portapack. It is funky old video but a record of a terrific performance and selfless act by the late great artist, Freddie King.

His brother and former bass player Benny Turner is exactly the same way. As real and genuine as they come!
I appreciate BB's influence and Albert's swagger... but for this young man, Freddie was THE King!!!!!! Untouchable singer and guitar player in ANY genre.
andy.ronquillo1987 I saw BB, Albert and Freddie in a big auditorium in Denver in 1971. It was a 4-5 hour show with some serious head cutting. I was from Mississippi and hadn't been home for a long time. Hundreds of big legged black ladies, dressed to the 9s, were standing up, shaking it screaming, "BB, Freddie, I hear ya Daddy!" It made me real homesick. In 1972, I was partying with Freddie's band in Boulder motel, and the POleases came and arrested all of us. They let his hand go, but they kept me for 2 weeks, for possession of something you can buy all over town now. Just not suitcases full! Freddie was a kind, humble, giving man. Playing for the convicts was just the way he was. Oh, I was with a couple from Austin that day too.
im not bashing anything here. Huge fan of Freddie and all the legendary blues men but i dont understand ur emphasis on any genre cuz that just is not true.

Looks like 1970s Beta b/w video tape system, which had amazing sound capture on its tape. Much of the best 1970s live music footage you see was this stuff. This is truly one of the best videos on RUclips. As a painter I’ve studied it to capture the different angles of Freddie’s face that I couldn’t get off of photos.

Leon Russell had the good sense to include two acoustic numbers, "Walkin' By Myself" and "Dust My Broom", on Freddie's album "Getting Ready". This is a GREAT video and thanks SO much for creating and posting it! I miss Freddie terribly to this very day.

This is the best example I've ever seen and heard such a good blues groove. And he shot it while visiting a JAIL. Anyone who can make a joint like that ROCK is one of the BEST.

I was thinking the same thing. Not much good times happening behind bars. But I guess this would help take their minds off things for a minute. But I can't help but think some prisoners may not appreciate the irony. Still, a live Freddie king gig that comes to you - not bad!

"I'm not too good with this kind of guitar here" ... and then proceeds to play the living **** out of it, in a cramped jailhouse hallway no less. First class all the way. Like the album said, Freddie King truly was a blues master.

This is great. i remember seeing him open up for Grand Funk. He was one of the cats my Dad introduced me to on the record player at home. Thanks for posting. Most Jazz cats get too uppity and don't get deep into the blues. This obviously doesn't apply to cats like George Benson and Lou Donaldson, to name few.

Music is an amazing gift from God. Notice the smiles on the faces and how the mood changed when he started playing. Music transcends all barriers.
Thanks for posting that, that is one of the most awesome performances I have seen. I like how he always says he can't play an acoustic guitar... funny how that even though he supposedly can't play one, as soon as he touches it, blues just oozes out of it.... fantastic!
What a wonderful historical record. I was extremely moved to see the great Freddie King bringing his powerful music to the prison population in such an elegant and humble way. This great human being would be elevated to the spiritual world in less than 2 months after this recording, on 12/28/1976. Thank you very much for this wonderful historical record. Nick B We never got anything but gospel concerts in Arkansas. But Johnny Cash donated a lot of money to build the chapel at Cummins and the Varner Unit. He was a "walk the walk" kinda Christian.

What a great job, this is a real special video. Every time Freddie picked up a guitar, he put his heart and soul into preforming. This really shows the love he has for people and the Blues.

Right on! What talent! Freddy is my favorate of the Kings and probably my favorate of the great Bues men. He was a real guitar slinger and should be looked upon as an example in Rock Roll for any young guy or gal looking to learn how to play the guitar.
