This is nature, animals only fight when they have no other choice. Cheetahs can't pull out a weapon to fight their battles or run to the ER if they are critically injured. They are smart to avoid conflict, because an injured cheetah is a dead cheetah. Cheetah has so much invested in their speed, that when it comes time to fight they have no real defenses. Hyenas are not to be messed with, they also take leopards kills. It shows great ignorance on your part to make such a comment.

Naturally, they aren't as strong as a lot of big cats or other predators, they can't even kill their prey with one hard bite, they can only hold the wind pipe closed. Because of this, they can't risk a battle with a hyena. The cheetah would most likely loose, or get injured and unable to catch prey next time.

Perhaps they've come into conflict with it's pack before
Not afraid but smart, they know a hyena is not to be fucked with. It takes a male lion to kill a hyena and even then the male lion has to be careful of those powerful jaws. I watched two male lions catch a hyena stuck in the mud and one male dropped his guard and the hyena lashed out and latched on to the lions jaw and that lion backed off and let his brother finish, he did not attach the hyena again after being bitten and feeling the power of the jaws.
@TheRaptorsaur I'm no expert, but that's probably true. Even docile, medium sized dogs like golden retrievers could probably overpower a cheetah. But you have to remember that cheetahs are quick and know how to avoid danger. It would be extremely difficult for even a lion to actually catch a cheetah.

Not to argue here but hyenas actually are smarter than most animals in Africa. They know when to taunt a bigger, more lethal predator to steal its food... and know when they can win the fight straight up. The spotted hyena has been known to eat man. And attack humans more often than their big cat and wolf competition by far. Their teeth crush human bones like nothing. They don't play dead with bigger predators or get most food from being scavengers.

The Cheetah is built for speed. It cant be extremly fast and a strong fighter at the same time, that just wouldnt be balanced.
