My "aha" moment occurred when I realized the inherent power of incorporating open-ended questions into every strategy. It's humbling to admit that I have often found myself waiting for others to ask questions rather than taking the initiative to ask them myself.
Dear Teacher! Thank you for this interesting and useful class. My aja strategy is the last one, to pass from the simple Hi!, when I do not know people into a small talk. People I always find jogging in the park: what do you love to do on weekends? It is an amazing open question and not SO personal. THANK YOU! Great online class. Blessings!
Hi Annemarie.. I am an introvert person and i find difficulties to start the small talk. But your tips how to start the small talk really open my mind that small talk could be useful and might break the iceberg. Thank you so much... looking forward your next videos.
(How are you holding up) is my aha part :) its new to me and i learned a new way for asking about someone’s situation... the second thing is starting conversation by telling compliment to someone has really inspire me cause im too shy to start conversation with strangers
hello teacher, i am from Colombia and i am happy to Learn english with your videos, i appreciate your videos because i can understand all that you speak into this, step by step i feel better and i feel that i am improving in diferent skills, thank you.
It feels like you’re reading my mind. I always had difficulty getting small talk started! I had awkward moment with my kids friends mum at school and didn’t know what to ask or say after how are you doing. I have one of my son’s friends BD party this weekend and I am going to try having a small talk rather than just dropping my son to the party! Thanks 😊
My a-ha moment was "finding the common ground". This task becomes more of psychological strategy where you tune yourself to the other person and see what qualities/skills you can identify and talk about. Thank you for this insight!
Thank you for sharing, Anna! You are correct, tuning into the other person or keeping your ear out, can be a mental process. It is worth the effort to keep the conversation open.
@@Speakconfidentenglish You are my inspiration of how I want to speak and pose myself both in public and privately. Respectful, compassionate and calm. Thank you for replying and sharing your valuable knowledge ❤️

I came cross your channel and I was so excited because I had been looking for this kind of work English teaching channel for a very long time! It’s so useful, helpful to people who work in English speaking countries. I shared your channel to my social group that has 500 members.👍👍👍
@@Speakconfidentenglish Thank you for your reply! I was so glad you saw my comments finally! 😃👍I left a message in two of your other videos to ask if you can do some videos in this kind of situations: when some of my colleagues says he is going to have a surgery. how can I respond? Should I buy a gift and what kind of gifts are appropriate? I want to be caring, but I also know personal health is very confidential in the USA. Also, if my manager give each team member a Christmas present, should I buy one for my manager? Any recommendations about how to choose a present for colleagues and boss? Chatting without purpose can feel awkward and be frustrating. I'm glad the examples shared in my lesson have given you some ideas for future small talk situations.
Hi, Annemarie, thanks for all the videos, I learnt a lot about polite and kind way speaking English, very useful while I am working in the UK! I would like some tips about - if I need leave the meeting (both physical and online) early for next appointment, how can I politely excuse myself from the meeting?
Hi Annemarie. So my "aha" moment was when you say; inquire about their day or wellbeing and one question that I never heard before it's; how are you holding up? haha having content to discus is very important.
Thank you Annemarie it’s so helpful! Make me ease to handle these small talks. So here’s to share my learnings responding to your questions at the end: 1. My “aha” moment: always ask an open up question to keep the conversation going in a polite and light way, with the objective of finding common area of interest. 2. The example that I’d like to try - i. Opinion + Open up question: I remember you do xxx, what do you think about this? Would you recommend?; Building strength and getting fit have been such a long journey for me, I love to know how do you stay up committed on your fitness goal? ii. Wellbeing + Open up question: The traffic here is always an issue, how could you hold it up?

I have a one year old son and I always find people initiating talks with me, like "oh, he's so cute. How old is he?" and I just keep answering questions and I get very uncomfortable. I just moved in to a European country and English is not my native language, so, I get stuck a lot in these situations. Could you tell me how can I keep these conversations going naturally?

Any form of small talks must be really sincere and concerning about your neighbours or friends and is built over time regardless of content. One important values of any form of relationship is not to made use and put other party on losing ends or disadvantages. Don't take other people kindness for granted. On off, show appreciation back automatically. Every human is with feeling and emotions, good or bad, generous or stingy, fake or real, our sixth senses is most reliable than any knowledge.
Hi this is great but can you also tell us how to answer the questions politely if someone asks us the same. Usually the non english speakers are giving replies more than starting a conversation in english. That will be r. helpful thankyou
As usual this an excellent video lesson. I'd love to try the first one that's a compliment + open-ended question. Today is the first time I heard the question: How are you holding up? and it's a great and new addition to my vocabulary notebook. Thank you so much Annemarie!!!
I'm so glad you've discovered some new questions to use for small talk! How are you holding up is a great one to use when someone is in a difficult situation.
I don't understand why people afraid to speak (in English). And I catch that! People are so afraid of judging other people that they don't want to start any conversation. When I was learning to speak as a child, I wasn't afraid of it. I have that to this day. So, remember if you had problems speaking as a child. If so, you will also be reluctant to speak the other language you are learning. There is only my opinion which I saw when I observed people who want to learn language. And what I was saying doesn't matter what kind of language it. I don't have difficult to speak English and I know that I made mistakes but really does not matter to me. It's just like skating. In Polen people said: If you don't fall over, you won't learn. (I don't know if in English is the same idiom?).
I refused to talk too much with an uber driver once. Anna, would you teach some topics which when we try to set up a conversation with someone who is not in the mood, what do we do at that situation?
I just love how are you holding up? And I have a friend who always visits me everyday, I'm thinking how to start or talk with🤔. Hi hope everything is good with you? you look a bit upset.
Asking about the place where I do my shopping sounds like pushing my boundaries. I wouldn't like this type of stuff. Too private, I am afraid. Especially if you live in a small town and hunting for decent clothes comes to be quite a tricky kind of sport😊.
Small talk is absolutely not my cup of tea. The most tricky part about interaction. For me it's like beating around the bush. Like a waste of time and energy. But I do understand it's necessary while communicating with English speakers.
