The fact that John Oliver and his team can pack more knowledge, humor, and honesty in one clip than most actual news organizations means either John Oliver is a news god descended from on high, or Fox, CNN, and MSNBC really are just that fucking terrible. Or maybe it's both.
John Oliver I must say this video saved me. in the last 3 years I started raising a small flock of back yard chickens. A uncle came to me and told me about a contract farming ad he'd seen and thought it would be a good move for me since I loved my girls and really enjoy them. But I had watched this literally the day before he showed me the ad. You saved me from leaping into a horrible situation.

While animal agriculture can certainly have negative environmental consequences, not all meat production methods are created equal. Some farming practices, such as regenerative agriculture, can actually have a net positive impact on the environment by improving soil health, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting biodiversity. Supporting these types of farming practices can help incentivize more sustainable and environmentally-friendly food systems. Regenerative agriculture is a holistic farming approach that seeks to improve soil health, increase biodiversity, and reduce carbon emissions. It emphasizes the use of cover crops, crop rotation, and reduced tillage to improve soil structure and promote soil health. It also often incorporates livestock grazing, which can help to sequester carbon in the soil and improve nutrient cycling. In contrast to conventional animal agriculture, which often relies on intensive confinement operations and large amounts of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, regenerative agriculture prioritizes the health of the soil and the surrounding ecosystem. This can lead to a more resilient and sustainable food system that supports both environmental and human health. While regenerative agriculture is still a relatively small part of the overall food system, it has gained increasing attention and support in recent years as a potential solution to some of the negative environmental impacts of animal agriculture. By supporting farming practices that prioritize soil health and biodiversity, we can help to incentivize more sustainable and environmentally-friendly food systems.
Farmers are still committing suicide at considerably higher rates than the rest of our population. They are squeezed to hard, and they are all going to need some protection.
Well technically physicians have the highest suicide rate, but at least they are rich. This farmin'issue mirrors the one seen in my country, except it's spanish contractors with Moroccab farmers. Colonialism is alive and well
There was also a study that showed that the majority of farmers working in slaughterhouses get PTSD but aren't able to get counseling due to insurance granted by their jobs
Right after we take away farming subsidies from growers of corn, soybean, rice, wheat, cotton, and peanuts, right? Because agricultural subsidies come from our tax dollars, and these farmers in particular even without these subsidies easily make 60K a year which is substantially above the poverty line. Do that and THEN we can be worried about all the unsubsidized chicken farmers at the poverty level and below.

This is not a subject that I would expect John Oliver to cover with his fine tooth comb. That being said, it is good to see someone stand up for these farmers.
No nitpicking in here. These presentations are thoroughly researched. The model described here is a system in favour of big companies making filthily huge profits at the cost of poor farmers.
my grandfather was one of those Alabama chicken farmers willing to attend and speak at the town hall meetings, he was threatened before and after but after Vietnam, nothing scared him anymore, I'm very proud he was willing to represent those afraid for their and their family's health and financial safety
I was thinking how in the fuck is this legal? And the dude just picked the side he wanted instead of actually going by the votes, and no one stopped him. Thats an absolutely insane way to vote.
Yeah, I really wonder how this shit works. We invented the very thing called "counting" since like 4000-10000 years BC (I don't know history), yet they don't even use it.
Welcome to the United States congress, where you can win a government position by default when you don't have competition, get funded by millionaires who then bribe, I mean LOBBY you to do what they want, even if it is against the needs if the people that it is literally your job to represent, and can get your opinion to be law simply by being the loudest person in the room.
As a chicken farmer from Australia, it is shocking to see the treatment chickens get in the US. Here in Australia it is compulsory to give them sunlight and toys to play with.
It's important that American know they have bad quality meat and the animals are treated awful, we (in the UK) are worried that when we leave the EU America (Trump regime) is going to make us do certain thing to get trade deals and having a similar meat farming system to you guys is one of them.
***** Well, when you're bought and paid for, and don't even look up to even pretend to count... You can say whatever the fuck you want. You still make the bennies, and fuck chicks.
surfitlive Unfortunately, even if it's brought up as an infringement on the farmer's right of free speech, the government &/or companies will state that they are free to speak however they want, but they will be held accountable for what they say(which isn't illegal). It's the reason I hate the whole "America is better, cause we have free speech" rhetoric directed at other countries. All speech is free, it's how much/little accountability people face for free speech. At most they could try and get them for falsifying information on how successful the business would be, except that even then, the companies would defend themselves with something along the lines of "we didn't say it would be successful for you; you just heard what you wanted to hear".
MonaGamie This is VERY if not EXTREMELY common in House commuttee votes. If you watch any C-Span show, the process goes like this: debate & push issues, all yea's cast, all no's cast, the head chair of committee says whatever he or she is in favour of won. The opposing people submit for a ballot count. The head of committee pigeonholes bill to a TBD time. We didn't get to see it, but I am sure that is what happened and they will give a vote on the bill if that is not what they were already gathering for. But yeah, happens to nearly all bills.
And some people want no regulation. Corporations shouldn't be treated like people. They need regulations to protect consumers and employees from businesses.
Nah man, it's working just fine. There were plenty of punishments/references/euphemisms for death translated in english (and or introduced here from other countries/places) you could have jumped on. But you had to think: hmmmmm, which Japanese thing can I reference this time? Sorry dude. You is weib!
The way to fight abusive corporations is not regulations. It's eminent domain. They should be sent to prison by virtue of the fact that they're constantly trying to be abusive. Don't give them rules to follow, give them the death sentence.
*top is firsthand story about chicken plants, bottom is about the chickens!* I live in small town Kansas, and we fought like no tomorrow to keep a Tyson plant out of our town. They ravage farms with their runoff and smell for a mile radius. If our protesting didn’t work, many friends of mine (and my family!) would have lost a water source due to contamination, had crops ruined and had the stench of chicken plant radiating through our home. Also, my family rescued some chickens from a different plant b4 they were taken, and we got one with a LITERAL HOLE IN ITS NECK! They also had almost no feathers, peck wounds and overgrown beaks/broken beaks. Some didn’t even last a year and some are still kickin it. I have had a few chickens since I was little, just for fun, and they have personalities and souls just like a dog or cat would! I had one that would sit on my shoulder like a parrot, and no living thing deserves to be treated like chickens in plants!
+Noah Parker It's more fun to watch when you just hate everyone all the time. People are scum. Especially corporations and lobbyists. Notice the theme in these videos? At the core of every issues there's a company throwing money around, and politicians scrambling to catch the money as it falls.

Here is a common corporate practice: You're farmer Joe. You own a tomato farm. One day a representative of Wal-Mart shows up at your house and says, "Hey Joe. I tried one of your tomatoes and was blown away. We'd like to stock our local store with them." You say, "Sure!" A few months pass and the rep returns, "Joe, your tomatoes are a hit. We'd love to expand into 3 more stores." You say, "I'd have to expand and buy new equipment." He responds, "Don't worry. It will be worth it for you. Just keep those tomatoes coming." A few months later the rep is back. "Great news Joe. We want your tomatoes in 100 stores. "Joe is stoked and gladly expands. A month later the rep is back again. "Well Joe, I'm sorry to say but we are ending our business with you. Good luck." Now Joe is stuck producing enough tomatoes for 100 stores with no buyer. Wal-Mart tells him, "I suppose we could help you out. We will buy your farm for half of what it is worth. As a bonus, we will let you stick around as an employee of Wal-Mart." Now Joe is doing more work for less money. I went to school with a guy who does the rep work and he would tell me how he would laugh his ass off after ripping off those, "Idiot farmers."

Thank you for this. I live in a rural area - with quite a few farmers - many of them are chicken farmers. And yes, many of them go to local farming markets - though, when I say 'many' - that 'many' is actually only about 10-15% of the farmers that I know or are acquainted with. They've tried telling me what all they have to deal with when it comes to contracts and the corporations that they basically do all of the work for, but none of them have been able to lay it out like this. I'd say that I'd share this video with all of them and try to start up some sort of local chicken market, but none of them have access to the internet. I'm thinking I should rip this video off of YT through any of the many 'rip video from RUclips' websites out there, convert it to a format that can be played on DVD players and hand out copies at the next farmer's market I go to here in town. Where it goes from there, I have no idea.... but this has fucking pissed me off enough to get up off of my lazy American ass and try to do ANYTHING that might help bring about some sort of change in these people's lives. Again, thank you. Thank you, John Oliver. =')
This is a good idea! Thing is, they probably know even better than John Oliver. How have they been fighting back so far? What kind of country do we live in where we don't actually take a vote? You can't just let everyone say "Aye" or "No" and then choose one or the other based on your bias. Why don't they have people write down their votes and count them? Real legislative systems don't let one man decide the vote based on what he thought he heard or what he wanted to hear. The most infuriating thing to me in this whole video was that section.
+digimondudeify Parliamentary procedure allows any member of the committee to demand a "division of the assembly" if he thinks the chair miscalled the aye/no vote. This vote can take the form of a show of hands, standing in place, or even a roll call. That said, it is depressing to see such a logical amendment be struck down...
Well, the chair shouldn't let members demand a division if the outcome is obvious...that's a dilatory maneuver, and is prohibited. However, I thought that the vote in that committee was rather close. If I was in the membership, I would have demanded a division...
+digimondudeify im more concerned he based it on people saying a word over a count over the fact he decided to allow the vote to be voted by saying aye or no

That's not how America works. Members of Congress would have to see it, and vote on it. A large number of them are funded by these companies, so they wouldn't care if they saw this. The next U.S president is already establishing that the country will be run by the same sorts of people who are in the pockets of corporations. In other words, only voters seeing this would count.

Sooner or later someone will be less scrupulous and do the thing you refuse to do for ethic sake. This is how it work and this is why capitalism suck. In capitalism system ethics and moral values are unsellable worthless products.
Yes - it is a cost and risk effective model especially if you're a very large corporation. It makes companies easily fireable through non-renewal and if there are any injuries/legal issues you have low repercussions.

I'd love John Oliver to come back to the UK and do one or two one-offs, aimed at the UK. I'd love to know what the situation is with chicken farming in the UK, for example and they're always explained so well in your show.
1) it's not capitalism's fault 2) it's accepting bad contracts' fault 3) no we can't have the government regulate all our lives simply because we might accept a bad deal.
I never understood how awful chicken was in North America until I went to Barbados where chickens are legitimately (unintentionally?) free range, i can't even eat it up here
+Da Red Russian Dude, there is a huge difference between not treating chicken like total shit and treating them better than humans, what are you even talking about? Treating chicken better can also pay off for the farmers, not if u Muricans are only willing to pay 5 ct per egg, though

+Da Red Russian Chicken is not a necessary part of your diet. A "hardworking single mother from Mexico" can buy cheap beans that can replace the nutrients in chicken, and she should know how to prepare them well considering she's from Mexico... I pray for the day when meat becomes an incredibly expensive luxury item. Then the fat cats of the meat industry will only be making money off of each other and will maybe treat animals and humans better.
John Oliver needs to get more control over this world and FAST. Bloody hell, why aren't the people with the power doing any-fucking-thing about issues?
because they got to a position of power by doing this exact same thing... they have no shame and will never do anything about it. The only solution is to vote for politicians with good intentions (good luck finding those..)
the sad thing is - YOU are in power. not only can you vote, but whats holding you back from going door to door trying to educate people on the issues so next time they vote the smart way?? i know you will say "but thats tedious hard work! and why should i have to do it??" - exactly. and this is why nothing changes.
Ed Bulnes Good intentions may be all good and well, but are worthless if they don't lead to good actions. A lot of the time people with good intentions can't implement them because they are being blocked by people that act egoistically (which is something most of us do, most of the time).
I love when John takes the side of the average American regardless of how those same people probably feel about him on many other topics. It's a refreshing sign of integrity.
But how many of us (consumers) are going to stop buying from these companies? Farmers are some of the most hard working people who make it possible for most humans to survive, and with there being so many middlemen and different companies between the farmers and the final sale to the consumer, it's sad that the originator of the product sold gets the lowest cut.

Farmers are screwed over generally everywhere. Monsanto and the Genetic crops and patent literally hold every farmer hostage (which i'd love to see John do a story on). Farmers are forced into one sided contracts. I think a contract that can be terminated or adjusted by one party without valid reason is ridiculous.
A contract can't be terminated or adjusted by just one party. It's against the law. The problem is that the contracts they agree to are not ultimately in their best interest.
Is it just me or does the 'Aye/Nah' system seem OBVIOUSLY inept? Seriously, determining a vote by volume? You could hand someone a megaphone and their side would always win, leaving out the fact that the head of the vote could just decide to go temporarily deaf for a moment and give it to whoever they (or more likely, their lobbyist 'friends') want.
Under Mason’s rules, which are used in Congress, any single member of the body may immediately request a record vote following a voice vote. It’s generally not done because everyone knows what the outcome of the vote will be before it happens.

Drellistenstomusic Maybe. But they sign contracts. Usually contractors don't have the same rights as employees. If the contract states that you can not let the chicken get sunlight then I am pretty sure there is a clause in there to prevent unionization. I would definitely support them unionizing.

Idk about you guys but I'm calling my representative and saying "if you don't want me standing outside your office with 100 of my friends all chanting chicken-fuck than I suggest you let this amendment pass"
The National Chicken Council responded on their website to this video, claiming it gives a ''one-sided view''. Their main argument includes the ''fact'' that a University of Delaware survey concluded that 73 percent of the poultry farmers were satisfied with contracting business overall. While a system, wherein every three on four farmers benefit, at the costs of the fourth farmer seems not a good system, the survey they mentioned, seems to be published in 1998. 'Yes, National Chickin Council, a survey done 17 years ago perfectly represents the satisfaction of current farmers'. -_-
Nicolas Poolen Not to mention the whole "complainers are punished" bit means that those numbers were probably a misrepresentation of farmer satisfaction anyway.

Ralph Stuivenwold Now there might be some terminological confusion, but when you say dictatorship, I think, Hitler or Stalin or Mao or some Cuban guy with an excessively long beard. These governments are _anything but_ effective. They are so unstable even the army gets fed up with it and eventually revolts into a coup d'êtat. With the possible exception of Stalin's rapid industrialization (which still had side effects much much nastier than any good it has done), no dictatorship I can think of has ever achieved anything. @@eromod The proper definition of socialism is "Government of the people For the People", Note that it is in effect Government Of the People by SOME of the people, of whom as a Civil Servant I was one. I was working for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. I retired a few years early, in response to a financial offer from that employer, because I realised after the disgraceful California electric power debâcle of 2000 .. 2001 that the Congress, and California State government had made it impossible to do properly our job of regulation. California is going to have another such power crash if they close Diablo Canyon. Air quality there took a dive in 2012 when San Onofre Nuclear was shut down.
@Benjamin Rao I'm even a socialist, and I define it as government Of the people, FOR the People. But I hope that Bernie Sanders does NOT get the Democrat nomination, because he is Utterly, Fatally Wrong about nuclear power. I realised the level of folly of that wing of the formerly environmental GMOs, in 2003 when for the first time (!!) I learned from Frontline's interview with Charles Till that the alleged "problems" of nuclear civilian power had been solved in the period between 1964 and 1994, with the breeder reactor IFR project, of which EPR-2, the second model Experimental Breeder reactor, had already shown in 1986 that it could consume the long lived actinoids of wasted nuclear fuel, and even the depleted uranium byproduct of making fuel sufficiently enriched to work in a Light Water Reactor. But more than that, three weeks before the disgraceful, notorious, but wildly exaggerated disaster at Chernobyl, it had been deliberately tested for its inherent immunity to any such meltdown, by cutting off the power supply to the coolant pumps. Exactly as designed and expected, the resulting rise in temperature caused the fission chain reaction, in seconds, to lose its ability to continue. It took "300 seconds" to shut off entirely, and the pool of liquid metal coolant continued to dissipate the heat of the radioactive fission products by simple convection. This deals with the idea that the supply of uranium 235 is inadequate, although even that isn't true. Wind "turbines" have already killed more people than UNSCEAR reckons Chernobyl has or even will do. NO other meltdowns have ANY proven deaths. Not even the three in Japan that were caused by the second phase of the worst tectonic disaster in Japan that is on good record.
@@albertrogers2506 Here's another vote for nuclear power. It was infuriating to hear the general feedback from my coworkers on what they thought HBO's Chernobyl was proof of (the total infeasibility of it rather than a believable showcase of just how avoidable that disaster was). Biggest tip, if you can, keep your own chickens. Then you’ll know what they need to thrive, and it’ll really open your eyes. Watching them chill out under a shrub or tree having a sand bath, or stretched out calmly sunbathing, is actually one of life’s joys. In return, you’ll get the best tasting eggs you’ll ever eat, and you’ll look at the chicken in the supermarket in a whole new light.

Right after we take away farming subsidies from growers of corn, soybean, rice, wheat, cotton, and peanuts, right?

*top is firsthand story about chicken plants, bottom is about the chickens!*
I live in small town Kansas, and we fought like no tomorrow to keep a Tyson plant out of our town.

Lol. I mean, LOL. That's one of the most common insult you american find when someone is critical about your country. Say bad thing about america -> ignorant. Every fucking time. XD
+Nate J. Thing is the companies that don't follow this motto are losing and will inevitably go to bankrupt because having ethic in this system is a huge handicap. Sooner or later someone will be less scrupulous and do the thing you refuse to do for ethic sake. This is how it work and this is why capitalism suck. In capitalism system ethics and moral values are unsellable worthless products.
morals and ethics are useless if it prevents you from enjoying life.
This is the new theme for similar “contracting” companies like Uber. Finding every way to pawn off their business expenses onto their labor.
Where Uber messes up is the driver is motivated to keep driving and the prices do not pay at certain conditions.
They can change this.
Yes - it is a cost and risk effective model especially if you're a very large corporation. It makes companies easily fireable through non-renewal and if there are any injuries/legal issues you have low repercussions.

Ed Bulnes Good intentions may be all good and well, but are worthless if they don't lead to good actions.
A lot of the time people with good intentions can't implement them because they are being blocked by people that act egoistically (which is something most of us do, most of the time).

One can't be. If they are one-sided, then they can't be legally binding in any way.
Is it just me or does the 'Aye/Nah' system seem OBVIOUSLY inept? Seriously, determining a vote by volume?
You could hand someone a megaphone and their side would always win, leaving out the fact that the head of the vote could just decide to go temporarily deaf for a moment and give it to whoever they (or more likely, their lobbyist 'friends') want.
what are you talking about
Under Mason’s rules, which are used in Congress, any single member of the body may immediately request a record vote following a voice vote. It’s generally not done because everyone knows what the outcome of the vote will be before it happens.

Could the chicken farmers unionize?
Most chicken farms are in conservative states.

m0L3ify that sounds like a great idea.
m0L3ify Except the media would label them as communists, and these are the most American of Americans.
Drellistenstomusic Maybe. But they sign contracts. Usually contractors don't have the same rights as employees. If the contract states that you can not let the chicken get sunlight then I am pretty sure there is a clause in there to prevent unionization.
I would definitely support them unionizing.
