I remember that original thing on Sesame Street about lead paint. It actually made me ask my mom about it and she told me that my parents made sure to buy a house that hadn't been painted with lead paint. There's your proof that it created awareness and a conversation when they did it back then. I hope this video does the same again.
I'm really thankful that John Oliver and his team bring up important issues in an easy to understand and humorous way. Behind the humour is great impact through awareness.
I am seriously astonished by him and his show. Within a week, I've learned more than I ever did throughout all of high school. He makes every single issue matter to the viewers. We are all so caught up by building billion dollar walls, that we don't have the time to think enough about realistic issues in society that need to be addressed. Now.
And when he uses his own money to give a good old fashioned middle finger to companies and people he despises, like with Jeff the diseased lung, helps me to have faith in Humanity again.
Rose Blue but does it make a difference? That's the question. I appreciate that he brings these issues to the forefront but is it enough to encourage change?
Dont want to come off negative but i actually doubt that the awareness raises that much. Or let me go on it differently. His audience already contains majorly people who are listening to these ideas, problems and viewpoints and therefore are open to them. Meaning those who watch him, probably dont even need him to bring up the attention of problems. A show like this only has a good impact if it is heard by people who dont belong to his audience already and made up their mind of something aswell. To convince those to turn in and listen, is a tough task he cant achieve with just airing a show, since those who already like him and the viewpoints he represents are already convinced. This problem is called accessibility/reachability and low threshold, and also subject of for example social programs. Its the question about, how do i reach all the people i need to reach out to and not just attract those who were already open to it from the get got? An example for that would be a program in schools against suicide or for education about suicidal topics. Initiating such a program it has to be designed in a way that it does attract those who are affected by the topic but are not attracted to the program by themselves. In short and a bit boldly worded, you can expect the nerds visit your programm anyway even when not affected, but how do i get those cool guys to be interested in what i have to say and visit it? We could argue whether for his core audience he strengthens these viewpoints and maybe even encourages action where there wasnt before (like in this case watching out for said paint), but theres a huge demographic who should be listening to him and who would even be open to these viewpoints but doesnt tune in. Many overestimate the influence such shows have on a wide scale. You and me might support the viewpoints and opinions depicted in his show regulary, doesnt mean someone whose philosophy is made up on the "opposite side" (homophobes, racist thinking people, conservatives etc.), will listen and even if they do, whether this does something. That chance is actually quite low since these people have their own channel repeating what they already believe in (like we do). What you seek for, needs people to be critical and look at a topic from different perspectives. At this point such people will tune in different channels (channels doesnt mean TV channels here, although included) and then work on their world view. As an example: When my dad is convinced that the world is segmented into people from different races which includes that races exist in the first place, he is open to channels that repeat and strengthen this view. When hes also very conservative, hes more open to channels that enrich his world view. Over time, this world view gets stronger and he builds his life, opinions and actions around it, for example who he votes for. He would never tune in John Oliver, as thats not even in the range of his attention. He will stick to stuff that belongs to his side, meaning for example shows that share the same worldview and depict it each time, newscasts that are doing the same and so on. The stronger this worldview gets, the harder it is to get these people even into the position that they are listening to something like that. They just hear stuff like "equality" and instantly switch off to another channel. The awareness might be raised by the audience such a show already has, but the impact on the bigger scope is not there because the show isnt able to go beyond the core audience, attracting more people and convincing them. And you can watch out for replies to ideologies in youtube and other media channels to see that this is showing. Under channels that are expressing their frustration over the recent net neutrality problem you will see a load of people agreeing to the video but pretty much no negative voice that criticises the video, points out counter arguments and alternative viewpoints. Because the video just serves as a repeater for the core audience. The same is true on the opposite side. I would love to agree to your comment and im sorry it is such a long one aswell. And basically you are right in nuances and depending on which topic we talk about. But looking at the truth of it all is, the impact is minimal, as is the effect on raising awareness through the channel.

Great case study John Oliver and team! It would be nice if you could release an update on this topic discussing the implications of leaded aviation fuel- the last remaining exemption to the leaded fuel ban in the United States and Canada. Based on my experience as an aerospace engineer, most aerospace engineers and certainly the majority of people at large are not even aware that lead is still added in very large quantities to aviation grade gasoline for piston engine aircraft. People living near airports are largely unaware that their neurological fitness is being eroded daily. You could rapidly spread awareness of this with even a short 4 minute segment in one of your shows. Thank you for some of the best investigative journalism and comedy in our time!
Except piston engine aircraft make up only an absolutely freaking TINY fraction of all the aviation fuel used on Earth... Here in reality, aircraft use almost entirely unleaded jet fuel. But way to make a mountain out of a molehill while misleading a ton of people! John Oliver has WAY bigger issues to deal with than something that irrelevant. Piston engine aircraft are naturally disappearing, and so is their leaded fuel.
It would also be cool if they talked about how lead bullets used in hunting has led to lead poisoning in carrion birds, with nearly 50% of bald eagles in the US showing signs of lead poisoning
This lead problem in America in 2016 is absolutely ridiculous. They tried to save $5 million over less than two years by switching to Flint River. Yet lawsuits will make them lose a lot more than that. Did they not test the water and check the pipes thoroughly?
They banned tomatoes in Britain hundreds of years ago because it was thought that they could cause severe stomach ailments and death. It was in fact the tomato juice that reacted with the lead in the plates that they used.
I thought one factor was that they also ate the green parts of the tomatoes which have toxic ingredients. But what you say about the plates could be right, too. I think the tomato juice is pretty sour and easily able to react with metals.
@@TheSarahskaninchen they ate the green, toxic fruit of the potato plant, but that actually looks a lot like green tomatoes because they are close relatives (solanum genus)

@@hassanbeydoun2460 false. do not spread misinformation without checking it; flint's lead levels have been fallen back in line with government-approved limits, and has fallen below many other cities. however, the issues at flint are still emblematic of wider systemic problems, and lead wasn't the only problem in flint; another problem was the legionnaire's outbreak the switch caused, the investigation into which was shut down even though people died. additionally, even though the water is safe now, the problem has undermined the people of flint's faith in their government, potentially permanently. and as we can see with what happened in iran with coronavirus, the public being unable to trust the government can have catastrophic effects.
A few years ago the Providence Water Supply Board went bonkers replacing main lines and feeders - but left the lead pipes directly connecting to homes in place. You could pay to have that removed and replaced. Or you can just attach a water filter that strips out lead to the kitchen faucet. Much cheaper that way. I'm surprised more emphasis wasn't given to the proposed link between lead and violent crime. The increased use and subsequent phasing out of leaded gasoline is probably the primary contributor to, respectively, the increase in violent crime incidence from the 1960s to the early 1990s, and the decrease following that period.
That's the study conducted by Rick Nevin from the ICF. It has some pretty solid points but experts say it's not the one and only factor, but it's a factor nonetheless. I wouldn't be surprised in the next 10 - 20 year, crime rates will increase at Flint.
tengku adam Nevin’s the biggest advocate for that theory but Stephen Billings and Kevin Schnepel at UNC Charlotte did a paper not too long ago that showed a .184 standard deviation decrease in antisocial behavior when intervention efforts were taken to reduce childhood blood lead levels. So there is a statistically significant impact on antisocial behavior and likelihood of criminality from lead exposure.

I was in the U.S. Navy from 1978 to 1984. During that time the primer paint used for steel portions of the ship (from the main deck on down) was Lead Oxide (Pb3O4) a.k.a. "red lead". Prior to re-painting, the existing primer was either chipped away via deck grinders/chipping hammers, or ground into a fine dust via wire wheel. No one explained that we probably wanted to be wearing filter masks while doing this. For portions above the main deck, the superstructure was aluminum. Zinc Chromate (ZnCrO4) was the primer used. Recent studies have shown zinc chromate primers to be highly toxic, with a direct correlation between regularly working with zinc chromate and increased occurrence of lung cancer. Again, we weren't told we probably wanted to be wearing filter masks while grinding away existing zinc chromate primer.
+MrSafetymeeting Not a long term solution. At best you've paid to kick the can down the road a bit and you still have a house with lead paint that no one is going to want to buy for fear that they're in the same spot.
Right, leaving the paint in place is, for most people, the safest remotely economical solution. Lead paint isn't _that_ dangerous if you paint over it. Obviously it doesn't solve the underlying problem in the long term, but doing so typically isn't realistic. Removing lead paint generates a lot of dust and is dangerous, so doing it safely is very costly. If the government won't subsidize its removal, it simply won't happen.

The dod budget helps to deal with the tons of nuke waste lying around the country bout 10 percent. Honestly the only way things get better is if the regulatiory committed like the epa,fda etc quit getting crippled and are given the power to operate effectively.
The main problem isn't really the military budget. Its mandated spending. 60% of the federal budget is mandated spending. www.thebalance.com/u-s-federal-budget-breakdown-3305789 What that means is, that most of the federal budget is on auto-pilot. So Congress is basically asleep at the wheel when it comes to budgeting.
@@Sewblon looking at that link the mandatory spending is fine...thats basically important stuff that needs to be funded... heck there are things in the discretionary budget that really belong in the mandatory bucket like education... my guess as to the lack in the budget would be 1: corporate tax evasion and lack of sufficient taxations of the actual wealth in the nation and 2: unneccesary military spending - tho that probably would not be an issue if issue one was resolved for example they spend 700 million on 5 new presidential helicopters... its not a huge deal in the scope of the entire budget... but that amount could easily fund lead removal for quite a while... i would assume that this is a bit of a more pressing issue than getting the prez 5 new rides and yeah they have relatively little budget they can allocate freely... but thats because they have been slashing the government income for decades to let the rich get richer and occasionally to harm the political opposition when it was clear to them that they would not be likely to be in power for the next term

But there is inadequate taxation. America's tax revenue as a percentage of GDP is lower than most rich countries. The obvious place to start is to get rid of tax expenditures. And they make up more money than any government program. www.cbpp.org/research/federal-tax/policy-basics-federal-tax-expenditures 3. But $700 million for 5 helicopters comes out to $140 million per-chopper. You can buy a 2017 chopper for $3.35 million. The President could have 5 choppers and still have $683.25 million left over. You. You can just fuck off.
@Magenta Spikes : build the powerwall :D
As an example:
When my dad is convinced that the world is segmented into people from different races which includes that races exist in the first place, he is open to channels that repeat and strengthen this view.
I would never try to poison you.

Thank you! I had no idea.
What do European countries use instead?
Except piston engine aircraft make up only an absolutely freaking TINY fraction of all the aviation fuel used on Earth... Here in reality, aircraft use almost entirely unleaded jet fuel. But way to make a mountain out of a molehill while misleading a ton of people! John Oliver has WAY bigger issues to deal with than something that irrelevant. Piston engine aircraft are naturally disappearing, and so is their leaded fuel.
Thanks for this comment, glad awareness is out there!
It would also be cool if they talked about how lead bullets used in hunting has led to lead poisoning in carrion birds, with nearly 50% of bald eagles in the US showing signs of lead poisoning

@@4philipp Caring about the water is one thing. Caring about the people who drink it? Hmmm...

And regards lead paint - I worked at the RI AG's office when the state sued lead paint producers. They got them to pay for remediation of lead. That was pretty damned good.

Of course I could've just been stupid. Idk.
Let's not forget Troy McLure's wise word's: "Lead paint! Delicious,but deadly !"

Lead based paint is beyond common in cheap oil paint, sold mainly to younger/student artists. As proper oil paint is 5 times the price. They dont record it on their packaging. Hence how it gets into the west. Honestly, an old art teacher showed me a trick. Rub the tinniest bit of the paint between your forearm and your palm on the vein side. Wait 5-10 minutes and if your viens are black/purple its got lead in it. It's disgusting what has been so easily allowed to flow into the markets of countries which have "banned" lead based paint. Anyone that disliked this video obviously doesn't care about their fellow man or children. Seriously this world is a complete mess and I am glad John Oliver is trying to bring more attention to things we need to change/fix.
+Sean “DeViLzzz” DeMarco Hello.....do you have a brain?
As Elmo once said: “Just because something’s hard doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it.”
Good grief, we started figuring out how bad lead was when the Romans ruled the world.
Right? You'd think this would be universally-accepted knowledge by now, but those who do not study are doomed to repeat it. Our powers that be clearly haven't done their reading.
Just because something is hard doesn't mean you shouldn't try...
Can't believe Elmo still has to say that to adults now
Oscar's decision to reject work in the violently capitalistic environment of the Sesame Street is great. He fights for anarchy. I respect Oscar.
Yes.
+Julian I'm actually surprised to see him. I thought the was retired a couple years ago due to people being offended, feeling he stereotyped homeless people.
+Soletestament lol people are stupid, he obviously has a home •-• it's a trashcan but it's still a home ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
yeah, they got rid of a bunch of stuff just to be all PC... its kinda dumb... no oscar, the cookie minster doesn't eat cookies... makes no sense to me. i dont know anyone who was actually offended. sounds like it was all just one whiny ass hole who ruined it for everyone
+E. Corellius It is a bit of a leap, but I believe Oscar is supposed to espouse Diogenes in his barrel.
He is very much missed, and as an intensely cynical person, about the only reason I could make myself watch sesame street. Strangely, years later, I saw George Carlin at a small theatre, and I don't think at age 20 I was quite ready for a comedy act that cynical. But now at age 30 I wish I could see him again.
I love the shade John Oliver throws at the end of every show. This is literally what is getting me through this stupid virus right now.
"Oh, hi Mr. Oliverrrr!!!"
Oh Elmo, you kill me.
John Oliver, if only you could run for President... you rock dude, as does your entire production crew...best darn shiznit on RUclips!!!
daddy9minnich777 I love Last Week Tonight and think John Oliver is great. But the USA has to stop voting for celebrities. Didn't you learn anything from Trump? And just because someone is nice or funny or intelligent, doesn't mean he's suited for politics.
@@franzkissel1369 Don't forget Reagan, he was a fairly well-known actor before his political life. That didn't go so well, either.
That said, Oliver couldn't do a worse job than the current fruitloop, but he'd probably be better suited as some kind of advisor (or whoever heads his fact-checking team would do nicely).
Moxie Miscellany Reagan is one of the top three most influential, productive presidents of all time. Fuck you.
John Oliver doesn't know what to do with his hands, but he seems to have taken singing lessons. Bravo!
For real though, Code Red is the worst Mountain Dew.
true
:c
+mariokarter13 Glad to see the important messages got across XD
+mariokarter13 I disagree, Mountain Dew Throwback taste MUCH worse.
I like code red..... :c
The tree of truth planted by Jon Stewart is alive and well.
6:00 He's not wrong. That's literally what 'Every Breath You Take' is about, according to the writer.
Also it's obvious
watching this in the mist of Covid in my house glaring at the painted walls... damn quarantine can kill me too....
These are the issues you should be talking about, Mr. President.
I have lead paint in my house. The only legal way I can have it removed is to have it done professionally, and that costs more than my house is worth.
+MrHeems Move?
Furen I can only afford to do that, if someone buys my house. Want to buy a lead tainted house?
Sure. I just gotta get a job... And move from Canada ;)
Did anyone else die of laughter when Elmo started counting to 100 million?
@LastWeekTonight I am an early survivor of lead poisoning. I almost died and somehow survived with extremely low chances. If you want to observe a severe case search Spokane Girl's lead poisoning raises suspicions about home". Thank you for shedding light on this issue that will affect me for the rest of my life.
Corporations all have our best interests in heart... Dont trust the government.. wait corporations now run the government?
John Oliver: Making us feel strong emotions about problems we didn't even realize were problems.
Maybe cut back the military budget and pay for things like lead removal
The dod budget helps to deal with the tons of nuke waste lying around the country bout 10 percent. Honestly the only way things get better is if the regulatiory committed like the epa,fda etc quit getting crippled and are given the power to operate effectively.
The main problem isn't really the military budget. Its mandated spending. 60% of the federal budget is mandated spending. www.thebalance.com/u-s-federal-budget-breakdown-3305789 What that means is, that most of the federal budget is on auto-pilot. So Congress is basically asleep at the wheel when it comes to budgeting.
@@Sewblon looking at that link the mandatory spending is fine...thats basically important stuff that needs to be funded... heck there are things in the discretionary budget that really belong in the mandatory bucket like education...
my guess as to the lack in the budget would be 1: corporate tax evasion and lack of sufficient taxations of the actual wealth in the nation and 2: unneccesary military spending - tho that probably would not be an issue if issue one was resolved
for example they spend 700 million on 5 new presidential helicopters... its not a huge deal in the scope of the entire budget... but that amount could easily fund lead removal for quite a while... i would assume that this is a bit of a more pressing issue than getting the prez 5 new rides
and yeah they have relatively little budget they can allocate freely... but thats because they have been slashing the government income for decades to let the rich get richer and occasionally to harm the political opposition when it was clear to them that they would not be likely to be in power for the next term
@@SharienGaming 1. I am against mandatory spending in principle. Its all public money that the Congress has the constitutional power to dispose of as they see fit. Declaring that any of it, let alone most of it, is non-negotiable, is dishonest and undemocratic. 2. Tax evasion is not a serious problem. The U.S. has better Tax compliance than most rich countries.www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/04/americans-love-paying-taxes/390582/ Its not Sweden levels. But its still impressive. But there is inadequate taxation. America's tax revenue as a percentage of GDP is lower than most rich countries. The obvious place to start is to get rid of tax expenditures. The benefits of those mostly go to the rich, i.e. people who don't really need them to pay their bills. And they make up more money than any government program. www.cbpp.org/research/federal-tax/policy-basics-federal-tax-expenditures 3. The U.S. does spend more on its military as a percentage of GDP than most countries. But that is in part because they are footing the bill for defending many of their allies, like Germany and Japan (the places they occupied at the end of the 2nd world war and never left). But $700 million for 5 helicopters comes out to $140 million per-chopper. You can buy a 2017 chopper for $3.35 million. The President could have 5 choppers and still have $683.25 million left over. I don't know that that is enough to get rid of all the lead. But its a start.
@@Sewblon while i disagree on mandatory spending, since there just are things in a nations budget that should be non-negotiable (maintaining infrastructure, education, healthcare, social security to name a few), i can agree with pretty much everything else you summarized there
and honestly - that one disagreement is pretty much a difference of principle between us
and yeah that price for choppers (found in the details of your original link) looked excessive to me as well
"That's a lot of economic insight from someone who lives in a trashcan"
I was going to go to bed buttt..

For whatever weird reason, this evoked the happy memory of my Grammy and me repainting an entire dollhouse, doll furniture, and dolls because she recognized the lead paint. This wasn't supposed to make me feel nostalgic. Wtf.
