Holy shamolians, 34+ minutes! I'm betting this will be the longest "Top 10 Before You Die" video... some people may even DIE before they finish watching! I agree 100% on the importance of tasting a New Make / White Dog as part of the whiskey education and experience... BUT it isn't whisky. Whisky is made in the barrel, not in the distillery. Funny, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof seems to be showing up on almost everyone's list! I'm glad to see a Balcones on your list, I just picked up a couple more bottles in Texas that I can't find in California. You're such a peat head I was expecting more Islay whiskies. There are a bunch of bottles on this list I need to try... so many whiskies... so little time.
You stated that you love the maltiness and that's why you lean toward single malt scotch, but the malt flavor that shines through the scotches ive tried is the reason i dont like it. Are there scotches that dont have that malty flavor, or at least toned way down?
Wonderful video. While Macallan 12 sherry made me a fan of scotch (like Scott said in his 10 whiskeys to try before you die video), Lagavulin 16 was what blew my mind by showing me the evocative, memory-triggering and almost mystical dimensions of whisky. That was what made me a lover of peat! (My first experience was being horrified by Laphroaig 10, which I now also enjoy). This list is great because you recommend some wild and out of the box bottles that I’ll have to go and find now.
Bart Loved this!!!! It is definitely the BEST piece I have seen you do!! I too enjoy whiskey as a culinary experience! I was in one of my local liquor stores last weekend and the clerk said "OH MOST PEOPLE HAVE ONE BROWN SPIRIT THAT THEY BUY TIME AND AGAIN" I said ""NOT ME I LIKE TO EXPLORE. WHISKEY IS A CULINARY EXPERIENCE FOR ME. I LIKE TO SEE WHAT DIFFERENT NOTES I GET FROM DIFFERENT WHISKIES!" Having said that, I was looking for an Elijah Craig Barrel Proof that I have not had, but they only had Batch B518 so I got it again and to my surprise there was no initial alcohol burn Neat, which may be due to the three glasses of water I drank beforehand. It is fantastic!! I also agree that McCarthy's is a whiskey to try before you die. They did a wonderful job in crafting that whiskey. Thanks you gave me some whiskies to try and I look forward to them!! SLÁINTE Mike
The very first whiskey I ever tried was Lagavulin 16 and instantly fell in love with it. I am still a Bourbon head but there are alot of great scotches, both peated and non peated. Give em a try, you might like it.
Bart you are a man of truly fine tastes. Ardbeg 10 the flagship from their core range is undoubtedly my number 1 favorite whisky as well. It's my daily dram as well as one that I can go back too when other whiskies get too dull or I'm looking for some added depth or complexity. There are for sure some whiskies that I might score a bit higher but Arbeg 10 is one that I will always stand behind and recommend to folks on their path through the world of whisky. Cheers brother!
Bart, i agree with the rest of the commenters. You absolutely nailed the essence of Rob's challenge. Best of these reviews.👍👍👍👍👍Can't express my thanks enough. Will show this video to everyone i meet that is getting into whiskey. This video explains why we partake in the juice of the gods.🥂🥂Cheers.
That was one of the most enjoyable and intriguing whisky related videos i have had the pleasure to watch : -) It elevates the whole whisky experience to a level beyond a liquid in a glass! 'Whisky Memories' i want more :-) Thank you JJ x
Your experience with Lagavulin 16 is almost identical to my experience with Talisker 10... I hated it! Now it's like an old friend. This is a great list, Bart. I have tried seven or eight of the whiskies on your list, and by coincidence I just tried the Westland for the first time last night.
I see that this is an old video, but I just had to leave a comment. Loved this so much, love your selection and can really relate to your journey. Thanks from Denmark :-)
This was a very informative and interesting review with just the right amount of facts and personal opinion on each bottle. Thanks Bart, you aced it here.
Awesome suggestions Bart. I’m glad no one has said pappy. Yet.... so much more than that, that is readily available. I tried Johnnie Walker Double Black loves it and went straight to Ardbeg 10 and never regretted my decisión lol Cheers
When I tried Ardbeg Corryvreckan it took me back to a hike where there was a creek with a huge number of fallen burned trees in it that had succumbed to their death by a forest fire. The creek water had the char/ashy flavor from the burned trees, what tasted to me identical to that note in Corryvreckan. I'm now in love with Ardbeg, and from what you say here about the Lag 16 with it's ash and other dry notes, I'm going to love that too! Just hoping now that the dry notes in this overwhelm the sweet ones, but that'll be determined soon. Great vid and cheers!🥃
When I ran across Lagavulin 16 I found it a bit weird, but neither liked it very much nor hated it. It was not overwhelming enough to draw me into peated whiskies. The Laphroaig Quarter Casks did this job: the intensity was spot on and was the bridge to discover other peated ones. Still love it today while I also prefer the Lagavulin Distiller's Edition over the regular bottlings.
I'm already 1/5 of the way through your list. I'm currently trying my first couple glasses of Corsair Oatrage. First impression: it's okay. Not bad, but not phenomenal. I'll take your recommendation and come back to it after a couple weeks and give it time to oxidize a tiny bit. The other that I've had on the list is Ardbeg TEN. It was my first peated whiskey and it immediately converted me to the Cult of Ardbeg(TM) and made me a full-fledged peat head! Since then I've finished an entire bottle of the TEN, the Uigeadail, I have half a bottle of Corryvreckan left, half a bottle of Laphroaig 10 and recently I drove a couple hours to get my hands on a Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength and a Port Charlotte 10 Heavily Peated. Lagavulin 16 has been on my list for a while, but I've been avoiding it due to its price. Once I've had time to taste test the rest of my recent acquisitions I'll do Nick Offerman proud and get me a bottle.
Super solid list, Bart! I didn't expect so few scotches in your top 10, but you've given me several american whiskies I haven't had yet that I need to try! I was kinda like you on bourbon for a while - I didn't hate it, but it didn't do it for me near as much as scotch. For me the bourbon that pulled me in was McKenna 10 BIB. It blew me away, and really sent me down a bourbon trail and now I'm a full blown bourbon fiend. ECBP is a favorite now as well. Cheers, buddy.

Good to have you on board Igor. I wouldn’t call it complex but try the Jameson Black Barrel. It’s one of my favorite Irish whiskies and you can move on to the Red Breast for more complexity.
Something you might also like slightly off topic because you were talking about memories that pop up but, not with beer. You should give Stouts a try. I lean more towards the higher abv Stouts and they mostly seem to have an amazing aroma and taste. I just got heavily into whiskey/whisky about a year ago and now have quite a collection of Japanese whisky, Irish whiskey, Scotch and Bourbon. Great video.
@@ScotchTestDummies I search all different ways and nada! I did find Balconies French Oak and was thinking of getting a bottle. How does that one compare to Mirador??
Bart, you knocked this one outta da park! Some great philosophical points. A very good range to try before it is too late. Coincidentally went to a free bourbon tasting last night and before the 4 bourbons started I ordered 2 scotch I've never had. I'm not a peat lover but had my first Laga 16. It surprised me. I think I'm gonna like it. Got some sweetness and maybe grilled fruits after the peat smoke and meat. Will definitely order another dram before buying a bottle. I also had my first Oban Little Bay and enjoyed very much so ordering a bottle for under $40. Cheers!
Nice list Bart, and only one usual suspect with your numero uno. I have bought maybe 3 bottles of Lagavulin 16, but decided to skip that one, I can’t enjoy it like Laphroaig or Ardbeg.. not that I didn’t try... 🤪
The journey in the Scotch world is a magnificent journey. It took me at least a year to get up the gumption to try an Islay Scotch. Once the smoke hit me I was hooked. I long for the evenings where I can sit on the back deck and drink an Ardbeg 10 or my recent find Uigedail (sp?). There is something about just enjoying a cool night with a peaty, smoky Islay that just hits home. My favorite thing to do now is sit in front of a fire pit with a cigar and an Ardbeg and just let the smoke envelop me. Love every bit of it. Great list and glad to see Ardbeg 10 as a number one!
Bart, that was one of the most surprising of your videos ever. Very subdued, and enlightening. I hope to meet you at the Bastard's Ball next month. And I agree with all of the list that I have tasted. I would recommend Ardbeg Uigeadail over the 10. And the Laphroiag folks are going to be on your case.
I have a little different take: Ardbeg 10 got me into whisky tasting. It was the first whisky to transport me somewhere, and I still consider it my "spirit whisky". I loved it from the very first day, and it started me on my whisky journey. So for some of us, trying it first might just be the magic that gets you into the hobby...
Same here! As a spicy food eater, Ardbeg 10 had the intensity I needed to be my gateway drug whisky. It took more time for me to appreciate the subtleness of highlands and speysides.
Nicely done Bart, I enjoyed the video of your Top 10 List but unfortunately most of them do not hardly enter my state. I guess I'll have to make an effort to find some when in Arizona while visiting my mom. Cheers!
Wow Bart, job well done. With all honesty, I must say that when I first watched your video and saw that you had white dog as a must try before you die, I thought you were crazy, so I turned off the tv and went to sleep. But because I love the dummies, I gave your video another try in the morning, and after watching it in its entirety, the white dog made sense. Awesome video/must try list. Aloha🤙
Scotch Test Dummies I was able to try Uigeadail recently and I think I like it better than Ten! I’ll know for sure one day when I can try them back to back
Have Balcones, Stranahans and McCarthys, still trying to find a Westland (I prefer to buy out in the wild instead of online). I'm still a Scotch guy, but am definitely enjoying the emergence of American Single Malt Whiskies. 😀
For another American single malt, keep an eye out for Virginia Distillery Company's first single malt release Prelude: Courage & Conviction. It's a one time release and is hitting stores across the US in October! Its a 3.5 yo single malt, which they're replacing with their 4 year old version in Spring. I would've never guessed its so young, but the crazy temperature swings of Virginia lets it age rapidly.
Highly enjoyed your explanation of experience and how whiskey brings memories. I guess we have to be of an age to reflect. Thanks for the recommendations to check out. 2 thumbs up my friend
Great video, Bart! So nice to see you speak for 35 minutes without any interruptions from that clown Scott ;-D . Interesting to see so many American whiskes on the list and hear your take on those. It seems it will gonna be very exciting to follow American single malts in the future! That Cragganmore was a surprise, but I will try to get a taste before I die :) Btw I just noticed that the picture quality is very very good, crispy clear focus and a slightly blurry background. Great!
Hey they do have that version of Crag here in Ontario. Same price as the 12 year (only $100! yes it's criminal). Another RUclipsr recommended Cragganmore 12 as a gateway single malt. And now Mr. Bart mentions this distillery. You've got a lot of knowledge, you're not just hats and T-shirts buddy. 👍
Love the video! Lots of great suggestions for new experiences. I'm kind of surprised Laphroaig 10 CS didn't make number one. But I guess Ardbeg 10 is more readily available.
I agree I would love to American single malt become its own specific category. I often enjoy single malts more than a lot of bourbons. I have a couple I show to non whiskey drinking friends before bourbon even.
not sure Sehraj, you just have to search online stores and find em. thats what i do with kansas, add items to cart and then see how much shipping will cost. If they don't ship to your state that is where you'll find out.
You the man bart! Sierra norte yellow corn is pretty unique aged in Mexico for ten months has moonshine quality but also very tasty. All hail B517 wow C918 is great as well. Mcarthys is getting better and better. Burnside goose hollow reserve is special as well Oregon oak cask. Wanderback has gotten good reveiws as well they are on their third batch now located in hood river as well westland assisted with their first batch. Corsair is redesigning labels currently I believe moving away from the reservoir dogs motif. Talisker 10, Coryvrekken, laphroaig 10, campfire, nectar d'or, redbreast 12, hibiki harmony, bunnahabhain 12, anything compass box are all great experiences for me as well.
Great list! My current list with criteria Under $125 / €115 / £100 Nothing Discontinued No Special Editions Seasonal or Distiller’s Releases OK Ardbeg Corryvrecken Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Talisker Distiller’s Edition Balcones Mirador Pikesville Rye Green Spot Single Pot Still Yamazaki 12 Year Calumet Farm Single Rack Black 12 Year Old Pulteney 12 Year Teeling Single Malt
The newer versions of Lag 16 yo are definitely not as good. Definitely fresher, younger and more restrained with the peat. I like the Lag 8 yo much better. Ardbeg 10 yo,...all day long. One of my favs ever.
My journey is so eerily similar. The first Peaty Scotch I ever tried was Lagavulin 16. (Go Big, or Go Home, right?) It kicked my arse. Both in scent and taste it just screamed IODINE to me. Bleh! I almost gave up Peaty Scotch for good. But someone had some Laphroaig 10 and to my surprise, I could handle it, savor it on the palate, come to grips with the Smokey Peat. I was thrilled, but puzzled as to why I could acclimate to Laphroaig 10 which is Smokey Peat, but not Lagavulin 16. So I then learned on the Scotch chart that Scotch moves not just from Sweet to Smokey but also from "Light" to "Rich". Lagavulin 16 was extremely on the Rich end, whereas Laphroaig 10 was much more on the light side. For lack of a better explanation, the richness of the Lagavulin 16 assualts you with its Smokey Peat, whereas the Laphroaig 10, being lighter, sort of allowed you to approach and savor its Smoky Peat at your own pace. So following the chart, I then chose the most Light of the Smokey Peaty ones listed on the chart: Ardbeg 10. And just like your list, it is my #1 favorite of the Smokey Peaty Scotch I have tried! While I've acclimated a bit more to the Lagavulin 16, it still hurts a bit in a way that Ardbeg 10 does not. I do wonder if it has to do with that "light" as opposed to "rich" characteristic which it has in comparison to Lagavulin 16??? I mean, they're both very Smokey Peaty, but Ardbeg 10 simply does not scream IODINE to me in the same way Lagavulin 16 does even still. Ardbeg 10 is mystical: like transporting you to a tribe of ancient pagan Picts dancing around a fire on a oceanside beach at night.
Awesome video! As Tina Fey's daughter once said... "I want to go to there!" (trying these sounds great... I've had the Pikesvile Rye, the Lagavulin 16, and the Ardbeg 10, seven more to go! Cheers.

I think we had some of this or at least a sample. I'll have to check with Scott.
I'm gonna try these next weekend! More drinkin' than nosin'...
all good
Highly enjoyed your explanation of experience and how whiskey brings memories. I guess we have to be of an age to reflect. Thanks for the recommendations to check out. 2 thumbs up my friend
Great list Bart! Very thoughtful. Thanks
Thanks Vesbolk
I’ve had some great new make over the last few years. Not something to drink regularly but worth the experience.
I agree
Awesome stuff Bart. Cheers.
Hi Rob, I'm so glad you kicked this series off.. love to hear some of your 'Whisky Memories' too :-) JJ x
Thanks Rob. Great idea!!!
Excellent video Bart! Almost miss the board games
Oh...those are still coming out too. Try to get Judd back on set to do a two man HAMTAG!!!!
Great!
Thanks Ebbhead. We used funds to buy a really nice camera (Scott is the man).
good list, Bart. Cheers!
Thanks Mike
Hey they do have that version of Crag here in Ontario. Same price as the 12 year (only $100! yes it's criminal). Another RUclipsr recommended Cragganmore 12 as a gateway single malt. And now Mr. Bart mentions this distillery. You've got a lot of knowledge, you're not just hats and T-shirts buddy. 👍
Thanks Ronald.
A really well put together list😃
Thanks Fred
Love the video! Lots of great suggestions for new experiences.
I'm kind of surprised Laphroaig 10 CS didn't make number one. But I guess Ardbeg 10 is more readily available.
And I still like Laphroaig but I've become a big Ardbeg fan.
I have tried White Dog and I can absolutely agree it is 'educational' to say the least lol...
You had me at "a thunderstorm in your mouth" hahaha
BOOM!
An ample supply of great whiskey advice ....
Thank you Quincy
Nice long video... I almost died before I got to try any of them. 😂
Lol
Well done - and great scotch classics in the top 3 :)
Boom
Thank you Bart, for keeping it real
Thanks Krishna
Great list. Cheers Bart 🥃
Thanks Mike
I agree I would love to American single malt become its own specific category. I often enjoy single malts more than a lot of bourbons. I have a couple I show to non whiskey drinking friends before bourbon even.
Hi
Can u please name the online whiskyshops outside maryland that deliver in maryland dc???
not sure Sehraj, you just have to search online stores and find em. thats what i do with kansas, add items to cart and then see how much shipping will cost.
Thanks William
*What is back there directly behind him? With the hairy red thing on the left? Those bottles alone are nice! I Wanna try a smoked whiskey 🥃*
20:38 I thought he was going to say "hello, how are you, quite well, thank you very much"
That would have been great
Great video, interesting finds. Never really given much thought to riding the white lightening.
Give it a shot. Really helps establish a baseline for young whiskey flavor profiles.
Well done! Thank you for sharing. Cheers!
Thanks Michael

Do you know the reason why 12 Year Lagavulin is more expensive and harder to find?
limited run they do each year at cask strength. Also the 12 is not sherried like the 16.
@@ScotchTestDummies Makes sense, I'm enjoying the 8 right now which brought me to your video. Thanks for the reply.
I didn't like whisky until I tried the Lagavulin 16. It was love at first sip!
After a while I started to appreciate the unpeated one also.
'I'll say it all wrong . . . it's Irish!' Ha ha ha :)
Boom!
Great list.
Thanks J Mac
very entertaining!
Lagavulin. love at first taste....
My "Epiphany" whisky was the Lagavulin 16.
Nice! Mine was Ardbeg 10!
Nice and nice
The newer versions of Lag 16 yo are definitely not as good. Definitely fresher, younger and more restrained with the peat. I like the Lag 8 yo much better. Ardbeg 10 yo,...all day long. One of my favs ever.
Yeah it seems thinner and much less rich than it used to be. Still great, but not what I remember it being.
Interesting. I’ll have to find a sample of an older one.
Cool shirt dude!
Thanks...that's one of my favorites
Excellent review
Thanks Jay
Great video Bart! By the way, I like the shirt
Thanks Loren. I love that shirt. I’ve got a snoopy and Batman version as well.
@@ScotchTestDummies I was having a couple of drams later in my STD Glencairn and I couldn't find my Cask 5 coin! Crap! 😝
BOOM
Great video and explanation different than I have heard before but where is you buddy??...........Slainte!

Bingo
this vid makes me finally subsrcibed to your channel !
I’ve been waiting on this one. Having a glass of Uigeadail now
Great choice David
Coryvrekken pretty magical as well
William Bedard I’m planning on getting it next or Laphroaig 10 CS if it comes out by then (October)
Smell is the most primal of senses.
Bingo
This is Bart. I’m two years late on the response but a great post. Thank you Peat Brother!
Awesome video! As Tina Fey's daughter once said... "I want to go to there!" (trying these sounds great... I've had the Pikesvile Rye, the Lagavulin 16, and the Ardbeg 10, seven more to go!
Cheers.
Thanks Raster
If thats what peat tastes like then youd love Sauza silver tequila. Tastes like licking an ashtray.
We like the way you talk Rebecca
sadly most are impossible to get outside the US
Balcones and Westland will soon be international and we found the ECBP in Glasgow so it is around. McCarthy’s will be hard to get however.
I'm surprised you didn't have the committee release number one.
It’s not a list of my favorites but a list that I think will help others have a wonderful whisky quest.
Timestamps?
You pronounce poteen Pot-sheen like Charlie Sheen. I'm Irish. I'm sure Charlie has tried it too.
Perfect...sorry I missed the mark.
You conspicuously left out the possibility of there being peyote buttons there.
Look at the size of those Chickens
