I am so old I hate to say it. 77
What you see on that screen is accurate in terms of the emotional and political atmosphere and what it did to people. As a Christopher Street organizer from 1970 i appreciate your comments about us. We were brave because there was nothing else to lose, or so i felt at the time.

I'm hardly young either, at 61, but a giant 'thank you' for your work in the 1970's. We all stand on the shoulders of those like you and even before you who did the hard work when it was indeed brave and must have seemed a losing battle much of the time. What scares me is when younger people (definitely not our friend Luke, who seems to have a great sense of history) seem to have little to no knowledge of what it took to make these changes that allow us the degree of acceptance we have today in many of the more progressive societies. It scares me because it can all vanish if we are not vigilant and if we take our hard-fought rights for granted. LGBTQ people are a minority, and we make an easy scapegoat for societies looking for someone to blame for their problems. The fight for equality is not over and never will be. Shows like this are important in teaching LGBTQ history. I hope it gets a wide audience and that it reaches many young people.

First of all I want to say a huge thank you for what you have done for the community. It fancinates and amazes me how much you and the activists have done for us all to have a degree of freedom (at least a lot more than it was in the 1960s-70s).
It's so important that this history is told to the younger members of the community so that that can take this forward and continue to uphold the values we hold dear. Much love and respect to you Barbara and I hope you are keeping well ❤️

Luke, your insight and knowledge of US politics and queer history is incredible. If I picked 50 young Americans of your age and asked them about this stuff, I think many would be oblivious to most of it. One reason queer people were perceived as much of a threat as communists was because any queer person working in the government (like Hawk and Tim) could be blackmailed by foreign enemies (threatened outing, and all the consequences) unless they agreed to get and pass on useful info and secrets (i.e., spy).

Frank Kameny. Barbara Gittings. Please google these herpes. Both had significant losses of jobs and family early in their lives BECAUSE they were gay and then dedicated their lives to organizing and changing the law. Mattachine. My organization HOMOPHILE ACTION LEAGUE, GAY ACTIVIST ALLIANCE etc, etc. Remember their names.

It’s so interesting to watch reactions of young people to this show. It wasn’t that long ago (in that many people who lived thru it are still alive-me included) and yet it was a different world. McCarthy was such a dark era. The emphasis was on communism (the fear & hate were huge in the wake of WWII). The “justification” to target gays was because they had the potential to be blackmailed by the “other side” to subvert democracy. But homophobia certainly played a large part of it.
I sort of laughed when Hawk’s mother said he was supposed to produce an heir and you said “daughter or son.” No, daughters weren’t heirs. They didn’t ensure the family name lived on.
Gads, revisiting this era is hard. I think the best thing about this series is that it’s showing a new generation just how difficult it was.

We see Mary in episode 1 in 1986. She is the congresswoman that Hawk calls to get Tim’s address. And he asks about her partner Phyllis. 👩🏼‍❤️‍👩🏻

We both reacted the same way when Mary said what she said. Ugh this show is so depressing but addicting at the same time, I can't even fathom how it must have been to be queer back then. I do hope in the 80s hawk and Tim at least get to be permanently reunited. I haven't read the book but I do know that there Hawk never met him again before he died, so I'm hopeful the differences will also be reflected in their "reunited at last" happy (at least as happy as it can be) ending

Love your reaction videos! They are great! 👏 One thing though about the scene where Hawk dictates the letter: The words he has Tim write down are about him and Tim. Hawk is basically declaring his love for Tim without declaring it. And Tim realises that Hawk is talking about them which is why he gets so angry at the point when Hawk makes him write "There is no future for us". He gets angry then and says that he doesn't understand Hawk, doesn't understand them. He understood that Hawk was talking about them and asks why Hawk wants him around if there is no future for them. "Just for another hour of sex?" It's so heartbreaking really ☹

"Homophobic" is a term that had no currency in the 1950s. The information that gays are numerous, healthy and determined at birth did not exist. Most gays, except a few of those in large northern U.S.cities (I speak only of Americans here) had attitudes and beliefs that would now be termed homophobic. There was nowhere someone could research and find out otherwise. It was illegal to take part in any same-sex sexual activity. Although the McCarthy era made it more dangerous for those in government positions in terms of people snooping into private lives, any gay, anywhere, was in real danger if he or she came under suspicion. People would lose almost any job if they were believed to be homosexual. Those fired from the government would be marked and would never find work again, except in the most menial positions, or in the low end businesses who would take whomever they could get. Even spouses and family would often cut ties. The average gay was not a coward, he was in a situation where "being his true self" was not even an idea held by anyone he or she knew and not even an Idea he or she might have. Many people with same-sex attraction viewed it as something separate from who they really were. It mas not really an integrated part of one's personality. That belief is quite new. And, were someone to try and live openly, even in San Francisco or Greenwich Village, he or she was putting his or her life at risk every single day. Some few were open, but they were regarded as foolish, rather than brave by most people. One cannot judge people by current standards where many people are supportive, or at least tolerant, and more importantly where information about options is available.

Thank you, Luke! 🤫 It is bizarre to ponder how different things were... not so long ago. And people in those unfortunate situations still found ways to live and love.

I fully agree!!!! The Maurice movie is one of my favourite movies ever. I loved the book & was nervous when I heard that a mob=vie was being made... BUT the movie, starring James Wilby, Hugh Grant and Rupert Graves is just absolutely beautiful. Since it's release in 1987 I have watched it at least once a year!

Maurice was such a big deal because it actually ends happily, which was unheard of at the time (of the book, I mean). I do like the movie especially since I studied in Cambridge myself so it has some nostalgic aspects, but the book is just… well, I just really like it.

Rewatched Episode 2. Hawk Fuller is the gay brother we never knew Don Draper had. When he played back the film of the Rosenberg protests it immediately called to mind the Kodak carousel episode of “Mad Men.”

You know we think you are hot. Your gorgeous. Every man on here wants you. That’s a good problem to have! But the other problem is that, speaking for myself, I worked so hard for a long time to make sure people stop calling us queer. Now the ones we tried to protect from that label are using it themselves. What are your thoughts on that? I’ve heard some younger people say that we should just get over it.

    • @nomadine85
      @nomadine85 9 месяцев назад

I think that it’s valid to feel uncomfortable with a label just as much as it’s valid to feel empowered by it. I even think it’s valid how one feels about the use of historically and sociopolitically charged labels and words depending on context. As long as we are understanding and respectful of each other and our personal history and associations of a term, and allow space for discussion and acclimation, I think we’ll be okay.
