    Hey Julian! Just wanted to say that i love your work, I'm doing grade 8 exam now and I've watched your videos from the start of me doing ABRSM piano exams. I've been playing the piano for 12 years now, but I'm still bad at sight reading (in my opinion). Today I decided to see if I could sight read these pieces and I sure could. I'm now trying to sight read grade 4 pieces, but it's a challenge. Any tips for sight reading apart from the usual, like playing different pieces, and sight reading often and all that?

  • @Kydos37
    @Kydos37 4 года назад +4

    Been looking forward to this, always love to hear your interpretation and your thoughts on a piece.
    Do you have an opinion on the new syllabus with regards to the reduced amount of scales & arpeggios? I've seen more than a few accusations that the ABRSM are dumbing down that part of the syllabus to a harmful degree.
    For now I'm planning to follow the 19/20 syllabus for scales and arpeggios while learning pieces from the 21/22 syllabus. Or else learn all of the 21/22 syllabus but supplement with the additional scales and arpeggios from the 19/20 syllabus so that I could still be exam ready.

    • @JulianLambert
      @JulianLambert  4 года назад +2

      Thx Orion.
      I applaud the reduction in the number of scales. It always seemed like a bit of a slog, and that is true of my own experience when learning. Those that want to become proficient will do so and I think the demands will have deterred many from giving it a go. The expectations, from what I can see, are the same, just fewer of them.
      I also like sight-reading being an option, as Trinity do. It's a crucial skill, that comes with time, but does it really need to be a compulsory part of a formal assessment in the early stages?
      Yes, if you wish to be exam ready you will need to prepare either one syllabus or the other and, as you have commented, the 2019 & 2020 syllabus can be used till the end of 2021.
      BW - J

      @@JulianLambert Thanks so much for your considered response.
      I agree that it's important not to drive people away by having too many technical requirements detracting from the enjoyment of learning. However my concern would be that they lower the standard of their syllabus in order to attract and retain students. In particular I have seen criticism of the removal of the need to know all of the major and minor scales by Grade 5, with the accusation being that it results in a lower standard of player graduating from grade 5.
      Interesting to see that you support the reduction. I will have to look up more opinions on the changes, my own opinion is obviously woefully underqualified. Thanks again!

    • @JulianLambert
      @JulianLambert  4 года назад +2

      @@Kydos37 I really don't perceive it as a lowering of standards. All keys are will have been covered by the time G5 is reached. And then we get a chance to revisit them all in the upper grades.

      Hi Marta, short answer is no ...trills very often start on the upper note (a bit like an appogiatura) and this is shown in the exam booklet by the little notes just above - we start on a note on the line (the B). It's a beautiful piece I think - best wishes.

    Very nice, thank you. I have chosen A3,B1,C3. What do you think?

      Wonderful - have fun with those 3 ...and perhaps study a couple of others too, so you can select your favourites for the exam itself.

    Are these the right speed Julian lambert?

    • @JulianLambert
      @JulianLambert  3 года назад +1

      Yes. The speeds make sense to me. The exam booklet helpfully gives a metronome suggestion for each piece.

      Julian Lambert Thanks Julian. Watching this it looks like you never look down at the keys. Do you ever need to check your hand position or have you trained your peripheral vision? Also, are you looking at the bar you’re playin or something further ahead? Thanks again- Paul

    OMG, THIS is grade 2?!?!?!? I'm already playing Grade 3 material (though not ABRSM sheets), but I could never play THIS stuff!

    • @finparkour
      @finparkour 3 года назад

      Don't discourage yourself! often pieces look harder on paper, than they really are - give them ago and you might be surprised! (also, ABRSM goes only from 1-8 (not counting dip. etc), where as say RCM goes 1-10 - hence the bit harder songs!)

      @Julian Lambert I just finished 'the detective' and moving on to this book now. Three months of playing three hours a day. These are lovely songs you play.
