      Thanks for the comment, I have used that setting too and in certain situations it provides an amazing look!.
      However, I prefer the black and white with medium contrast - all personal preferences, but still an amazing camera!

    Hi great video you really show a great and sincere enthusiasm! Sometimes I get a little bored with my Fuji mirrorless camera and switch to a dslr in full manual mode. But I’ve used a m10 in the past and I’m occasionally tempted to sell all my gear and get a M camera! Well who knows unit then bye and thanks.

      Thanks for the comment. The Leica M cameras really are in a world of their own. It might not be right for everyone which is fine, but I always say to anyone try it out first, because it's a great experience to have, even if it just for the short time of renting one

      @@SebastianOakley I’ve made a test in the past with m10 and Q2 but those cameras are a different world. With the Q I feel at home, the M was a pain at first but I’ve seen potential 🙂

      Thanks for the comment, I love the M9 so much that I'm thinking of picking up another one, but yet an M2 is calling me!
      I've never used the M8 but love the circle lcd screen for battery and pic info - I see some good deals on them too in the UK, makes me think I should give one a go, just to say I've tried one!

      @@SebastianOakley I totally can understand you! I want a M2 with the 35mm framelines for long. But for my film streetphotography I use a Ideal Leica, a 1932 Standard. Small and simple. Zone focusing and sunny 16. More simple you can’t find! 🤗

      That sounds like an incredible setup, ideally I want to keep my M-E and then have the M2 for all film and that's my ideal setup

    Hello, what is your opinion regarding indoor or low light capabilities?

    • @SebastianOakley
      @SebastianOakley  10 месяцев назад +2

      Great question: I think honestly it all has to do with the speed of your lens and how good or poorly the indoor lighting is.
      If you have an F/1.4 or F/2 Lens then you can get by however, if you want to stop down your only really good in my opinion to ISO 800 to get a shot
      If you want to shoot at F/5.6 indoors in very low light then maybe the M-E isn't for you.

  • @jim0266

    Had the M-E, but for me the M262 is the better camera if you can find one. It's just as "zen" as the the M-E but has a better VF patch, better sensor

    • @SebastianOakley
      @SebastianOakley  2 месяца назад

      See I like the CCD sensor of the M-E/M9 - while I understand the CMOS senor of the 262 might have better performance, for me is doesn't have the rich colors

    • @jim0266
      @jim0266 2 месяца назад +1

      @@SebastianOakley Perhaps it was my copy, but with my M-E, but I seemed to struggle with the color balance in daylight. I shot DNG and used LR, but ever when I white balanced against at WhiBal card the image still seemed too blue/magenta. The 262 seemed better out of the camera for colors and easier to manipulate. But as long as we find what works for us that's all the counts! Sad part is how little I've had the urge to make images. Hoping the passion returns at some point.

      This video about the Leica M-E is actually my own personal camera however, other Leica cameras and lenses that have appeared on this channel have come from Leica.
      In my day job I'm a journalist in the photography industry and have access to such things, so it does help this channel a lot.

    I just picked up an M10-P because I got it for a good deal but I’m thinking I’ll sell it and use the money to pick up an M9 and another modern camera for use in low light and when I need auto focus. Thing is built like a tank though. I’d watched the reviews but nothing like feeling it in the hand

    • @SebastianOakley
      @SebastianOakley  8 месяцев назад +1

      I have used the M10-P a lot and it's a wonderful camera, no question about it - but I love my M9 so much! If you do sell and get an M9 just make sure it has has its sensor glass changed to ID:15 so you won't have corrosion issues.
      The M9 just produces the best colors I ha e seen in any camera I have used, the Leica SL2-S is close... But the M9 is in it's own league!

    The CCD sensor produces vibrant colours with more saturation and bite than a CMOS sensor, and that is in any camera . I used to have a Nikon D200 years ago and I still have my D70 that is twenty years old. These cameras produced images with much more bite and saturation than my Nikon and Canon CMOS sensor cameras and even my M240 is not as vibrant. The problem is that the files from a CCD have unfotunately much less latitude for post manipulation. A CCD camera is a bit like a film camera, that you have to get it right or almost right in camera. For B&W though, they are brilliant, but then again so is my M240.

    • @SebastianOakley
      @SebastianOakley  5 месяцев назад +1

      That is so true... I love the colors of my Leica M-E and it's CCD sensor, but if you do get it wrong you know about it.
      Comparing it to film is a good reference point

  • @MakePictures
    @MakePictures 4 месяца назад +1

    is this the 220? i had no idea there was an M that has ccd

    • @SebastianOakley
      @SebastianOakley  4 месяца назад +1

      Yes this is the Leica M-E (Type 220) this is basically a Leica M9 - without the framelines selection lever and the USB port.
      Leica made two CCD models - the first digital Leica, the Leica M8 which was a crop 10MP CCD sensor and the Leica M9 (M-E) which is the first Full-Frame 18MP CCD sensor.
      I love this camera and it's CCD sensor

      @@SebastianOakley thanks for this! i'm definitely going to be on the lookout for this specific one

    • @SebastianOakley
      @SebastianOakley  4 месяца назад

      The Leica M9 and Leica M-E do suffer from corrosion on the sensor glass now and then, so it's best to look for one that has had this replaced else you will notice artifacts on your images above F/8 or so.
      Some simply photoshop them out and carry on, others want a bit of piece - depends what you want, but have to say this camera is amazing

  • @Biosynchro
    @Biosynchro 9 месяцев назад +2

    The only reason why I'd never use one: the shutter. It's terrible! Way too obtrusive. (Can someone maybe swap an M11 shutter into the M9?) Otherwise, I do love these old CCD bodies.
    DR is not bad. Resolution is pretty good, if not world beating. Crappy buffer? I can handle that. Single SD card slot? Not a big deal - I've never had a card fail, ever. No live view? Doesn't matter, it's a rangefinder. Slow image review? I can take it.
    The other problem is that these things are now way too expensive for what they are. I'll take an M240 for less money.
    Bonus tip: I found that it's better to underexpose the RAW than to change the ISO value. That way your DR is preserved and your noise remains the same. Of course this doesn't work if you're shooting JPEGs.
    Also, I have found that chrominance NR is the only thing you need to apply for noisy frames. Don't worry about luminance NR (I never use it for any camera).

      thanks for the comment, i got mine over a year ago for under 1.3K... now for a good one its more 2.5K which I agree is very expensive.

    Do you love this camera? Is it amazing? Is it absolutely the best camera you've ever had? . . . LOL ! All kidding aside, it's just too bad that it's grey instead of black. The brass looks especially good against black when it comes through with use. Probably could get it professionally painted black, though. . . . But you'd have to wait even longer for the brass to come through : (

    • @SebastianOakley
      @SebastianOakley  7 месяцев назад

      Yes, it is the best camera I've ever used. If you want this camera in black you can buy the Leica M9 - basically the same camera just with a built-in USB port and a frame line selector, and they brass really well with use
