  • From 3D print to metal Terminator skull. Some additional work was needed to make some parts, though this method is faster than hammering everything out of flat sheet and allows for better detail.

    I love that the little pits from casting, blacked in end up looking like it's battle worn and adds to the authenticity of it all. What 3d printing and cnc machines have added to casting, etc is mind blowing. You said in a previous comment that you think this project it too niche to get a lot of likes, I say don't trust someone who hasn't see terminator! Beautiful work.

    • @AndysMachines
      @AndysMachines  3 года назад +7

      Thanks! Yes, you're right. I could polish it further and make it all shiny and perfect, but I'm deliberately leaving in some of the marks and even accentuating them to give it a slightly worn/weathered appearance, which I think is a lot more fitting.

    So glad to see real machine work on T800 ! I’m sure you will get great reviews as I did in 2002 for my fiberglass bondo unit I made for my computer repair store ! I made my skull by freezing and print screen of the move as the terminator was chasing Sarah and Kile through the factory. If I had a 3D printer I could have made a ton of money selling them for man caves! So many people offered me money for the unit in my store, it was ridiculous! I did a wax model and aluminum casting but ran in to the same as you did but worse! Not knowing what I was doing! Good luck and great job!

    You're getting better and better with these builds dude! Might I suggest putting some sprues on the parts to let the metal flow to the places it's not reaching, and to make a vacuum table so you can vacuum cast, that'll stop most of the issues I see :)

    • @AndysMachines
      @AndysMachines  4 года назад +4

      That actually is a vacuum table at 3:00 though I didn't go into detail on that in this video, it worked really well for the small parts. But yes, you're right about sprues, some of the larger parts I couldn't cast on the table (jaw, back of skull) failed because I made the sprues too short and there wasn't enough pressure to fill the mould.

      Yes, good tip. One that I've seen done and known about for a long time, but I've never actually tried it myself! You can also apparently resharpen a dull file by dipping it in acid, I've even heard vinegar works, but you have to soak it overnight.

    The irony that a machine could make this better is....ironic. But the work is very well done!

    OMG thats an amazing work! Well done. SO much work but the looks is awesome!
    Either you go got to try ceramich shell investment casting next time - much simplier to do and probalby you would not have to start with so many parts.
    I am going to cast such a piece but not only the outside parts but also filled inside - so not a hollow model like yours. Mine also would not move the jaw but would stand alone as a figure in pure AL.
    The model is ready just needs to be burned out and casted.

      Yes, I was thinking towards the end that it would have been better to make some parts with shell casting. The bigger parts didn't work with the vacuum, I also had to make custom flasks for each piece and use a lot of expensive investment plaster compared to the amount of metal actually being poured.
      For larger parts I need in future I will definitely try shell casting, I've never done it before though so I'll have to do some research.

      @@AndysMachines If you havent done it yet just check my Valentines Day video from my channel - I make there a piece from start to finish and in the middle of the video I amek also a ceramic shell.
      Maybe you can get something from it and make it also work for you :)

      I just watched your video, nicely made and I like the way you included the things that went wrong too, things don't always go right the first time!
      Yes, I will definitely give shell casting a try next time I have a piece that's suitable. I'm doing more small parts at the moment using the vacuum-investment method.

      @@AndysMachines oh. Thank you for watchin m8, and especially of your opinion.
      I like very much how other people cast small pieces and use the vaccum casting method. But the thing is just not for me. I like to make bigger sized statues/figures.
      Will try someday tho, and do a video about it, because tou can also do ad „casting tree” method and use it in ceramic shell investment casting without the vaccuum process. I like to see how it gors for me to cast coupleof things, smaller .... maybe channel tags/coins such way 🤔.
      Either way. Waiting unpatient for your next casting and making a figures/statues video 🤘🏻👌💪. Keep up the nice work👊👍

    Very nice! I probably would have given upon seeing that the cast parts came out so rough. Then again, I don't have an entire machine shop at my disposal. One thing though, I'm surprised you went to so much trouble, even making the eyes movable, but you didn't add lights to them. And with the covers in the head being separate, you could have added a CPU.

    • @AndysMachines

      The parts that came out rough were mostly due to my mistakes than the casting process, but it was easier to fix them than recast each whole part. I have made eyes with lights in in the past: ruclips.net/video/RG9HpijORLw/видео.html and I'm working on something similar for this skull, there's also going to be a lot more going on inside the head.

      @@AndysMachines I know absolutely nothing about programming microcontrollers, but a really cool feature would be if you could add motion tracking to the head so that when someone comes close, the eyes light up and follow their movements. :)
