I love the idea of a chisel! I'm using a plane iron at the moment, but there's no handle. Something you might find helpful is to place a piece of stiff cardboard at the back of the book you're planing. The last few pages tend to bend rather than get cut - the cardboard just keeps them upright and you can cut a little into the cardboard without bending the last couple of pages.
He mentions that he places the block between wood two boards, the back board higher than the front thus avoiding bent or rough cuts on the last pages.. Duh
oh man this is beautiful. seriously. if i had any of these tools my experience would have been so much easier! haha as it is i have knees instead of a clamp. two books and my arse instead of a book press, a paint scraper instead of a skiving knife. OMG i do make things difficult for myself. just getting to the casing in stage of my first book!
A book called "bookbinding as a handcraft" by Manly Banister is a great book for learning and has a lot of DIY plans for making tools and presses. Used copy sell for under $25
Hello Jesse. I have been using a chisel to straighten the edges of my wife's notepads and it had never occured to me to round the edge of the tool like that. I will be rounding the edge of the chisel that I use (also an old chisel) this evening. Thanks for sharing. Your books are very nice!
Hi, I like that you make your own kit. Trimming is the bookbinding skill I need to improve the most. Can I ask how you ensure that the book block is set in your press with the spine parallel to the guide block on which the chisel rests?
Great idea! I Actually was considering selling a blade like this...it's an old idea. I would suggest that the part the blade rests on be wider, like 1-1/2" wide, so there isn't any chance of the blade tilting. Tilt and cut once and you start cutting uphill. For those who don't want to make their own, I build hand binding equipment for sale and make a plough that does what he is showing here, plus the press to use it on. affordablebindingequipment.com
AffordBindEquipment You look like you make surprisingly beautiful items. At this stage I'm more concerned with cost than setup quality, but impressive work.
Método impresiso y muy desprolijo... Es mejor usar una buena cizalla. Cualquier alteración del ángulo en la mano cambia el corte y hace desastres en los bordes del papel. Es un recurso para muy pocas páginas.
Please can you make me one and send to me ~ I live in Wales 🏴 of United Kingdom 🇬🇧 ~ and let me know how much in pound sterling it would cost? Would be most appreciated!!
This is a really good video, i wish I'd seen it years ago!
Your chisel is a tutorial all on its own.
thank you for sharing. you made it look like a breeze.
do you have a video showing how to build this plow?

I'm watching the video and thinking the same thing about the cardboard

I just made what I needed with the help of a bench grinder. I had a lot of fun with it!

Thanks for sharing! Interesting idea and tool.
Clever idea. A $5 tool and a little elbow grease replaces a much more expensive alternative, and gets the same result.
Thank you for explaining this! It's such a great idea. I hope Tomoe River is easier to get now! It's too bad it changed a bit.
Very impressed!
Awesome skills, dude!
I think I got what I was looking for. I will try this out soon
I would like to know how it works. Let me know if you need any more info!
Amazon started carrying tomoe river I made a book for a friend that uses shimmer inks! it really showcases your ink
Nice job!

This is a good video my dude.
Hope you're doing well

How i can make colorful edges?
Wonderful, dear JA.
I'm wondering if a leather worker's head-knife would work. Semi-circular blade, single edge bevel, longer cutting edge.
That sounds like the perfect edge for this. Let me know how or works!
You are a god damn genius
Hi thank you for thes video

Unfortunately I don't make books any more. Maybe someday I'll get a space for it and give it a go again!
Great info, Thank you :)
what kind of thread do you use? I am looking for alternatives to using linen thread
I used linen thread that I bought in Etsy
good job
