    For future reference, one of the easiest ways to remove rust from steel is to boil some vinegar over a fire and toss the parts in. leaving them to boil for around 2 or 3 hours usually results in the rust just sloughing off.

    you might want to look into getting a variable speed grinding wheel with a steel wire brush wheel if you plan on doing more restoration of metal parts. They make pretty quick work of most rusty things, and I've found that on a lot of things you can even skip the electrolysis. It would save you a lot of time and hand work and it leaves you with a fairly decent mat finish. Just be careful and use eye protection

  • @firebird8600

  • @mr-x7689
    @mr-x7689 3 года назад

    I know its 2 years after, but important info none the less. Don't heat iron up if its stuck. The metal swells when heated, and shrinks when cools. and by heating it up and due the swelling, so is it possible that the nut might not fit any more. it could shink to a degree where it wont be possible to use it agein, or remain sligtly to large.
    I used shrinking + swelling when making tongs in blacksmithing.

    This is so awesome! It's also exactly the kind of thing the protagonist of my current story project would do. (It's a flintlock fantasy about a Half-Orc woman who's a bit of a jack-of-all-trades.) She finds things other people see as junk, restores them, and even gives them magical properties. Do you guys mind if I have her restore a book press like the one you restored in one of the stories? This thing has a slight steampunk aesthetic to it that would fit nicely into the story setting.

    I know this is way too late, but here's a hint for anyone seeing this and contemplating doing this, or something similar. While he is holding the drill to polish the brass knobs, instead, put the drill in a vise, attached to the table, you'll find it MUCH easier to control, and MUCH easier on your hands. Also, it's very important to grease all the parts before assembly, for ease of use, and a rust inhibitor, making it last much longer. great work by the way.

  • @scocassovegetus
    @scocassovegetus 4 года назад

    All you had to do was soak the entire think in a tub of white vinegar for a day or two, and it would come out looking brand new. I do this for many things, including old rusted metal tools, always works. Then immediately after, I rinse it very well, then oil it before it rusts, because rust will start immediately. Done.

The owner was so impressed that he did not just junk it and rebuilt it , he use some "waste" Mother Of Pearl paint on it, for a no extra charge, only thing was a picture of final product after rebuild. which I took and we sent him a 5x7 and 8x10 color.

    Hey if you run in to the rusty nuts again try heating it to a color change "cherry red" works best and add parafine wax after you remove the heat? This will the melt down in to the gaps then try twisting it off again.
    For rust removal iused a saturated sodium hydroxide "lye" adding this stuff to water will produce heat so take it slow warm lightly to use as a soak for steel.

    If you add some sodium hydroxide to your water first the Sodium hydroxide will heat the water quite hot, add lots of soda ash. Also if your Cathode is larger and a piece of new metal that has it's FeO3 (black iron oxide) intact it will simply exchange the red iron oxide for the black iron oxide giving a black iron finish, very elegant.
    Great care needs to be taken using Sodium Hydroxide and more is not better, in addition hands and eyes needs protection. Simple chemistry.
