Omega Seamaster 42mm: pros and cons compared to Rolex Submariner

- How does the 42 mm omega Seamaster with laser cut waves I’ll compare to the Rolex Submariner at 40 mm? What are the pros and cons of this new classic Omega dive watch?
Can't understand how you can emphasize so much that the lume on the seamster is not as great as in the sub while the seamaster has antireflective coating in both sides of the sapphire while the sub doesn't, that is much more noticeable and makes the dial of the Omega way more stunning, while the lume is such an small detail in comparison.
Omega is much more eye catching, but as you say, the sub is more iconic. Given the price point, I’d opt for the Omega.
I have the chrome, but a dark skin tone. Looks perfect. I wear it everyday, even if I'm staying at home on a sunday
8950,- ist totally unrealistic for the sub, it's more like 12000,-. The omega is about 3600,-. The omega has a better movement certification and is safe up to 12000 Gauss. Even the Milgaus is only safe up to 1000 Gauss. For today everyday use this can be very important. The face is made of ceramic and wont fade or break or whatever. So where does the sub really stand out? A better clicking bezel?... Cmon if you're honest it's just the name. If you buy such a watch, you don't buy the watch only, you buy image and emotions. That's OK. I understand that, but don't try to tell the people, that the sub is a better watch, because from the technical point of view, the seamaster is the better watch.
Omega to me is a better watch with regards to the movement and as far as materials is just the same. The only thing that Rolex has going for it is the name and resale value. Both are driven by Rolex’s marketing, human beings want what they can’t have and Rolex has been terrific on limiting production to create exclusivity. Yes Rolex makes a quality product as does Omega, Omega makes a zillion watches a year and Rolex makes 11 watches a year and that is the only difference.

My Omega Seamaster will never lose value as I will never sell it
True watch lover.
The mistake with your prior purchase was only the dial color. In black, you have a stunner. I own it in blue and it’s fantastic.
ALTA GEAR yea you don’t get the gorgeous glossy dial on the grey colour, it’s more of a Matt finish
I have the blue dial as well and love it!
Cheers,
Rick
I have the grey dial version and it is not glossy at all...just classy...also the steel blue hands are a real joy to behold and wear
@@justonemovement it's hideous and not worthy even of a scrap yard
@@Agent-vj3ns we agree to disagree....what may be a beauty for me may be hideous for you....enjoy
I also have the chrome dial Omega 300m and the Sub date and sold the omega but bought the same one back months later. Can’t believe I sold it. Amazing watch, love it!
I’ve had mine for almost a year now and love it every single day that I wear it
Spectacular price. I’d buy that every day of the week for $2900
where can I find it for that price ?
Tick Tock Watches the only way to get it at that price is to do what the dog trainer did and find a poor shmuck who wants to dump and talk him into taking a big loss for your gain
@@luxuryfood3810 his friend got it at the "military price" which means he probably bought it from the military exchange, their list price is 20% below MSRP, and occasionally you can find them going on sale for another 20% off of that already discounted price bringing $5,200 down to $3k and change
I'm currently waiting for them to restock the blue version, hopefully before Black-Friday
so IF his friend got the watch at that deep a discount he probably didn't lose sleep over selling it for 2,900
It will be interesting to see where prices are on the omega in a few years. Whatever it may be I am keeping mine. Love it.
It's Time Jomashop already dropped the silver dial to $3800
I've seen brand new SMPs going for around 3000 - 3150 (€). It's a pretty good deal.
The pricing keeps dropping. Frankly, I should have waited! I could have bought a mint one with warranty for hundreds less than I paid. Oh well. Love my watch.
I have a theory...let us wait to see if it works....with the shortage created by the Rolex ADs about the sub and the closest substitute being the omega SMP300 I am guessing we should see the price of this baby go up...at least by a bit
@@ItsTimePictures 4 years later... prices are sky high
I love my Omega! The continuous Rolex mantra from watch guys is all about some level of artificial prestige.
Yep, always come with the Rolex crap. To get one you got to please people, jump through hoops. No thanks.
You mention the escape valve is there for heritage purposes, but i actually think its there for design purposes. I get that its not technically needed, but i actually like it. It makes the watch a little more sporty, and this watch is clearly trying to be sporty. Its not trying to be a rolex sub which goes for a little more of a sophisticated look. That valve puts the watch closer in the sporty category to a chronograph, just without all the other fuss on the dial, which i like. So its a perfect mix of sporty and classy.
Beautiful watch Marc. Congrats on the rebuy!
That omega looks amazing
The white face one is gorgeous😎
Marc, i really enjoyed your comparison of these two watches. I own a 2020 Submariner and LOVE it. I also plan to purchase the Omega soon so i'll own both watches. I do disagree with you on one major point. Almost no one can realistically get a steel Submariner for Rolex's msrp. So it's basically a $13-15k watch which makes it 3x what an Omega costs. Given the very minor differences between them, i suspect the Omega is the better choice for most people... Your thoughts ?
Let’s just all call it “THE DIVER WATCH” because no other can touch it😎
For the Sub being the more expensive watch, I see them a lot. I mean, A LOT. That Diver 300 is a stunner.
Yeah, the black dial is the way to go with these new ones IMO, nice one!
I sold my blue one might getting this black
No, the white dial is the way to go!! It's even commanding a price premium in the used market
@@stevenc9207 Now it is, don’t forget the white dial came after the others ;)
Great video! I love both of these dive watches.
The black version is better than the silver dial version after time.I don’t want to take a loss on the piece though so I’m just sticking with it.
Omega everyday..sub is just outdated..only reason ppl buy it is its value and brand heritage
Even now it's better than the 2020 Sub...Rolex has lost its way...they're a very good watch with superb marketing, whereas Omega is an excellent watch with no so good brand identity (the gazillion special editions just suck big time)
Hey marc this is a good rebuy. Black wave dial SMP300 is totally your style
Take the money issue away (resale, initial cost) which do you like better?
I don’t sleep with watch , Lume problem solved
I love my black dial 300M. At the moment they are still a bargain for what you get. With Omega raising prices and knowing this is underpriced at both retail and especially used I can see it rising quite a lot by the end of 2020, at least at retail.
Omega raised the price on this model once already, very early on. I can't see them doing again anytime soon.
@@therapiststeve3294 They raised it twice in the UK in 2019. It went from 3.5K to 3.8K to now 4.1K at Omega dealers. It's in high demand. Given the absurd price of the Bond Seamaster I have no reason to believe they will hold the price in 2020
And again did just raised prices in us and will continue to raise
Beautiful Watch Congratulations definitely a bargain on the price
Am contemplating to buy that watch and keep it on a Omega NATO strap the laser black dial is one in a kind

I have both watches and It always bothers me that people pick Rolex because of value proposition. The weight of the Rolex and the taper of the bracelet makes you forget it’s not on your wrist, but the Omega is beautiful to look at. It’s more robust, and the antimagnetic property makes it nearly worry-free to wear. Besides the Rolex keeping its value, what other positives does it have?
eflo82 I have both as well. The Rolex is more elegant to look at but omega is much more exciting to look at. The Rolex is inferior as a watch but so many people buy a watch based on looks and social status

If you have no intention on flipping or selling the watch, nor need a watch to sell yourself as something you’ve become or accomplished. Then buy what makes you happy and is the more satisfying time piece for you. Unfortunately this world is full of superficial image concerned individuals that worry what others thing about what they spent on a particular item. Stop trying to keep up w/ the Jones’s. The Jones most probably can’t afford half of what they go out and buy. They are broke at a higher level.
Don’t try to be another them!!!!
BE THE FIRST YOU..!!
The rolex only retains it's value, or increases if you can actually buy one at RP. Most people are buying a new Sub for $13,000. Which means it doesn't gain any value for you. If you're like me, and want a brand new Omega with box and papers, you can negotiate with your AD, and buy one for around $4500. You may lose a little if you ever sell it, but if you enjoy it for a while first, who cares? The Omega is technically a better watch.
I own both , omega excites me whenever i pick it on my wrist. Rolex does not thrill me anymore .. You can wear your omega with pleasure in every single day in every condition you encounter but you cant do the same with rolex. So the spirit of omega started to mesmerize me more than any rolex. Omega a modest watch including better technology and spirit. Rolex hype and scarcity killing the brand people fed up with these games and dont wanna be in anymore
I own the white dial on a bracelet and it is the perfect daily watch for me. It has so much to discover on it. You can literally look at it for hours and forget the time.
I have that one too now and it’s by far my favorite color.
@@marcgoldbergdogtrainer did you sell this black one? Waiting for my white dial to ship.. did the same mil discount your friend did
Great daily watch Mark. I had one and still miss it.
I’m waiting for my blue dial from the PX for 3300( great price). I got rid of my silver dial too in about a month
Thanks Marc, very informative video.
great video Marc. could you do a comparison between tudor pelagos and seamaster 300 auto?
That watch is beautiful Marc. I just did not like the looks of the other Seamaster you had. What a great deal you got on it too. I’ve been thinking of getting one but have held off. Now I’m wanting one now for sure. Good to hear from you again.
Glad to see one of the originals is still making content!
Congrats Marc! 🤩 I’m happy for you making this purchase again, I think its a keeper this time for you! I looked at them in London last summer, didn’t talk price, but I am sure I would have gotten a 10% discount of the retailprice!! But nevertheless it’s truly a fantastic Omega. I’m still looking for my first Omega, in your opinion, Please give me your advice!! The Speedy or this Seamaster 300?😉💪🏻 As the first Omega for me, I’m sorry to say I can’t afford both of them, .....not yet for a while!😉😉👍🏻
I couldn't care less about whether Omega prices go up or down. I have the diver 300 in black and wouldn't part with it if you offered me double what I paid for it. I love it, it's a keeper!
A nice and honest review
Honestly if Omega removed the wart and changed the hour/minute hand they would have a killer watch.
Wouldn't be a Diver 300m without them.
And the hard to turn bezel (OK LET'S CHANGE EVERYTHING) hahahaha. It's a bad design.
Francisco Aguilar it’s not hard if you do it right. Thumb bottom left longest finger top right turns as easy as my Pepsi rolex
Motorcar Classics I like the hands not a big fan of the wart but doesn’t bother me
YES, dislike the skeletonized hands.
I own the early seamaster in black with the wave dial which I purchased twice. Had the quartz originally then went for co-axial. Prefer the size and thickness on earlier version to the new. However being a Rolex and omega fan I think the omega makes the sub look very dated. I would like a sub to complete my trio of Rolex but given the price I would be happy with the new seamaster
Had the white dial with rubber strap, had to return due to a chip on the bezel. Miss it ever since... however couple days later Rolex AD called and got 2020 Datejust oyster rhodium dial😎 retail price, so I guess am OK. Still plan to get the SMO 300
Hi there Marc - not too sure what i should buy a planet ocean 39.5 or one of these. please help? Thanks Jamie
What'd you end up getting? The PO is beautiful but the issue I have with them is that they're so heavy and chunky. For regular everyday use, the 300 is already almost too heavy.
Nice review, Marc, thank you.
Have it in blue, love it.
Like your assessment on both watches
Just what i was thinking before you commented👍
the white is just awesome. that's why I have dived in.
How is the watch running today? Is it still running at minus 1 (-1) second per day?
I’ve met like one dude that has used every helium escape valve. And he only used it once
Silver or White are better with blued hands, the chrome really is striking.
Hi Marc, I've been waiting for a post. ;)
BTW, I don't like the wavy lines on the dial, the scalloped bezel, or the wart. Not my style, that's all.
In those final seconds, when you express your preference for the Sub as you hold it up to the camera, it occured to me that the Seamaster actually looked better on you. That iconicism also means the Sub is just so familiar, as to appear bland by comparison. Just my 2 cents' worth (oh, and I love my Pierce Brosnan Bond-era Quartz version, so not biased at all! :-) )
You have my very two favorite watches on your hand sir ...
It is what it is, nice vid Mark!
In time, i will hopefully add the white Seamaster to my 2254.50 and 2531.80
As soon as Omega makes this 40 mm, without the helium valve and with a tapering bracelet, Omega will sell A TON of these pieces
But then everyone will say they're just copying Rolex, the helium valve sets it apart from all the other generic dive watches.
100% would buy it straight away
They already are selling a ton of them! They always have!
The He valve at least has as purpose, even if I won’t use it. But the cyclops doesn’t for anybody with a driver’s license (i.e. corrected vision). I’ve no use for a chunk of sapphire glued to the crystal that obscures the dial AND is only visible at 2.5x magnification within a 10 degree cone of view. I would look like my grandfather trying to read his watch; it makes the function unreadable. I grabbed a SubC ND last year but sold it. Still black ceramic Seamaster. I don’t regret it and I don’t miss the Sub.
I just purchased this watch, to me it is one of the nicest collections of seamaster ever released by omega. In terms of finishes, it's top notch! However, I went for the black rubber strap and I must say that I prefer it in its sportier look. Diving watches are much better looking on rubber straps! Let's be real, only Rolex, Patek and AP produce good quality and fancy looking stainless bracelets... To me, it's more a second or third watch than a watch that I would wear on a daily basis.
Tried the bracelet version and the strap version at an AD today. To my surprise, the strap version felt better on my wrist and looked better as well. Going to seal the deal on it tomorrow I hope. 👍
Omega has better bracelets tho 🤦🏻♂️
I like it. I am thinking about getting the older 2254 that you previously had. A bit smaller and thinner proportions and I believe it has much better lume (in the black, not the blue Bond version).
Good choice. I just got one off WUS and it's everything I expected it to be.
Get one, it is a classic in its way. It is extremely thin for a 300m diver, which is something that makes 1120-based Seamasters stand out, and the military-inspired indices and sword hands are practically timeless. They also have amazing lume. The 2254 has many classic Seamaster cues, such as the scalloped bezel, wave dial, seahorse caseback engraving, and lyre lugs. I also happen to think the Speedmaster bracelet looks nicer than the Bond style. Prices are going up too, so if you get a good example you probably won't lose anything on it. Marc is right about the bezel, there are better ones, and not everyone likes the HEV (I actually do, it is a classic SMP feature that makes it different, to my mind). Mine is from the last year of production and is currently running at +3 seconds per WEEK. The 1120 cal. (2892) is rock solid. My least favourite features are the crown guards and small crown, although the smoothness of the crown action is a delight. At the current price everyone thinking about it should pick one up, it is a great example of a design that sits neatly between vintage and modern.
I think you will like the legibility on that better than your silver dial. Try it on a coated nylon strap.
Did you upgrade your camera? The video looks great👌
I licked the lens.
@@marcgoldbergdogtrainer Good job😁
Thanks for the fine examination of the Omega. The Omega bracelet looks confused and scattered. That bold 42mm Omega needs a bold bracelet to complement it.
Nice video Marc. I've been considering getting the gray dial version, but you don't seem to recommend it much!
Check it out personally....it is stunning...the grey dial one...with the blue rubber strap....even better
Bought the blue as I already have a black sub. I actually prefer the black seamaster.
do you have blackout in your place for 30 minutes that you will panic about what time it is? whats with the 30 mins lum?
hey buddy whats your thoughts on the chrono version ?
Enjoyed your video.Informative.A lovely watch ,even though not flawless.Alot of watch for the money ,given the price of the iconic submariner. Can't decide which is the best dial colour.Yours looked great.
Thank you for your very entertaining feature and best wishes.
The “wart” is the visual signature at a distance. The Rolex looks like a million homage watches from a distance.
Beautiful watch. I like the blue better though.
Cal. 8800 is low spec in real-world situation. Cal.8900 used in Aquaterra and PO has much better reliability , but they use that small movement for a good size. Size of 8800 is 67% of 8900, 64% of 3135, 47% of mt5602.
I love the 8900’s for the quick set hour hand. Wish all the sports watches had it.
Omega better in all respects to submarine inside and out,r except the skeleton hands.
I have never been a fan of the non- tapering, gaudy Omega bracelet. That and that alone keeps me from buying one. I love that dial though. Too bad. The Sub puts me to sleep at this point.

Michael Lenzi I have - makes it more of a console or cuff, than just jewelry.

hobear637 it’s so deep
Just paid $5200 with tax to get the Omega Seamaster 42mm with the rubber band from the official Omega Store. Once in awhile there are watches that you should pay full price and buy it directly from the boutique. This is one of them. Don't think I will ever sell this one.
I have them both but my Omega is the blue one. My Rolex is more elegant and conservative but I think that the Omega is more modern in design and better technical.
And just a remark on the silver dial. I saw one at the AD and I couldn't use the date at all. Dark blue number in a dark date window is not a great combo. I am happy for my 300M with blue dial and blue bezel.
Your lume points are well taken. I prefer the older version end link design better as well as the older sloping, less shear cut bracelet links. Also, now it needs a special case back remover too, which is a pain. Tick tock, tick tock...I foresee a “re-flip” in your future....
I swear the only argument people have for the Rolex is the fact it holds it’s price. It’s ridiculous overpriced for absolutely no reason, the Omega beating it with specs hands down, and value too 👌🏻
The only reason Rolex holds its value is because they are great workhorse watches. What puts a lot of folks off is the attitude that their watches are better than all others. Their QC isn't flawless; they make mistakes like other watch companies.
I had the two tone for a bit . No doubt it’s a well made watch but in the end I just don’t like the aesthetic . Like many don’t like the escapement the bezel-or hands . The laser cut dial is cool though. The
quality is certainly great for what they can be bought for .
I just paid list for a Seamaster, at my Rolex AD. It was mainly to remind them to f'ing call me when a Sub Date arrives. Don't get me wrong, I like the Seamaster a lot. And it works very well for everyday. The other bit, about the Sub, is why I didn't haggle. I'm not a flipper, and I like having my name on the paperwork. I did recently get a perfect Datejust (41, blue/sticks/fluted/jubilee) from the same AD. And I'll pay list for the Sub too. So the list price thing cuts both ways. I'd like to walk away from the Sub, but I won't. The answer is "illness".
I definitely like the black and the black/gold version much better then the silver dial.
I wish the submariner had better AR coating, I really hate my Submariners AR coating, always glare in daylight and that it doesn’t have magnetic protection. Two simple inexpensive things Rolex can do to make the sub much better. Would love a crystal back but seeing Rolex movements during servicing they are not anything special to look at, so most likely won’t happen.
Peter Choma I thought Rolex doesn’t use AR coating at all?
@@eyeheartsushi2212 Only under the cyclops.
Péter Csicsics Gotcha. Makes perfect sense. Thanks.
Yes only under the cyclops but I wish they had it under the whole crystal.
Peter Choma What I’ve read is Rolex likes their watches to reflect light to draw attention to the watch and keep the brand standing out.
Enjoy your watches Marc, It's about the journey. Greetings from Holland
Have had the blue version for 12 months and it is fantastic. Accurate to within a second/day. Finished much better than a Rolex....which is just a high volume factory made watch. It's not haute horology. As for investment value watch Rolex prices plummet over the next few years once buyers become a bit more discerning. In fact I have a Seiko Marinemaster that is finished better than a Rolex.
Th MMs are incredibly good watches...it's just brand recognition and general watch collector snobbery that prevents them from being even more popular and highly regarded.
I bought this exact Seamaster with Good discount at an AD in December ‘18. It was my daily until I snagged a very lightly used SubC ND last November. The Omega has held +0.0 to + 0.1 spd for the entire time I’ve owned; I just set it on the dresser. The Sub was bought me by my buddy at an AD about six months prior and he never wore it. The finishing on the Sub was worse, the case and bracelet scratched faster and more easily, and it barely kept +1.9spd if it lived on a winder every night. It was well outside of that spec (+6spd usually, but it varied greatly; unlike the Omega). Add in that my cheap Bluetooth desktop speaker and wireless phone charging pad turned the Sub into a compass nearly every time I wore it, and it saw little wrist time before getting sold. TBH, I don’t miss it.
I have same black one on a black rubber strap. Love it!
I have the bracelet version but i want to order the rubber strap. Does is feel secure and sturdy?
@@lurox5183 It dose feel secure , it also feels comfortable since rubber is much lighter.
I swapped my Seamaster for a sub. I just couldn't take the Seamaster bracelet anymore. It was too thick and way too clunky. I wish they could upgrade the Seamaster with a tapered new style bracelet.
Good review Marc. I heard the bracelet is a little sharp? Does it dig into the wrist?

I looked at your old video on the blue dial you said the reason was the skeleton hands / lume wasn't what you were looking for ?
Does anyone else’s clasp on this make a click noise when you tap it? And when the clasp it shut and upside down the swing arm hangs down a bit
The barometer of the bezel clickiness and maneuverability with wet hands is ridiculous. Given that the majority of the owners don’t use them as dive watches lol. I own the Sedna gold and stainless and don’t plan to take it diving. BUT, that doesn’t mean that I don’t want the build quality to be lacking. So to even judge it for those features, it’s just ridiculous and subjective. IMO :-) I purchased it for its great looks, heritage, capabilities and build quality. I can use the bezel with no issues or hinderances for my use cases (and probably the same for most).
I just saw this video as I am considering the purchase of this watch. Do you still own this watch?
Yep I do.
@@marcgoldbergdogtrainer can you show me where to get a brand new one for $3800?

4th ! Helluva vlog report to come back with!!! Loved it! How's the NEW book coming?
This answers your question Marc. It’s definitely an illness. 😬😁
That's the problem. ROLEX name hold's it's value, even if the OMEGA works better and last much longer. Rolex investment value remains the best and sadly OMEGA is like buying a new car... once you buy it, it will lose value as soon as you drive it off the lot. I love my OMEGA. Thanks for sharing
It's a really nice piece but I am not much for the valve on the side.
I bought the first model with the sword hand in 2002. In 10 years the bezel will be stiff and hard to turn. Not broken, only dusts getting inside. It just slip from your hands. You need to soak in the water to be able to rotate. In sum, after a long periods of inactivity on the bezel you need a service for a clean up . Omega designed for marketing purpose but it has a terrible flaw. You better sell it as i did 13 years later. I'm not saying you sell it right now but consider in the near future. Buy the Planet Ocean instead. That's a contender for the Submariner.
I’ve been watching these videos between the submariner and the Rolex....no one mentioned that the Rolex is 3x the price of the Omega...smh...I’ll take 2 Omega please!
If you want your watch to be new, the Sub is $13 grand minimum. You can buy the Omega new from an AD for around $4500. You can add a speedmaster and railmaster to your collection while your at it, for $13k total, and have a beautiful 3 watch collection...
I have less than $10K invested in the blue version of this SMP300 and an Aqua Terra Ryder Cup watch. I'll take each one, individually, over their Rolex counterparts. Much less two versus one.
Here's why I don't like this watch:
- 42 mm, make it smaller
- that huge helium escape valve
- the bracelet design
Yeah I was really considering buying this SMP 300 as a beater watch so I don't scratch up my Submariner at work but the bracelet and the helium escape valve made me choose a Tudor Pelagos instead. If they ever make a version without that obnoxious helium valve they would easily sell double the Seamasters.
I don't get why folks are upset about the HEV. It's ridiculous, but it looks purposeful.
@@HarryStoneDotCom because it's something that you'd never use and it's so big and sticks out like a sore thumb
The bracelet looks like it's from the 90's to me. I heard it's comfy, but it looks dated; also, there is no taper to the bracelet, it doesn't make it seem as elegant as a Submariner. Yes, it needs to be a bit smaller.
Bracelet is hideous
I’ll refrain from locking myself in a bathroom and trying to decipher the time while waiting for the lume on the hour/minute hand to dissipate.
I think Paul Thorpe discussed this last week. But I might be wrong.
