Kudos to LEGO diving extra deep into the EU novels for an Uglies set. I'd like to see more like this for kids to learn about the wonderful world of kitbashing.
I love this set. Star Wars Legends has a bunch of things like this where rebels or pirates or what have you would make their own ships from parts of other ships they had available to them. They're called Uglies. My favourites always included Y wings, so would be really cool if they continue this series and make some other easy to mash together ships.
I think both ships look great, especially the X-Wing; I particularly like how the designer aimed for the hexagon shape the body is supposed to have. I also appreciate how they went with the latest Tie-bomber's technique for the eye ball in the Tie fighter, although I would have preferred a rounder piece for its bottom and the missiles located as always had been before. The transformation/combination feature is also quite nice, I love to see references to the EU still happening to this day, but 110 dollars still seems too much to me for this set.
The last Tie and X-wing were $45 and $50 dollars respectively. Because of Lego's recent price increase, that extra $15 is somewhat reasonable, despite it having two less minifigs
Having spent hours looking at models and blueprints for a model, the shaping on that X-wing is sooo nice. The canopy is too big at that scale though, but they already made the piece 🤷♀️
$110 is crazy. More pieces than the last 2 play scale models, but they look smaller. Lego keeps making things smaller, but puts up higher piece counts to justify the price.
To be fair to Lego, a lot of these small pieces are there because there's no reason to make larger specialized part to replace them. Building techniques and structural integrity keeps improving, but they require more parts. For the most part Lego isn't trying to rip anyone off by using small parts. They can and do so without such roundabout ways, so I don't really agree this time
One additional play feature with the wing swap is easily reversible ship destruction! It always loved the old tie fighters as a kid cause the wings were just on pins, and it’s a genius move with the movie coming out. This set is probably gonna sell incredibly well.
It's a cool toy to have just to have it, and a good addition for collectors, but for practical purposes neither the new Xwing or TIE seems to offer much improvement on the recent play scale sets that went for USD 50-60, which adult collectors most lilely have already. As a kid's toy it's probably great though to get two decent builds in one box.
I honestly really like the look of these as just their regular unconfined versions. I think these are some of the best play-scaled X-wings and Tie fighters we’ve ever gotten. They look mostly proportional and to scale with minifigures while still being small enough that a kid could actually pick it up and swoosh it around. I also like that it’s basically to scale with the E-Wing and Shin Hati’s fighter set (even though Shin’s fighter wasn’t really to scale with the E-Wing in that set). But that X-Wing would look great next to the E-Wing, and their colorful astromechs would also be pretty fun to see together
For me this set and the dark falcon are a must. I love the shaping of that X-Wing, just looks so good to me. I skipped the last Falcon because I had two previous models even though the last one finally did away with the gaps. So now I feel less guilty about getting the dark one because it’s something different. Love these new Star Wars sets personally.
I hope this sells well enough to encourage more sets like it. I love this dive into a more creative side of the star wars theme, a nice break from the overbloat of display sets.
That TIE looks much better than the recent "chibi" version. Also, new way to do the front canopy. I need it for the building technique, to improve my TIE MOCs. Also liking the X-Wing, especially the slopped sides of the forward fuselage.
You mentioned dual molding the spring loaded bolts and how it wouldn't work, I'm with you on that, but they could get around that by putting a stud on the tip. I know why they probably didn't do that, probably because it would affect the flight of the bolts too much. But even still, that would make the shooters more in line with the system and give MOC builders more options.
I think these are perhaps the best play scale versions of both of these ships in a long while - even ignoring the swap/mash up feature. I'm tempted just to have smaller versions of the X-wing and TIE fighter to go with my MIDI ships. The TIE fuselage with X-wings reminds me of a Babylon 5 fighter
I've always loved the Star Wars Uglies so much I hope we get a companion set with a Y-wing and another ship, maybe a Tie Interceptor, that's backwards compatible with this set so we can mix it all up A Tie fuselage with an X-wing right and a Y-wing left. A Y-wing with a generic Tie panel on one side and Interceptor on the other. An X-wing with the stock foils on one side and a Y-wing engine on the other. So many options
Lego Chir'daki! I think it might've been nice to have a Y-wing compatible with this setup too, since those crossovers were pretty well-known in the EU lore. I also like seeing X-wings leave the rubber bands behind, they're terrible for longevity of the set. A geared system is much better.
I remember seeing these in one of my old visual encyclopedias. I can't personally think of much from the original EU that I'd want them to make a set of.
I’m excited for this just for the X-wing. Proportions aren’t perfect but the shape is fantastic, this might be my favorite system scale X-wing since the OG.
These are both legends vehicles and the tie cockpit/x foils is specifically a twi'lek fighter called the deathseed that was produced by and for their rebellion
I may be wrong, but I think the X-Wing can rest normally with TIE wings because the front landing gear is so long. However I dislike that in order for anyone to get a new X-Wing or TIE now, they need to buy BOTH. Not great for kids, or those who only like one.
The main thing I don't like (besides the minifigs; I'd rather they not be OCs on a classic fighter 2-pack) is where the hinges on the S-Foils are located. The shaping on the new X-Wing in general does a lot right, but the swap play feature necessitated they make the thrusters themselves the joint, so it looks really weird when in attack formation. I'm not too bothered by the fact the mechanism isn't synchronized, having them use normal independent hinges is fine, it's just that the iconography of an attacking X-Wing was compromised for the gimmick of the extremely short shelf life animated special.
Yeah, the X-Wing looks _fantastic_ with the S-foils closed, but I'm surprised I haven't seen more people talking about how it looks with them open. The gimmick is kinda fun, and I understand why it necessitates the S-foils to move there, but man it just ruins the whole look for me in attack mode.
I like the X-wing and the TIE is OK. Hopefully these ships scale good with the last, scaled down Xwing and TIE. If so I will pick this up once it hits the 20% discount.
i wonder why they didn’t add any details for the engine intakes on the x-wing. printed tile with the details. the x-wing looks really good regardless. the tie is good but the cockpit looks off with the smooth round pieces
Its a neat set but i already have both these vehicles I try to collect all astromech droids tho and i really want this one, hope to be able to buy it seperately from someone at a reasonable price
Something bothered me about the x-wing for a while and I couldn't quite put my finger on it until now, and it's the way the wings open. When x-wing wings open, the engines should have a gap between them and they don't, and it bothers me more than it should
This set just seems so bizarre to me. "Hey, let's do something wacky and mix two vehicles together!" It's like someone at Lego finally realized how Lego elements are used outside of licensed products that are built and never touched and decided to let the rest of the world know too, "Lego pieces are interchangeable? Like the Micronauts? Wow, man."
See it's funny because I think the Tie with X-wings looks goofy and doesn't work, but the X-Wing with Tie foils looks a bit like the A-wing and I vibe with it! haha In general tho I mainly see this set as an opportunity to just get 2 iconic Star Wars vehicles at a slightly smaller scale in a singular pack.
My only issue with this isn't the set itself, or the gimmicks or even the price; it's more the timing than anything. The last two versions of these ships were great and is a shame they were retired, but it feels so odd to bring them both back again so soon. In terms of price, this is a little more than the 2021 versions of these ships put together when they released that year and 2023 when they retired; even with inflation taken into account, the total difference is small due between 2021 and 2023 due to the TIE Fighter getting a price increase halfway through its shelf life. And the difference between those two sets together and the new set is still quite small. The 2021 sets had a total of 906 pieces with seven figures vs 1,068 pieces and 5 figures for this new double pack; I'm not quite sure where the extra 162 pieces are going in the new set, aside from the angled sides of the nose and the landing gears of the X-wing. I suspect it's inside for structural strength maybe? Either way, this is still very interesting and look even better than before, a little annoying they're bundled together this time although that's no surprise as that's where Lego is going with the size of these ships these days.
So this is pretty funny, but this is actually from a very old comic. The were remaking ships because they were low on parts. And they mixed them up like this lol.
Such a shame the TIE-fighter looks so strange. Was looking forward to a new one. The round and smooth TIE-bomber cockpit front look doesn't work at all with the blocky back. But I think it'd be great if they maybe made a new TIE-striker with this cockpit look. Would definitelly work much better with them being able to make it more round and smooth like the bomber.
I have mixed feeling about this set. On one hand, I think that the mix and match gimmick is dumb in a fun way, but on the other hand, the feature seems extra costly on the build quality. I don't like the fact that the x wing turbines are stuck together, since it breaks the very foundation of what the s foils are supposed to be. The nose shape is decent though, even if it needs a few more studs to be great. The figures are meh, the most appealing being x wing random pilot and lego droid. I couldn't care less about Gary Griebling and Mary Scala, even though I'm a sucker for this type of puns. The last tie and x wing were disapointing and these two are somewhat even worse. I get that pricing out kids on basic stuff like Tie and X wing isn't very nice , so compromises have to be made, but I would pick the 2018 Tie and X wing over this any day. I can see myself picking it up for like 60€, maybe 75 on hard discount but I'll probably just skip it.
Kudos to LEGO diving extra deep into the EU novels for an Uglies set.
I'd like to see more like this for kids to learn about the wonderful world of kitbashing.
Lego already did Uglies in The Freemaker Adventures
I love this set. Star Wars Legends has a bunch of things like this where rebels or pirates or what have you would make their own ships from parts of other ships they had available to them. They're called Uglies. My favourites always included Y wings, so would be really cool if they continue this series and make some other easy to mash together ships.
yup id love to see a y wing with bomber wings, or with Darth vaders wings
They did Uglies in Lego Star Wars The Freemaker Adventures too
I’m glad it’s not a y-tie those were death traps lol
That X wing looks absolutely proper! I love that they've finally captures the hull shape of the universe model

The last Tie and X-wing were $45 and $50 dollars respectively. Because of Lego's recent price increase, that extra $15 is somewhat reasonable, despite it having two less minifigs
If Lego original Star Wars media means more obscure stuff from the old EU being released by Lego, then I'm all for it
They have done Uglies before in The Freemaker Adventures and that was after the old EU became Legends

I swear I've seen Xwing with tie wings from one of those SW legends google search back in 2000s. It's absolutely ridiculous and I love it
It's a cool toy to have just to have it, and a good addition for collectors, but for practical purposes neither the new Xwing or TIE seems to offer much improvement on the recent play scale sets that went for USD 50-60, which adult collectors most lilely have already. I need the TIE with X wings! Imho looks way better than either of the original designs.
I honestly really like the look of these as just their regular unconfined versions. I think these are some of the best play-scaled X-wings and Tie fighters we’ve ever gotten. The funniest part about this whole thing is that LEGO indirectly made a Legends set.
ooh Lego Legends Uglies
That’s the best shaping on an x-wing that we’ve ever had.
Thank you, Jang for this review
Great video. This set actually looks really cool and fun! Excited to hear what you have to say about it once it's out.
Very interested in these new designs, and Jang's thoughts on them. Looking forward to the review!
Lego and Star Wars having some dumb fun is something I’m very on board for!
Honestly I love the look of this set, definitely an idea I would have loved as a kid!
This is pretty great. Really inspires you to make custom versions of everything else... Y-Wing, TIE Interceptor, TIE Advanced, etc. etc.
Gotta love the McDonald's looking Droid that is also Lego logo colors, named L3-G0, making a fun droid
It's crazy that I love this look of the TIE Fighter and X-Wing more because they look like small Lego toys!? And not super correct models!? XD
These look awesome great preview jang 👍
That TIE looks much better than the recent "chibi" version. Also, new way to do the front canopy. I need it for the building technique, to improve my TIE MOCs.
Also liking the X-Wing, especially the slopped sides of the forward fuselage.
Hooray!! It is now Jang Offical!!!
I like the regular x-wing and tie fighter. The fact they can attach to each other is cursed though
The only reason the tie fighter has the spring loaded shooters between the panels is so when u swap the wings and panels both ships can still shoot
if this idea will work and will sell good I see y-wing and maybe interceptor mash up next year
I loved Jang's reaction to the red and green missiles
I think these are perhaps the best play scale versions of both of these ships in a long while - even ignoring the swap/mash up feature. I'm tempted just to have smaller versions of the X-wing and TIE fighter to go with my MIDI ships. The TIE fuselage with X-wings reminds me of a Babylon 5 fighter
I can see someone making the Tie wings being able to "unfold" making the X shape, while being in the X-wing cabine, that would be fun
I've always loved the Star Wars Uglies so much
I hope we get a companion set with a Y-wing and another ship, maybe a Tie Interceptor, that's backwards compatible with this set so we can mix it all up
A Tie fuselage with an X-wing right and a Y-wing left. A Y-wing with a generic Tie panel on one side and Interceptor on the other. An X-wing with the stock foils on one side and a Y-wing engine on the other. So many options
It’s a solid “maybe” or even “wait for a sale” set to me 😊
Lego Chir'daki! I think it might've been nice to have a Y-wing compatible with this setup too, since those crossovers were pretty well-known in the EU lore. I also like seeing X-wings leave the rubber bands behind, they're terrible for longevity of the set. A geared system is much better.

i think its a bit pricey but a great set, two very good play models and a fun gimmick, if i was a kid, id love this set.
Love that astromech, can’t wait to add it to my astromech collection 😊
IMO the second green set of shooters were added so both sets of wings had shooty bits on them for when you switch it up.
I really wanna see a cool MOC of a X-Interceptor!
They don’t have to do dual-molded, if they just print on the tip, if that’s possible.
Jang seems to like this more than the dark falcon! may influence me to change my priority list
Freemaker adventures live on through this.
I like that they put the spring loaded shooters IN the Tie Wings so that both ships have shooters
I like the x-wing with tie panels! Some V-wing in there. Cool idea but no engines
I may be wrong, but I think the X-Wing can rest normally with TIE wings because the front landing gear is so long.
However I dislike that in order for anyone to get a new X-Wing or TIE now, they need to buy BOTH. Not great for kids, or those who only like one.

It’s just weird that the really good xwing and tie that were most recently on the market were discontinued for this
Both the red and green will shoot. Purpose being so when the wings are switched the x-wing (body) will have guns.
I like the X-wing and the TIE is OK. Hopefully these ships scale good with the last, scaled down Xwing and TIE. If so I will pick this up once it hits the 20% discount.
Lego Force Builder vibes 👌
I love this set, I don’t have an x wing or a tie fighter so I will be able to get both
I find it hilarious and love this idea 😂
yes, more please!
More money and less figures than the last two when combined.
Rotating the Tie wings on the X would make it look much better
The TIE-Wing!
I've wanted to see star wars Ugly ships get made into sets
I love it already
Swappable Lego builds have a long history! Silly and fun
what on earth are those supporting bricks? thats super strange i dont remember lego doing anything like that before
i wonder why they didn’t add any details for the engine intakes on the x-wing. printed tile with the details. the x-wing looks really good regardless. the tie is good but the cockpit looks off with the smooth round pieces
The X-Wing body with TIE wings would look a lot better imo if you could rotate the wings 90 degrees.
Its a neat set but i already have both these vehicles
I try to collect all astromech droids tho and i really want this one, hope to be able to buy it seperately from someone at a reasonable price
Something bothered me about the x-wing for a while and I couldn't quite put my finger on it until now, and it's the way the wings open. When x-wing wings open, the engines should have a gap between them and they don't, and it bothers me more than it should
Not too keep on the chunky wings on the X-Wing but nice set overall
This is awesome! I want this!
Awesome
This set just seems so bizarre to me. "Hey, let's do something wacky and mix two vehicles together!" It's like someone at Lego finally realized how Lego elements are used outside of licensed products that are built and never touched and decided to let the rest of the world know too, "Lego pieces are interchangeable? Tie body and X wing is close to legends Tie-hunter. I can see a lot of people using kit to make Tie hunterr
My reaction in the first second, as I saw, the set then the price:
"oOoo-aww"
I'm the opposite I like the x-wing with the tie fighter wings. Looks really cool to me.
See it's funny because I think the Tie with X-wings looks goofy and doesn't work, but the X-Wing with Tie foils looks a bit like the A-wing and I vibe with it! haha
In general tho I mainly see this set as an opportunity to just get 2 iconic Star Wars vehicles at a slightly smaller scale in a singular pack.
Hmmm... the "play scale" models are all just a bit too big for regular display. Would much prefer these around 1:150 scale 😅
My only issue with this isn't the set itself, or the gimmicks or even the price; it's more the timing than anything. The last two versions of these ships were great and is a shame they were retired, but it feels so odd to bring them both back again so soon.

Next mash up - R2 and 3PO.
Jang, I totally thought that R2 droid looked like the McDonald's droid also. I am not a fan of that theme either.
Now do an Obi Wan landspeeder with AT-AT legs
For kids this set is perfect!🤩 But not for a collector like me haha 😅
Is that a McAstromech?
Worst is the dark grey ball joint on the tie-front
So this is pretty funny, but this is actually from a very old comic. The were remaking ships because they were low on parts. And they mixed them up like this lol.
It's MC-D2!!!
The best X Wing of all time in this silly wing swap set? Crazy
Well, they call those things 'Uglies' in the expanded universe, so looking terrible might be a feature😅
Thank you for your thoughts on this set.
Lol mc. Donald R2D2
Base on ads that mean we will get another phase 1 clone troopers and rebel AT-AT too
The X-wing body with the Tie Fighter wings doesn't seem to have an engine.
Tie is the weak link here but that X Wing looks 👨🍳 💋
I don’t think the X-wing S-foils have an opening mechanism.
Then it’s time we combine the body of the new x wing with the mechanism of the previous, hopefully making the best of both worlds
Fun fact: these ships actualy appeared in star wars comics
I can see myself picking it up for like 60€, maybe 75 on hard discount but I'll probably just skip it.
ima call that the Bow-tie...
$110 is crazy!!
TIE fighter is meh, but I love that xwing, I’d get it if it was a separate set
The Tie body with the X-Wings has 6 engines but the X-Wing body and Tie Wings has none. 😅
It just occurred to me that the X-wing-with-TIE-wings technically doesn't have an engine. 😅
