Just bought Maverick 88 with 18 inch barrel. Buying some ammo from Lucky Gunner soon. I greatly enjoy your videos , best shotgun videos on the tube. Thank you guys.
From my experience with lights, using a surefire for end dedicated light would be a better choice than adding a separate light to the forend. Reason being, if you have ever shot a 12 gauge with a light as close to the forend like shown in this video, the recoil will make that rack come back and dig the light in to your hand, which is painful. I've done it to myself more than once when I practiced at the range, bought a surefire dsf and never had that trouble again. Just my .02

I'm enjoying the shotgun videos immensely. I was kinda afraid of picking up a shotgun because I'm not a huge dude, and I'm intimidated by the 12 gauge recoil. But... you don't look like a huge dude either so you give me confidence. And the clue about adding a shorter stock. So I picked up a Mossberg 590, put a 12" Hogue stock on it, and I'm ready for my first trip to the range! (I've been shooting for about 35 years, so not my FIRST trip to the range, just my first SHOTGUN trip to the range.) :-)
The most devastating single shot wound I ever witnessed was a head shot at about 25, or so feet delivered via. a 12 ga. 00 Buckshot load. Hence my personal choice in a home defensive weapon.
i would love to do this to an 870 but i don't have the money. i believe in a home defense gun. but i also believe my stock 870 or my stock a300 can defend my home just as well as any other gun can.
Levi Cooper you are absolutely correct, a stock shotgun will work just as well as upgraded one. The upgrades just increase efficiency. Like Lucky Gunner said most events are over on 2-3 rounds.
IProtec for a mag.tube clamp for up to a one inch diameter white light and a pic rail for an IProtec laser with remote pressure switch all can be had for around 100 bucks maybe a tad more.
What are your thoughts on the aguila 12 gauge mini 1" shells? Easy way to double your ammo capacity, IF they cycle properly. Would love to see you do a short video on them and how to make sure they cycle properly in your HD shotgun!
+Lynn Mckenney I have not tried the Aguila mini shells, but I've tried the Nobel Sport mini buckshot. They cycled okay in the 870, but the spread at just 7 yards was 12 inches. Unacceptable for home defense when you are accountable for the final destination of all of those pellets. I have been planning to check out the Aguila shells and see if they pattern any better.
I have the same setup. I need to get a light on there. The included screws scrapped on my barrel. I wasn't sure if that's a extra kit or what screw you used? Finally someone on here that realizes more stuff = more weight/ problems!
+Jake Norden Both have a very good track record for stopping attackers with a single upper torso shot. Two in some rare instances. Slugs typically have more recoil and tend to over penetrate, so buckshot is preferred for home-defense. Slugs are better when you need to reach past 25-35 yards, which is more relevant for hunting than for personal protection.
I love your videos. I am trying to refine my home shotgun defense. Your videos have been extremely helpful! I have a Mossberg that I bought with a pistol grip at a gun show, Merica! I'm trying to refine it into a home defense weapon. I love the look of the Magpul furniture on your gun. My barrel and magazine are a a bit long for my liking but I'm off on the right track. I subscribed to see more good shotgun stuff.... since I can't just afford an AR platform to protect my homestead.
Just sold a Winchester and Mossberg home defense shot guns and picked up a Berreta 1301 now getting use to the semi auto shotgun. Not hot on the idea of a light our house has decent light at night. Good video'
Also, for number 6, using a flashlight that has strobe mode is very useful to visually impair your assailants, especially if they're armed with guns as well.
Nicholas Gonzalez I would use it then my AR 15 it’s easy to remember what to do o shoot a lot with the AR but I still forgot what to do next that why o would grab my shotgun first
You really only need one thing... a suppressor. No one mentions how deafening and disorienting it will be when you let loose that short barrel 12 gauge indoors in a small bedroom hallway, where ALL of that pressure is bounced right back at you. *mawp... mawp* If you can't own a suppressor, get something like a SU22, so that you can at least minimize the permanent hearing damage you're about to inflict on yourself.
The Maverick 88 in either the youth 20 gauge or 12 guage. Even the full size with a youth stock is great. 8 rounds of 12 gauge buckshot with a tac light and 5 more on the stock does well.
I like my dog, but the guilt I would feel if I accidentally shot him would pale in comparison to the pain and psychological torture I would endure if I accidentally shot one of my kids. I understand the sentiment, but I prefer to make a distinction there. I'm not a big fan of slings on home defense guns. First, you probably shouldn't be carrying it anywhere because you shouldn't be trying to clear your own house, especially not with a long gun. The shotgun is a "bunker defense" weapon when you can safely stay in one spot and engage an attacker only if they come to you. If you must move around the house, turn on lights, open doors, etc, a handgun is a better tool. But even if you were to be mobile in the home with a shotgun, the sling is going to be more of a hindrance than a help. It would really suck if you were trying to check out a bump in the night end you end up getting disarmed by a doorknob that snagged your sling.
I have a 6 way adjustable stock on my Remington 870 but I keep, going back to my Winchester 1300 defender speed pump mounted a light and a side saddle to it holds 7 +1 and is fun to shoot
Have a Saiga 12 with a Pheonix Technologies recoil reducing stock, polished internals, gas port job and a 12 round mini drum, will let it sit for months, dusty and everything, and will fire it cold without any lube or cycling the action. Fires everytime, will run the cheap Walmart stuff, pretty sure it will run the OO buck in it. What do you think of my setup?
The mag fed semi-autos tend to be very temperamental. I'm sure yours works fine for now, but it is almost guaranteed to start having reliability issues long before you would see problems in a quality tube-fed shotgun.
I messed around with the placement of my shotgun light (TLR RM2 on a 590a1). While the 3 or 9 o'clock position is great ergonomically. I got a lot of shadowing. Since the light sits back a ways from the end of the barrel. I ended up going with my light in the 6 clock position. Not quite as ergo friendly. But I got a much better throw from the light and a lot less shadowing.
I had an old 50 round bandolier laying around. I cut that thing down to 10 groups of 5. I went out and bought a roll of velcro. I glued that to the back of the bandolier. I even put a few pop rivets in just to make sure that it didn't separate. I then put some velcro on the side of my mossberg 500, works great. They have lasted over 3 years. None have gotten loose. It is a piece of cake to drop a couple packs of shotgun shells into my side pocket.
Personally I prefer a few kilowatts of CO2 laser, as that's more practically available. Just reconfigure the guts of a laser cutter and add a long extension cord or Li-Ion backpack.
Australian Eugenics Expert As much as I really don’t want to get into a debate about guns in the US... I feel like alarm systems act more as a deterrent than an actual line of defense. You’re right that a criminal can and has done that. But it’s most likely to scare away dumb criminals and you’re left with the smart ones breaking in. Smart criminals are going to plan out when you’re not home and break in then. A shotgun really has no benefit there. Sometimes yes. Someone will be dumb enough to break in with an alarm system while you’re home. That’s extremely unlikely from my experience and at some point it’s better to accept the loss and have nobody hurt or killed than to pop em’ in the head or chest at short range. But you know shotguns are nice for other uses so I’m not saying no to having one for fun and keeping it for home safety also.
Still very interested in the SRM1216. Compacted, 16 rounds, rotary magazine, so legal in many states, and who could afford one-said to be a reliable AR style receiver.
So, bear in mind that I'm an AR guy, whose first gun was an issued M4A1, but an 18" barrel on a 590A1 still seems waaaaay too long. It's pretty awkward to get through the doorways and around the corners of my house, impossible to do without dropping the muzzle or taking the butt out of my shoulder pocket in fact, and shortening the LOP with a different stock doesn't seem like it'll help much. Think I should switch to an SBS or a Shockwave-style blaster?
The only qualm I have is the sight. I am much faster with a bead, I can make very good fast hits with slugs at 50yd, and solid hits at 100yds, both much much further than any distance in any house I have been in.
+Moto Rad Not everyone has great eyesight. When you get older your eye sight deteriorates, consequently a sight upgrade is really necessary. I can't use the bead sights anymore, so I am switching over to red dot sights and I love them.
Also have you ever tried shooting that way in very low light? That bead can get really hard to see way out there. Also there is a reason the military is going to optics. Those reasons apply to rifles and shotguns equally.
Richard Lamoreaux That is a good consideration. I have never shot slugs in low light. I would prefer a red dot probably, but I don't think I would benefit at all in that case from ghost rings. While optics would provide a benefit, ghost rings would not (for me).
That's a terrific and simple solution to mounting a light on the forend. I'm embarrassed to show how mine's mounted. Do you still use the Streamlight pistol light for your home defense shotgun build?
Good info. Sounds Iike I've got my bases covered pretty good with my Remington 870 tactical magpul express. 6+1, streamlight tlr1s, mesa tactical 6 round side saddle. I learned not to keep it fully loaded all the time, my magazine spring lost alot of tension. Just ordered a heavy duty spring and will only load it with 7 before bed and keep 5 loaded otherwise.
+westmichile88 I can only relate my own experience but after keeping it fully loaded for months the spring lost all its tension. Used to be when I'd unscrew the mag cap the spring would fly out. After several months I'd unscrew the cap and the spring didn't move. Replaced it with a wolff heavy duty spring. It's all moot now because I'm keeping an m and p sport 2 ar 15 by my bed at night. After doing alot of research I discovered that the 00 buck pellets from a 12 gauge will over penetrate more than .223 hp from an ar. Plus it's much lighter to handle and I have 30 rounds instead of 7.
+srg914 I think Mike lamb recommends #4 buck for home in regards to over penetration. One could say it delivers enough penetration to get the job done without being too insignificant. If a shell can't penetrate a wall at house distance, might be questionable whether that'll get the job done.
My busnell red dot on my 12 gauge has held up beautifully and still holds zero I've dropped it on hard surfaces(accidentally) numerous times and it continues to impress me.
+Visitor It's a gimmick and a range toy. Not proven to be reliable or rugged enough to trust as a life saving tool. The added capacity is completely superfluous for a home defense role, so it offers no real benefit over a conventional shotgun with a single tube but makes the gun more mechanically complicated and susceptible to malfunctions (you will be hard pressed to find any instance of a home invasion stopped with a shotgun where more than 4-5 shots were required. 1-2 shots if it was loaded with buckshot and actually hit the target). The bullpup configuration may have some advantages, but not worth the trade-off for trusting your life to a gun from a company with chronic quality control problems. There are few legitimate reasons to stray very far from the Remington or Mossberg pumps or Beretta or Benelli semi-autos. The biggest weakness of the traditional pump shotguns is user-induced malfunctions, and the Kel-Tec doesn't offer any solutions to that. Most of the same could be said of the UTS-15 and any of the other gimmicky shotgun designs.
Lucky Gunner Ammo Hey you used to have some vids on the 1301, did you take them down, I was considering getting one and was going rewatch those vids. thanks.
I HAVE A Remington 870 pistol grip and same has the forend and it measures 2 feet total of course I had to cut the barrel it’s very lightweight and easy to shoot,
All good points and I have a Remington 870 done up about just like this but the down side is it adds weight and affects handling I think for home defense where the gun is going to be used at close range and most likely quickly how it handles is more important I keep the 870 now in the gun safe and have an old Remington model 31 with a 18 inch barrel next to the bed Light with a superb action.
My shotgun checklist Short barrel. ✔ 18 inches Short stock. ✔ kinda. It's short enough Extanded mag X, also disagree. Most burgerlys don't consist of more than 1 or 2 people mag carrier ✔ cheap on amazon upgraded sights X I don't have a gunsmith Light X but i am looking at a pikitinny rail mount to attach a light
Most burglaries don't, some do, and if you're unlucky enough to have that, or, alternatively, you miss, having more rounds. The entire point of the gun is to prepare for the worst case scenario, because if you have to pull a gun in the first place, it's already a pretty bad situation. It also gives you more room to fire warning shots if you deem that a good course of action.
My 870 has a plug in the tube that makes it to where if I need to use it for hunting I can only load 3 shells but if i need it for home defense I can load up to 5 or 6. Most hunting shotguns come with the option to take the plug out of the tube
The problem with having a Tomahawk missile and no shotgun is that sometimes the threat is already in your home. You won’t always have time to arm and fire the missile, even if you have the coordinates pre-set to obliterate your front door or your couch.
I just got a top folding stock for my 500... after I put it on, I realized I made the weapon less lethal (for melee purposes of course). Also more difficult to reach the safety. I'll just keep it for the range I suppose.
my bed room has what I call an airlock between the door and the living room which takes around 3 seconds to run across so I have two ammo tins tied together, if someone walks through, they'll knock them other so i have some time to reach my hi power and aim. by the time the person comes in, my eyes have already adjusted to the lighting conditions well enough to aim without squinting
I don't get putting ghost ring sights on a shotgun for home defense. It reduces your field of vision. You can shoot slugs to 50 yards easy with a bead sight
What do you and the everyone else think of Federals 16 pellet standard 2 3/4 inch loads of #1 Buck for home defense? I like the increase in pellets personally and live in a fairly small 2 bedroom brick home by myself.
@@judsongaiden9878 Aye! Keep searching or haggle with your gun dealer. I've shopped with the same people for years so they know I'm not going to leave with a new toy without haggling.
3 things, 1st is in home defense the sling just gets in the way, its a usually a short and quick situation, 2nd is weight, especially if it carries many rounds and u keep it full. I have one and I actually don't prefer it unless its like the apocalypse or something. If you start firing rapidly, especially a pump gun, it starts swinging uncontrollably making it impossible to stay on target. And 3rd its totally unstable and nearly impossible to reload quickly from in a fire fight. Really its only benefit is long term, long distance storage slung on your shoulder, like a hiking backpack would be.
@@bufordtjustice8630 fair advice, I originally grabbed a sling that held 4 extra shells because I keep it in my camper in the woods as much as my home.
Something i think is paramount is active hearing protection. 12g is loud as hell but I still want to be able to hear after I have to shoot to confirm if there's another threat
So, just a recap:
1: Short barrel (18-20”)
2: Short stock (12-13” for proper mounting)
3: Mag extension (5-6 rounds in the gun)
4: Spare ammo (side saddle or stock carrier)
5: Sight upgrade (although not essential)
6: Mounted light (for obvious reasons)

The most devastating single shot wound I ever witnessed was a head shot at about 25, or so feet delivered via. a 12 ga. 00 Buckshot load. Hence my personal choice in a home defensive weapon.
I have a Winchester 1300 defender with wood and I sawed off a couple inches of the stock and put on a limbsaver pad. Works like a charm!
i would love to do this to an 870 but i don't have the money. i believe in a home defense gun. but i also believe my stock 870 or my stock a300 can defend my home just as well as any other gun can.
Levi Cooper you are absolutely correct, a stock shotgun will work just as well as upgraded one. The upgrades just increase efficiency. Like Lucky Gunner said most events are over on 2-3 rounds.
@cjhyde78 Can't you just look at gunbroker? They seem to offer plenty of police models.
I can use my stock 870 for anything. When you start adding on and taking away you limit the usefulness to just home defense.

Finally someone on here that realizes more stuff = more weight/ problems!
Which delivers more stopping power? Slugs or Buckshot?
+Jake Norden Both have a very good track record for stopping attackers with a single upper torso shot. Two in some rare instances. Slugs typically have more recoil and tend to over penetrate, so buckshot is preferred for home-defense. Slugs are better when you need to reach past 25-35 yards, which is more relevant for hunting than for personal protection.
Slugs but you may want the spread that you get with buckshot
Slugs hit harder, but they might hit too hard for defense. Buckshot hits hard enough for defense.
Use buck and ball

A big help in considering a first time home defense buy. Thank you!
Nicholas Gonzalez I would use it then my AR 15 it’s easy to remember what to do o shoot a lot with the AR but I still forgot what to do next that why o would grab my shotgun first
You need two lights and three lasers, fore grip, long range scope, magnifier and side sights too for that weapon to be fully effective.

Tw things:
1. Dogs are members of the family too
2. What about a sling?
Slings mean the world to me.
Or an RPG

1. You spelt two wrong

I have a 6 way adjustable stock on my Remington 870 but I keep, going back to my Winchester 1300 defender speed pump mounted a light and a side saddle to it holds 7 +1 and is fun to shoot
Could you put links for the products you used?
Wow, great video! Thanks for posting
Nice video.Well made, specific and useful info also.Keep up the good work.
I do like a 16" barrel. A plasma rifle in 40 watt range is much more effective though....
Personally I prefer a few kilowatts of CO2 laser, as that's more practically available. Just reconfigure the guts of a laser cutter and add a long extension cord or Li-Ion backpack.
I prefer an Uzi 9-millameetah
TheGuyWithTheSniper .45 caliber long slide with laser sighting.
Check out the SRM 1216. No spare ammo needed. 17 rounds without any motion except rotating the magazine a quarter turn.
I won’t need to know this cause I live in the uk but I’m watching it regardless
You won’t need this most places in the us if you have even the cheapest home security systems, but some people feel a need for it for whatever reason.
Australian Eugenics Expert
As much as I really don’t want to get into a debate about guns in the US...
@Australian Eugenics Expert If someone is bold enough to break into an occupied residence, I think that signals danger.
@Finn [Redacted] That's exactly the point. What if I'm there, what if I'm not? Better to have that extra security and not need it
@Finn [Redacted] In that case, I'm happy we agree
Still very interested in the SRM1216. Compacted, 16 rounds, rotary magazine, so legal in many states, and who could afford one-said to be a reliable AR style receiver.
So, Remington 870 or Mossberg 590a1?
time4tradin Mossberg. Just my personal preference because I like the ergonomics more. Both are equally reliable.
Get a Mossberg. Rustington quality control is ass nowadays. I hope you chose wisely
Mossberg, Remington has recently declared bankruptcy and their quality is going down the tubes.
Barry Justice That is a good point I have not considered. 20/20 spoils you.
50 yds and 100 yds is NOT Home Defence....you WILL go to Jail....
So, in other words, a KSG is a good home defense shotgun?
+Elijah Greenberg No.
care to explain why?
also what about UTS 15?

Awesome video! Great info and great delivery!
All good points and I have a Remington 870 done up about just like this but the down side is it adds weight and affects handling
I think for home defense where the gun is going to be used at close range and most likely quickly how it handles is more important
I keep the 870 now in the gun safe and have an old Remington model 31 with a 18 inch barrel next to the bed
Light with a superb action.
My dogs are members of my family, other than that, great video.
I have a shockwave. I do have a side saddle and light on it, but a stock shockwave pretty much checks all these boxes.

Short barrel. ✔ 18 inches
Short stock. ✔ kinda. It's short enough
Extanded mag X, also disagree. Most burgerlys don't consist of more than 1 or 2 people
mag carrier ✔ cheap on amazon
upgraded sights X I don't have a gunsmith
Light X but i am looking at a pikitinny rail mount to attach a light
Most burglaries don't, some do, and if you're unlucky enough to have that, or, alternatively, you miss, having more rounds. The entire point of the gun is to prepare for the worst case scenario, because if you have to pull a gun in the first place, it's already a pretty bad situation.
It also gives you more room to fire warning shots if you deem that a good course of action.
You don't need a rail to mount a light. There are plenty of clamps that attach to the tube
Magnum Dong I just use duct tape
@@rivec33 you monster
All of your points were perfect examples and good information. How do you feel about bullpups with or without box magazines? It's short and compact.
Basically any shotgun will be good for home defense, as long as it is compact and holds at least 5 shells.
I could not agree more... the Escort Aimguard is an excellent example at about $140
Thank you
My 870 has a plug in the tube that makes it to where if I need to use it for hunting I can only load 3 shells but if i need it for home defense I can load up to 5 or 6. Most hunting shotguns come with the option to take the plug out of the tube
Only plebs use shotguns only true home defense operators know that you need at least 1 CMB Tomohawk missle below your bed at all timed
TheLord OfNuggets it would make your case more plausible if you spelled missile correctly ;)
The problem with having a Tomahawk missile and no shotgun is that sometimes the threat is already in your home. You won’t always have time to arm and fire the missile, even if you have the coordinates pre-set to obliterate your front door or your couch.
Ha ha ha that a boy!
All you need is a flashbang and a tomahawk for home defense
"Put that TV down or I'll blow us all to bits!"
I like the VR60...it's relatively short and is mag fed with two 5 round mags as well as you can also acquire 9 round mags
I don't get putting ghost ring sights on a shotgun for home defense. It reduces your field of vision. You can shoot slugs to 50 yards easy with a bead sight
There's no need for sights. I used a shotgun with a ghost ring to shot clays total garbage.
Ghost rings are *supposedly* better for quickly aligning the bigger front sight on a Human sized target.

What's the opinion on using a sling that hold extra ammo? Other than reload speed I can't think of any other downsides.
