I'm in my 30s and adore ravelry and have used rav since 2011. I know it has its issues, but it's part pattern journal, part marketplace, part database, part message boards, and is exactly what I need. I also love looking in my pattern library and filtering with that. "I have a single skein of DK weight yarn, what can I make with that that I already have a pattern for?"
I love using the search function for different yarns, especially when I'm trying to how a color works up on a given project. Also -- if you find "friends," you can keep up with their projects, which is great.
I hope you can make rav work for you -- it's not "sexy" but it's PRACTICAL.

Oh I’m so glad! I was in the same boat so I was hoping it’d help someone who was curious❤️

Wow! I’ve also only heard about the controversies and stuff through Emma, so I had no idea there were so many useful tools on there! The stashing and project tracker elements are amazing, I’ve been using a bused notion page I made and spreadsheets when I could’ve been using this the whole time! Thank you for making this video, I never would’ve known otherwise!

I loved this video. The way you lit up when you found Ravelry things that interested you brought joy. I have been a Rav user since 2005. I had similar reactions to yours and similar hesitations. No regrets. I wish you many hours of happiness.

Your hair is SO GOOD omg!! Had to compliment it before saying anything else cos !!!
This video is incredibly useful. I've only used ravelry without an account for grabbing free patterns that were linked on reddit.
I have almost the opposite problem from you: zero yarn, but I want to get back into making practical things for my friends and myself. I'm worried about seeing a good deal and locking myself into making the same few things. Their search actually seems great for working on a tight budget, huh!
I've seen emma's videos about the history of ravelry (they're so good, Yarn Drama is wild lmao), and yet I know _nothing_ about how to actually use the site right. It's just. *So much.*
I get overwhelmed, and it seems like every time I click on something that sounds useful (besides free pattern downloads) it requires an account.
Nothing keeps me from making an account like gating things off - I'm really curious, and when a platform won't let me poke around it makes me think either they're hiding membership plans, the features aren't that good, or they're trying to encourage cliquishness. It feels like when you meet a new person and all they'll talk about is how great their church is, you should attend, they'll even pick you up...
The site as a whole got marked as "nope, not dealing with all that" in my brain.
I guess I just needed a walkthrough, lol.
    Tysm, great video 💜

Thank you so much for this! I couldn’t agree more, and this is PRECISELY why I wanted to make this video. If you make an account, I hope you enjoy! I genuinely find it so useful

Really a lot of the usefulness in ravelry is the patterns tab, in which you can search knitting/crochet patterns (like the yarns) and filter by category, fiber, yardage, even gauge or attributes like shawl collar, etc etc. I've been using ravelry for quite a long time and I very rarely use the yarns tab to find a pattern as I'd rather start with the pattern and filter by the things I need the pattern to do.
Also the home page is not particularly active. Designers are trying to get onto the front page of the Hot Right Now search which is patterns that people are looking at on ravelry right now. It changes as patterns are clicked on more or less.

Ohhhh got it got it that makes sense re: Hot Right Now. I was curious what the hype was about- I have to check that out!
