For those considering a vegan lifestyle because you’re a compassionate person but don't really know where to start? No worries, I’ve got your back. Figuring out what to eat after ditching meat and dairy can be a total maze, even if you weren’t that picky about your diet before.
If you’re Indian, you’re already kinda used to a plant-based diet, so it’s mostly about swapping out dairy.
If you want to skip supporting the dairy industry and not blow your budget, start with a simple, low-cost meal plan that’s still super nutritious. Just collect all the healthy dishes you like, and we’ll go from there.
First up, let’s chat about two must-have nutrients: Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D3. If you’re not getting outside for at least 25-30 minutes a few times a week, you might end up with a Vitamin D3 deficiency. Even people who eat meat have a tough time getting enough Vitamin D from food alone-often less than 15 percent. So, either grab a supplement once a week or get outside more.
For Vitamin B12, you can go for shots (I do this every other month) or take a pill once a week. It’s safe and natural. Just be careful with fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamin D-better to check in with your doc for the right dose. B12 is usually fine, though. You could also take a multivitamin like Axbex or Zincovit-just pop one, and you’re set. This is clutch for busy folks like pre-med students or anyone with a hectic schedule.
Here’s the food that works for us at home-these are our go-to staples.
    Protein sources-
    Chickpeas
Soy chunks (this is cheap and healthy..and has anti cancer properties..well anything soy has anti cancer properties except for soy bean oil)
    Tofu
    Soybean
Beans like kidney beans or mung bean
    Lentils (a mix of lentils)
Quinoa (quinoa is cheap.. and very healthy..)
Amaranth (i buy muesli from peepal farm)
Millets (Indians love millet..these are not particularly high in protein but they're amazing)
Chia seeds (not just protein but amazing fats as well...but be sure to soak em)
Flax seeds (these are literally superfoods..)
    Green peas
Hemp seeds (we don't use it but they're really good)
Tempeh (i don't have access to these but again ... they're so good)
Legumes or Pulses in general are so good for you..
Nuts and seeds (amazing protein and fats .)
    Greens -
    Cabbage/cauliflower/brocoli/Brussel sprouts (if available)
Leafy greens like spinach or kale
    Beet root
    Carrots
    Cucumber
Amla (it's a fruit but they're the best. Period)
    Bell pepper 🫑
    Bitter gourd
And the list goes on and on..
Be sure to eat regional vegetabls cuz India is pretty diverse ...so eat your greens..and go local ...
    Peanut butter (peepal farm)
Try to incorporate more colour into your food ....or maybe give permaculture ... Or give permaculture a shot if you have the time..and space..
    Dishes i eat..
Dosa (this is my fave )
    Lentil curry with rice
    Rajma chawal
    Idli sambhar
Indian version of chilli (that has chickpeas , rajma , ground soy chunks , carrots , bell pepper, 🍅 tomatoes, etc)
    Yellow pea chat
    Litti chokha
    Soy bean biryani
Soy bean ki sabzi (i eat lil to no oil)
    Chana masala (chickpea curry)
Oat porridge with apples and bananas and chia seed on top
Indian version of chilli (that has soy chunks , Pinto beans or white rajma , chickpeas , bell pepper 🫑, carrots , onion and garlic 🧄, indian spices, some soy sauce, tomato puree..and a bunch of other healthy ingredient..this can double as bhaji for pav bhaji)
Quinoa oat cinnamon banana porridge without any milk.. you could add some chia or nuts of your choice..
Black mung daal seasoned with salt
South Indian style besan tofu sauted in curry leaves and mustard seeds with sauce..
Chola chana chaat with aloo ki tikki .. (we make it bland cuz we like it bland..)
    Flax seed and jaggery dumplings
    Red lentil uttapam
    Yellow pea chat
(Quinoa+daliya+millet+rice) mung bean khichdi with added veggies
    Daal
    Dhokla
    Pakal tofu paneer
    Mushroom biryani
Oat dense chocolate fudge cake (dessert 😁)
Mix veg soy bean sabzi (quite runny....pretty similar to a soup.. but very tasty.. i like bland stuff )
    High protein muesli ...
Tofu scramble (we eat homemade tofu.. )
Whole mung daal with lime juice squeezed on top and some diced onion..(with roti)
Quinoa raita with (peanuts+cabbage+carrot+apples) and other tempering
We use homemade soy yogurt because I’m not big on store-bought or convenience foods, unless I’m really starving.
These are the dishes I grew up with, so you might do things a bit differently. Make a list of essentials that work for you.
I make sure to eat at least two protein-rich dishes each day-like chana masala in the morning and khichdi for lunch or dinner.

Some people often have the perception that in order to be compassionate, you must either compromise your health or resort to costly vegan foods and supplements.
I wanted to clarify this notion because it can be challenging, particularly if you were raised with traditional remedies like chicken soup or, in my case, haldi doodh (turmeric milk) when you were unwell. Whenever I fell sick, my mother would bring me a cup of milk with turmeric, gently feeding me while I rested my head on her lap. The placebo effect likely facilitated the healing process. Even though my mother is a doctor, she continued to administer what she was given as a child, creating an emotional bond rather than mere pleasure. It’s about the quality time spent with someone who deeply cared for you.
I recognize that for others, it may be even more poignant if their mother, grandmother, or loved one provided them with comforting remedies like chicken soup. As one matures, the emotional connection often intensifies. At 17, I still subconsciously believe in the healing power of turmeric milk, especially as my mother continues to offer it to comfort me. Consequently, I drink soy milk with turmeric.
Despite my aversion to milk’s taste, which I found unpleasant, it was a source of solace during times of illness, akin to a comforting hug from my mother. To me, turmeric milk symbolizes a mother’s embrace, medicine, and assurance of recovery.
However, now when I encounter milk, I am reminded of the cows that are slaughtered for it, shifting my perspective significantly..
    So..
If you’re thinking about going vegan because you care about compassion but aren’t sure where to start, I’ve got you covered. It can be pretty confusing figuring out what to eat once you cut out meat and dairy, even if you didn’t really pay much attention to your diet before.
If you’re Indian, you’re already used to a plant-centered diet, so it’s mainly about replacing dairy.
If you want to avoid supporting the dairy industry and still keep costs low, you can start with a simple, budget-friendly, nutritious meal plan. Just gather all the healthy dishes you know, and we’ll go from there.
If you, as an Indian, want to avoid supporting the cruel dairy industry while not breaking the bank, you can start with a simple, low-budget, yet highly nutritious meal plan. Gather every dish you consider healthy, and then we’ll discuss the next steps.
But first, let’s talk about two essential nutrients: Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D3. If you don’t get outside for at least 25-30 minutes 3-4 times a week, you might suffer from Vitamin D3 deficiency. Even carnivores (those who eat a meat only diet) struggle to meet their Vitamin D requirements from food alone, often reaching less than 15 percent. Therefore, you should either supplement weekly or spend a bit more time in the sun.
Now, for Vitamin B12: you can either take shots (which I do every alternate month) or a pill once a week. This is both natural and safe. However, be cautious with fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamin D; it’s best to consult your doctor for the appropriate dosage. Vitamin B12 is generally safe, but you can also take multivitamins like Axbex or Zincovit-just pop one in, and you’re set for the day.
This is especially important for busy people, like pre-med students or those with hectic schedules.
Here’s the food that works for our household, as these are our staples.
    Protein sources-
    Chickpeas

If this can motivate you on days when you’re feeling down, I want to first thank you and let you know that you’ve inspired me to become vegan. I’ve been vegan for five months now and watch every video you upload. The way you answer each question so logically and back it with scientific proof is key. If someone had given me illogical reasons or blindly followed veganism without understanding it, I would never have accepted it. The points you raise make complete sense. You genuinely help people remove their blinders, and deep down, they realize that what they are doing is wrong.

Thanks for changing me. Your activism is really ushering change. I consumed dairy but after watching your videos I have become vegan. Initially tried to get tofu and nut milk but didn't like tofu at all and all nut milk was costly and laden with preservatives and chemicals. Then I got a nut milk maker at home and have very economic soya milk and other nut milk at home. Tofu I can't eat as a salad still but atleast my message to those who find nut milk expensive and with fillers please make it at home in blender or a lot more easily in a nut milk maker. Take vegan omega 3s from algae and b12 and d3 supplements. You will get a better health, my cholesterol levels have significantly dropped just from losing dairy. Love animals or atleast let them live in peace like you want to live yourself.

I want to say a few things here. I do find the concept of veganism intriguing and sometimes think towards making a part of life. But, then you see i feel like this should not be the focus of me or any individual right now. Slavery system became abolished due to growing peace around the world, reduction of wars, education and activism around the globe . Similarly, now our focus should be on stabilizing the peace , unity among different nations, growth in science and technology that can replace any cravings(meat and others) through wellfare alternatives. After that, we can move towards maintaining system with animals and plants.

Hence the carnivorus animals will enventually die because they are starving. So by doing that we are killing more animals right what are your opinions i want to improve myself just ignore the grammaticall errors cause i am a 10 standard student and i am vegetarian so i am trying to remove diary products from my life.

I'm impressed that you are thinking about issues like this at such a young age. Good for you! I'll try to address your concerns/questions. For most vegans, the immediate goal is to end human exploitation of animals. It sounds like you already understand that part. There are some vegans that think far into the future where we humans may have to technology to be able to end wild animal suffering too, but we don't have a solution for that today. Even though we cannot end all animal suffering today we should do what we can, and we can all stop exploiting animals for trivial reasons. I hope that makes sense. 🌱

    - 2 cups basmati rice
    - 500g chicken, cut into pieces
    - 2 onions, thinly sliced
    - 2 tomatoes, chopped
    - 1/2 cup plain yogurt
    - 4 cloves garlic, minced
    - 1-inch ginger, minced
    - 2 green chilies, chopped (optional)
    - 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
    - 1 teaspoon red chili powder
    - 1 teaspoon garam masala
    - 1 teaspoon ground coriander
    - 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
    - 4-5 cups water or chicken broth
    - Salt to taste
    - Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
    - Saffron strands soaked in warm milk (optional)
    ### For layering:
    - Fried onions
    - Chopped mint leaves
    - Chopped cilantro leaves
    - Saffron milk (optional)
    ### Instructions:
    1. Wash the rice and soak it in water for about 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
    2. In a large pot, heat some oil or ghee. Add the sliced onions and fry until golden brown. Remove half of the fried onions and set aside for layering.
    3. Add minced garlic, ginger, and green chilies to the remaining onions in the pot. Sauté for a few minutes.
    4. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they are soft and mushy.
    5. Add chicken pieces and cook until they are browned.
    6. Mix in yogurt and all the dry spices (turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, ground coriander, ground cumin, and salt). Cook for a few minutes until the spices are well combined.
    7. Add water or chicken broth and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, add the soaked rice and stir gently.
    8. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and cook on low heat for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice and chicken are fully cooked and all the liquid is absorbed.
    9. Once done, remove the pot from heat and let it sit covered for another 10 minutes.
    10. Before serving, fluff the biryani gently with a fork. Garnish with fried onions, chopped mint, cilantro leaves, and saffron milk if using.
    11. Serve hot with raita or your favorite side dish. Enjoy your homemade chicken biryani!

@@johnlove2954 🐕 dog meat is allowed in certain cultures like china, Thailand, etc..
Even in north-east India, 🇮🇳 INDIAN CITIZENS do eat dog meat.🥩
So, if certain food is part of culture in certain region of India, 🇮🇳 the Indian government allows it in that region despite what “HINDI” speaking Indians perceptions are…
Similarly, despite what Hindi speaking Indians think, Tamils will have JALLIKATTU, Karnataka will have kambala, Andhra & Telangana will have ongole bull race, Kerala will have elephants in temples processions.
Hindi people opinions don’t matter in south India & north east India.

Why it’s bakwas to tell everyone to go vegan ❌.
People in coastal areas (eg: mangalore), have saline soil… they can’t grow much veg food. For them what’s practical is fish 🐠
People in areas with heavy rainfall areas (western ghats), have damp soil… they can only grow rice, coconut, coffee, arecanut. For them fish 🐠 & pigs 🐖 are more easy to breed & eat.
People in desert areas (Arab), have water scarcity… they can’t grow any vegetables…for them sheep, 🐑 goats 🐐 meat is easy.
People in snowfall areas (Himalayas), for them meat from 🐐 , 🐑 , yak is easy
But people living in areas with river water beds, plateaus (Punjab) can have lot of water resources & fertile land… they can grow almost everything. They should try eating plant based diet as much as possible. Even they can grow few livestock like cow, goats, chicken & feed them agricultural byproducts like hay, seed husk, etc.
We can fulfil our daily nutrient requirements by just eating 100 grams of meat per day along with plant based food🍖 🥩.
But we are eating a lot more meat than that❌.
So I think people should minimise meat consumption & find a balance between plant based & animal based food to conserve resources & attain better health. 💚
For a person in costal area, fish is a lot cheaper than vegetables & fruits.
People choose what’s local & budget friendly, not vegan friendly 😂.
Since it’s economically impractical for different geographical locations to import veg food from other regions, people will continue to eat local animal based products like dairy, fish & meat…
A nation is not run by fantasies, a nation runs by economics🇮🇳

With the current supply chain system, we can get almost everything in even the remote regions.
The majority of us live in areas where there is no dearth of choices. It's not right to abuse an animal just because it's convenient, easy or cheap.

@@ubansode we can get almost everything anywhere. True✅.
But what about the price… 1kg Indian mackerel in mangalore is 100 rs.
1kg mung dal in mangalore is 200rs minimum.
So what will be their choice of protein.
Algal oil on average is 1500 rs.
But they can get all omega 3 with just 100rs of mackerel.
I live in Mandya district of Karnataka.
Here river fish is 100 per kg.
But chia seeds is 350 per kg.
Vegans can scream all about animal use, but only budget & convenience matters✅
