Install Clutch in a 1g Turbo DSM swapped Elantra

  • You guys asked for an update on a different project. I've been working on the GSX since November and this is one I could squeeze out without getting in the way of other projects.
    TRADE YA needs a clutch. It needs some other things, too, but I'm starting with the clutch. In this video I stay on point with the used-or-junkyard-parts build theme. This car doesn't deserve new parts and I've done all of this before, just never in one video. I need something to run at the track while I'm waiting for parts, polishing and machining. I'm closest to having that happening with the Elantra right now so let's get this over with.
    Consider this the cliff notes of the transmission series, and another step towards making a free car built from used parts run 12's.

    Your videos are awesome great narration and explination. It's great that you don't have to be moving the camera and talking play by play. I like that you're using an old car for us project enthusiasts. Trying to get my garage paved too. But despite its a concrete slab keep a large card box to lie on because cold concrete can take a toll on your body. Other than that keep up tge good work.

    Great job on taking the videos, i get started on a job and remember to take video when i'm putting it back together, or remove the garage door and take video, then completely forget to take video when i put it back in.

    I like to thank you for this video Jafro. I had some fun taking my Proton Satria (which is similar to your Elantra underneath) apart today and was made easier by watching this. Saved me a ballache splitting the lower ball joint out. Plus gives me a heads up for when I need to swap out the gearbox as mine keeps popping out of reverse.

    I didn't see the part in your video description about your goal of all used parts. I'm sure it will "work." My concern was the low spots created by the whizzer disc that won't make contact with the disc.
    Sometimes when working on a rare vehicle or a racing application, it makes sense to have the pressure plate surface prepared for a new clutch disc with a flywheel grinder.

    Yes, I am aware of the recall. The boots were fine and I did not need the recall back then. Not all cars needed the work, only inspection. Some cars you could see the oil trace running down the boot etc.
    Cheers.

    Luckily that speaker wire was big enough gauge not to cause an issue. That is a fire hazard. Might I recommend a race type of kill switch? Is that tupperware for the battery box? Looking forward to seeing what you have planned for improving the battery relocation system.

    Just did a input shaft bearing & clutch rpelacement on an EA5W Galant, very similar setup, was such a delight not to have to deal with a transfer case, tail shaft, plus I'm sure the FWD gearbox is lighter than the damn transfer case haha.

    Floor jack on the rotor is never safe. The video shows the rotor turn. The only thing that would save you is the car falling back onto the jack stand ...if the car doesn't shift too much while you're hammering.
    I don't see the need to compress the spring. You have air pressure, I'd use an air hammer on the knuckle ball joint boss to release the taper.

    Yet another brilliant video :-)
    I really enjoyed that, dont you wish you could do repairs at that speed lol.
    You may want to double up on the battery main power lead, running such a high ampage 3 miles away from the hungry starter is just asking for loads of power loss to the starter, yes its thick wire but it will still lose stacks of voltage :-(
    That looked a pain in the arse to do the clutch, you made it look easy :-)

    I'm surprise you use a powerbuilt torque wrench. They suck from what I've experience. Also, you should try buying some Gearwrench flare wrenches. Cheap flare wrenches will cause issues when you apply a lot of force.

    Clutch job is so easy on a fwd. A buddy of mine and I did it in 2.5 hours last time. you didn't put any anti seize on the axle splines?

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  9 лет назад

      Sgt Balestrini Lol. It's only 7 less bolts. 5 on the transfer case, 2 on the axle. I've pulled a transmission out of a Galant VR-4 in less than half an hour. 10 years later, I bought the car. :P But yeah, those 2 axle bolts are tough to reach if you don't have the right wrenches for it. Those particular 7 bolts are deep under the car making them really inconvenient, but if you have a lift, ain't nothin' but a chicken wing.

    Is it best to have the flywheel turned? Or can you get away with not doing so?

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  6 месяцев назад

      If it worked poorly or had a weird clutch position prior to failing, then yes, turn it to the clutch manufacturer's specification. If it worked fine and the same brand of clutch is going back in it, you don't have to. But I'd at least scuff it up with a scotch brite pad or 80 grit sandpaper first. Just on the friction surface.
