Thank you Robert, I really appreciate the support! Regarding going with ACT, I have had such good luck with their stuff for the last 12 years or so in various cars, I had to try it. That and I got a killer deal on it. Quartermaster makes excellent stuff and has a proven track record, so it was tough not to choose that setup.
Hi Sebastian! Thank you for the very generous offer. I'm likely to do a brake upgrade before suspension so I'm probably a couple years away from that. I actually really like this suspension, but there is definitely room for improvement.
Hi Marc, the best advice is to check with your turbo manufacturer. I've never heard of a specific break-in procedure for a turbo that I've had, but I always prime it with oil before starting the engine. After that I usually take it for an easy drive, let the car cool and check the compressor wheel/shaft for anything unusual. If it all looks good, it's go time!
WADDAP JOE!? I honestly did the whole anti-seize thing in hopes that you would see it. I still remember you shocked and amazed at all of the anti-seize I used back in the day. Haha! Regarding the gloves, I won't make that mistake again- my manicurist was very perturbed and gave me quite the tongue-lashing at the salon yesterday. Hope you are well my friend!
It's just a hobby- something to take my mind off of the day to day grind. I grew up in a service station working on cars, so it's part nostalgia and part hobby really.
The service manual doesn't call for a strut bat engine support that I've seen. Also I have solid motor mounts so the engine doesn't even budge. Also, regarding the transmission dust...it's the magic of special effects! Anyone that would actually, purposely inhale clutch dust is gunning for the top spot in the Darwin awards.
Haha, yeah anti-seize is great for the old digestive system! You're welcome and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I did an Evo clutch job once and it was more difficult than a 1G DSM. The lift would make it far easier though- I did that one on my back. As for dirtying up the garage - Nooooooo! :-)
Hi David, sounds like some folks are offering good suggestions already. Good luck and take your time going through the process of elimination. Test for vacuum leaks, test all sensors with a multimeter as described in the service manual, etc.
No, I'm running ECMLink's speed density setup with their plug n play harness. I was previously running an Evo 8 MAF with ECMLink and really loved it. I would highly recommend that for anything below 500hp or so.
Thanks Cody! I saw a mechanic do it a long, long time ago and have done that ever since. FYI use a screwdriver that you don't love as it may bend it a little.
Thanks Dustin! That would be one benefit of living in the south. There are other benefits, I just can't think of any right now. Give me a couple weeks and I'll get back with you on that. :-)
Thank you man! I'm never thrilled with breaking these videos up into parts, but I've tried lumping it all together and I end up removing small stuff that I think folks would like to see. Part 2 is in the works and will be out soon!
Hi Jerry, I'm really not much on diagnosing a car over the internet- I'm just not good at it. That said, it may have an incorrect flywheel? Also, make sure that your clutch hydraulics are in perfect condition and are adjusted properly.
Thanks Charles! Do me a favor and tell a bunch of folks to watch my goofy videos, I would really appreciate it! Part 2 is currently in production...I'm still breaking in the clutch and my schedule has been NUTSO. See ya!
Thank you and you're welcome! One tip on the anti-seize sandwich- clear your schedule for the next couple days...as you won't be leaving the bathroom. :-D
WANT PART 2 ASAP! Awesome work on the talon. Wish mine was like yours. You should also point on the rear tranny bolt under the starter on the next video for the people who forget about it, I know you know the bolt ! Lol
But anyways your videos are awesome and I always get excited when i see a new video of yours! It's hard to come across mechanics as good as you now-a-days
I agree man. I've done my share of transmission jobs on the floor though. I helped a buddy do an Evo tranny on the floor and it was TERRIBLE. That was the worst by far. Not to mention the razor sharp edges of the various aluminum castings under there. Sliced my hand open like a razor blade.
Tom I every video I watch just gets better and better and leaves me wanting more and more. Is there any plans in the future for a brake upgrade? Im sure at the power levels you are at an upgrade may be in order.
Great videos Tom!!! While I love watching your videos for the work and difference in editing, I absolutely love the comedy side of your channel. Do not change a thing and keep up the good work. One technical question, Why did you choose the ACT over the Quartermaster? I do not want to ruin the next video but would like to hear your input on the subject. Robert
Hey Tom, just want to say your videos are great. Been watching them all morning and I get inspired to finish my project lol. Keep up the good work man.
Tom's Turbo Garage lol I sure will. Got a question you might have an answer to. Got a tsi awd project that grinds when shifting into 2nd, I'm pretty sure is probably the syncro but I've read a badly bled master cylinder or slave can cause that. I haven't had a chance to look into it, just bought it. Figured I'd ask before I pull the transmission lol
Tom, I love the videos. I too am a dsm fan and now own my 2nd talon. It's a 90 tsi awd manual. It currently needs the transmission replaced and thid video is extremely helpful with what I can expect. My question is would there be any differences between the removal in your 91 and my 90? I know mine is 22 spline. Any and all feedback is much appreciated.
Hi Brent and I'm glad you enjoy the videos! Check the VFAQ and a service manual to see if there are any differences. They are very similar I'm sure, but there may be a few odds and ends to watch for.
Thanks, I'll be sure to do that. Maybe even post some talon videos myself when I do it. I noticed you raced at Knoxville. If you don't mind me asking are you local to TN? I ask because I live in chattanooga. I would love to see that vr4 at a meet sometime
Hope that sandwich filled you up! Atleast you know it will slide rite out! You are making that clutch job look WAY WAY to easy lol. Makes me want to go rip the evo apart. Thanks for another awsome vid in that INSANELY clean turbo garage. I think for you next vid you should do used motor oil slip abd slide just to dirty it up a bit :-)
NOOOO! lol I thought I was going to see you install and put it back in the car. guess that's the thrill huh? until next episode :P , keep up the good work cant wait!
are you running a GM mass air flow sensor with the mass air flow translator ? reason im asking is because i am also doing ECM link and just curious as to know what you are using thanks
Hi tom, nice video! By the way, is this process the same for a 2g eclipse GSX awd? The thing is I need to replace the clutch fork ,it broke off all the way inside and I would like to know if it's the same process for the 2g eclipse gsx since they have same engine and I'm assuming mounts too. I've never done something this complicated but it's nearing spring season here in minnesota and I wanna give it a go. Would you recomend me buying the clutch fork and pivot ball of the dealer? And how hard is it to dismount the clutch once I have dropped the transmission from the car.
Hey Tom i have a question, Im having problems with my 1991 eagle talon tsi and my problem is when it idles it goes from 1000rpms to 1200rpms and it goes up and down from there and i replace the Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve and the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and it still keeps going from up and down. any ideas what the problem could be?
Thanks man, it didn't happen overnight, I'll tell ya that much. Just keep a great attitude, work hard, welcome new challenges, accept that sacrifices are necessary and good things will happen.
Well I did sell it as a rolling chassis earlier this year. It's hard to say because many parts were from older cars, etc. but you could figure out what it would take using the mod list on my website talon.turbomirage.com
Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad you enjoy the videos!

That and I got a killer deal on it. Quartermaster makes excellent stuff and has a proven track record, so it was tough not to choose that setup.
Thank you for the great compliment and I'm glad you enjoy the videos! I do plan a brake upgrade and it's badly needed!!! Maybe this fall or winter.

I don't think I've ever seen the underside of a DSM look so clean and rust free. Great video Tom

Thanks and I haven't had any firsthand experience with them. Lots of folks have shared info on the forums about them over the years though.
Thanks Cody! I saw a mechanic do it a long, long time ago and have done that ever since. FYI use a screwdriver that you don't love as it may bend it a little.
This has been on my watch later list for years and i finally watched it today
Thanks a ton Zachary! At this level it's either go automatic, get a twin disc or get a crazy pressure pressure plate setup. Good luck!
Hi there! They were the 6UL from 949 Racing. You can see more about them on my miata website.
Thanks Dustin! That would be one benefit of living in the south. There are other benefits, I just can't think of any right now. Give me a couple weeks and I'll get back with you on that. :-)

Thanks Nick! Regarding your question, "GM mac with matt"? Please clarify.
Thank you and glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks man, it is nice to have a rust-free example. As I said before it's one of at least two benefits to living in the south. :-)
You're welcome Robert! Have a good one!
Thanks Charles! Do me a favor and tell a bunch of folks to watch my goofy videos, I would really appreciate it! Part 2 is currently in production...I'm still breaking in the clutch and my schedule has been NUTSO. See ya!
Great idea on the screw driver inside the vented disk during removal of the axle nut. I always had to set the brakes with a rock or stick.
Thank you and you're welcome! One tip on the anti-seize sandwich- clear your schedule for the next couple days...as you won't be leaving the bathroom. :-D
What's up Jordan! Don't knock it 'til you've tried it!
Haha, thanks man! LOTS MORE TO COME!
WANT PART 2 ASAP! Awesome work on the talon. Wish mine was like yours. You should also point on the rear tranny bolt under the starter on the next video for the people who forget about it, I know you know the bolt ! Lol
Hi there Josh and thank you! Oh yeah, I know that one!
That's a lot of work to get a transmission out. Good job video, very informative and easy to understand.
One of the cleanest 1G's I have ever scene, lucky dude!

Wow, I'm impressed. You're set up better than some mechanics.
Thanks for the reply and I look forward to part two along with some amazing results!!!
Robert
HI Terry, I don't know the total time, as filming slows things down dramatically. Maybe a couple hours?
I don't think it's too bad really. I just dropped the transmission in my GN and it was equally if not more difficult.
Thank you and I'm glad I could help! Good luck and it definitely was not green ketchup. :-/
Good show Tom! Looking forward to your next video!
You did a number on that clutch Tom! Love the Anti-Sieze sandwich. Also saw your hands in this one WITHOUT GLOVES. WTF?!
Great video, Tom! Thanks again for the education and the entertainment! I'm off to have a nice anti-seize sandwich myself while I wait for part 2.
Sweet once again. Cant wait for the next video of the installation!
Thank you Matthew!
Do you have any performance shops near you? The best way is to just take your car in and get an estimate.
Great videos Tom!!! While I love watching your videos for the work and difference in editing, I absolutely love the comedy side of your channel. Do not change a thing and keep up the good work. Thank you and you're welcome!
Hey Tom, just want to say your videos are great. Been watching them all morning and I get inspired to finish my project lol. Keep up the good work man.
Thanks man and I'm glad that you're enjoying the videos! Have fun wrenching on your car!
Tom's Turbo Garage lol I sure will. Got a question you might have an answer to. abe'sdsm Yes, basically you'll need to inspect/test the entire clutch system. Master cylinder, slave cylinder, fluid quality, bled properly, pedal assembly, etc.
I popped open my lappop computer, popped open a pop to drink and up popped your comment. So much pop indeed!

Brent Ward Please do post some video! I do live in Knoxville, I don't get out much these days, but usually go to cars and coffee and stuff like that.
Cool cool nice to know a fellow dsm enthusiast is close. Maybe one day we'll see each other at an event. Keep up the good work.
Don't knock it 'til you've tried it!
You're welcome Ben!
Thanks Joe!
Always love your videos tom. Also 770lbft capacity?! I want to get a twin disc for my setup.
I'll happily bolt a nice single turbo setup on it if Toyota would hand over the ECU code! The ECUs in these things are notoriously on total lockdown.
tom are you running a GM mac with the matt? please respond thanks
you also have one of the cleanest talons i have ever seen !!!!
That's gott be the cleanest rust free talon I've ever seen ,jealousy is an understatement
Great video, thinking about upgrading my act2100 to a Southbend clutch...any experience with them?
Tom.. DID I MENTION HOW MUCH I HATE.......
Not seeing a new video every 12 min.....
Keep up the good work yo'
Thanks, I appreciate that!
It gets about 25mpg with 60/40 highway/city driving.
As always, great video Tom.
Should I not have done that? I suppose that wasn't the use that Permatex had in mind! :-)
Hope that sandwich filled you up! Atleast you know it will slide rite out! You are making that clutch job look WAY WAY to easy lol. Makes me want to go rip the evo apart. Thanks for another awsome vid in that INSANELY clean turbo garage. I think for you next vid you should do used motor oil slip abd slide just to dirty it up a bit :-)
did you use the strut bar engine support? and never blow the dust inside the transmission it will and can kill you over time.
So when's the ISF getting a turbo? It is the "Turbo Garage" after all :p
NOOOO! lol I thought I was going to see you install and put it back in the car. guess that's the thrill huh? until next episode :P , keep up the good work cant wait!
Thank you!
Thank guys for helping me out
Thank you sir!

Hi there, it is a similar process, I would refer to the DSM Forums and the service manual for vehicle specific directions.
Thanks man!
Hi Tom.
I konw it was some time ago for you but what wheels did you have on your miata?
thanks
Thanks!
Damn I changed a clutch on a gen 1 Integra and it wasn't as involved as your dsm how many hrs did it take you to do the whole job
Great vids man. I miss my Dsm.
Thank you!
i have been waiting... and now i have to keep waiting...darn it.
Love your garage, videos and a fellow Mitsubishi owner. Subscribe button smashed lol
Vacuum leak or you need to adjust your tps... hows your tb shaft seals?
I already post them on my FaceBook and tell every DSM and GM guy to come see you. RUclips has a way of burying quality content.
I wanna do w/e you do for a living to afford a nice garage, nice cars, and more importantly the lift!
Thanks man, it didn't happen overnight, I'll tell ya that much. Just keep a great attitude, work hard, welcome new challenges, accept that sacrifices are necessary and good things will happen.
hahaha laughter as you give me back to sting the eye with the same piece, good video and nice dsm
Yes it's isn't, not non-toxic. :-D
Hey Tom what do u recommend on breaking in a turbo
Do a boost leak test. also bleed the coolant.
how much would it cost to have someone put a turbo in to an eagle talon and also buy it
hey, how much mpg does this beast make, just wondering, please answer
Lol I was messing around youtube again and you poped up. Your vids pop up a lot; your rather popular.
So much pop in this comment :D
I bet the outtake of you eating that anti seize sandwich is funny. I imagine a little barf was involved.
carl shneebly Well, not to let ya peek too far behind the curtain, but it wasn't actually anti-seize. I think that would be bad for humans. :-D
Hahahaha. You don't say.
how much time it takes to do the job?
how much do you have invested in your talon right now? and how much power is it putting down?
Well I did sell it as a rolling chassis earlier this year. It's hard to say because many parts were from older cars, etc. but you could figure out what it would take using the mod list on my website talon.turbomirage.com
Haha, thanks Sean!
Q: Is this your living or a hobby? Pretty nice set up if the latter
What make/model torque wrench do you use? Looks nice.
Thanks Dustin, it's an old Snap-On model.
great vids man keep up coming
