Looking for a History of Photography for WWII Japanese War Brides・第二次世界大戦中の日本人花嫁の写真撮影の歴史を探る

Join Elena Creef for an exploration of vernacular photographs taken by World War II Japanese war brides, the women who married American servicemen and relocated to the US in the postwar decades. Creef asks how we can construct history for a group of immigrant women who have been largely invisible within Japanese and American histories. To do so, she builds a new archive of everyday snapshot photography that can be analyzed for subtle patterns that allude to the ways that war brides built lives for themselves in a foreign land.
エレナ・クリーフが第二次世界大戦中にアメリカ軍兵士と結婚し、戦後数十年の間にアメリカに移住した日本人花嫁が撮影したヴァナキュラーフォトを探求します。クリーフは、日米の歴史の中でほとんど目にすることのなかった移民女性たちの歴史をどのように構築できるかを問いかけ、日常のスナップショット写真の新しいアーカイブを構築します。それらを通して、戦争花嫁が異国の地で自分たちの生活を築いた方法を暗示する微細なパターンを分析することができるのです。
Behind the Camera is an open-source website that creates new critical directions on the history of photography, feminist art history, and the history of modern Japan. The project is generously supported by grants from the University of British Columbia, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and the Art Research Center at Ritsumeikan University.

日本人の血をひいた優秀な方の動画、たくさんの素敵なお写真を大変興味深く拝見しました。有難うございました。私の遠い親戚にも元米軍に所属していた男性とアメリカに渡った女性がいます。彼女は、イギリス人とのハーフでしたが、戦時中、日本に来ていた男性と結婚し、戦後、お２人で本国に戻り、医師として働いていたと言う話でした。私が学生の頃、大きなプールを背景にした娘さんの写真（当時、日本にまだ無かったポラロイドで撮った写真）で拝見しましたが、一度もお会いした事が無いので、いつもお会いしたいと思っています。

This was really interesting. Thank you so much for working on Behind the Camera project. I heard there were conflicts (or just ignorance) between Japanese immigrants (1) who came to work and who came as a (2) war brides. There are many oral history archives on (1) but not so much on (2). I’d love to know more.
