Btw does the machine for air train take $5 cash? Do I need to buy pay per ride metro card added with $5 when I buy ticket at Lirr?

There is a type of combined ticket that on one side is a metrocard, on another side the LIRR ticket. That should work for you. If you want the cheapest option either use a CityTicket(Valid only on weekends) or an off peak pass, but if you do that you will have to use or buy (if you don't have) a Metrocard.
