@@AmoreTheSuccubus oh it’s not the discomfort or anything like that. It spawns from claustrophobia. It sounds totally irrational because it is lol, but there’s no way I could wear one because of that phobia. It’s beautiful and I love the idea behind it, though. It seems like a lovely tradition.
So since no one seems to actually know what it’s for. Jade is supposed to have many spiritual properties. One of which being absorbing or blocking out negative energies. Sort of similar to a Dreamcatcher. The jade breaks once it has absorbed or blocked a significant amount of negative energy.
As an Vietnamese Asian. I can confirm you have to keep it on - its been a generation in my family. Edit : SRRY IF I USED THE WRONG WORD- I was in a rush so I didn't think much of it.
The correct word to use here is "tradition" instead "generation". However, you could say; "It has been a tradition in my family for generations." No hate, just wanted to share information.❤
*I was a receptionist at a full-service salon for 3 years & the Viet nail techs gave me a jade bracelet* She told me I had made an impact in her life, so she told me to keep it. I still have it 12 years later 😢
You must have truly meant something to them. They don’t just give jade to anyone. It’s great having friends like that who show how much you mean to them.
Anything crazy or unfavorable start happening in your life since you received the bracelet? Be careful receiving items, especially from people from other cultures and who worship OTHER gods, not the one true God which is above all gods...
@@daughteroftheking9753 i am vietnamese catholic myself but wearing traditional jewelry does not imply anything. the jade bangle's protection is just a superstition and has nothing to do with a god or such. if anything, most don't believe in it but gift it as a sign of affection and love. all things that god wants humans to do for each other. "especially from people with other cultures who worship OTHER gods" is a disgusting sentiment to spread, there is a huge vietnamese catholic population. we also respect those who are not catholic. stop your bigoted comments, god created all of us with different cultures. you should be ashamed of yourself.
A kid in a filipino village once gifted me this kind of bracelet (but not in jade of course) I forced it into my wrist, it broke off midway and sliced my thumb open, blood everywhere. It was 12 years ago, till this day I still have a huge scar on my thumb but I consider it a beautiful memory 😊
I'm not Vietnamese, but I also wear a special piece of jade that you're not supposed to take off - mine is a Pounamu 💖 blessed and then gifted to me by my mum. I worked for a Vietnamese family a few years back, and they always treated me like family as well. It's interesting to see how our cultures can connect over similar symbols!
@@thoaitai Yes! I'm male, and mine is in the teardrop (roimata) shape. It symbolises strength and healing. It was given to me before I moved out of my family home and went to study 😁

my vietnamese and chinese grandma valued her jewelry so much because none of it was fake, she told me when she died id have her jewelry and if i ever sold it, she’d haunt me haha. im wearing one of her jade necklaces right now
That's exactly what it is. Grandma is jaded, and binding her... Wants her bitter. That's grandmas sweet. Ugh... My grandma would do things like that... And look at you oddly when you say I love you... It's not my grandma. My grandma is German but she rings grandma Therese bells so there's no way I'm wrong
My grandmother had one she wore ever since I can remember and never took it off. She was so heartbroken one day when she woke up and it had broken into pieces in the night.
That just means it did it's job. It protected her from something. I mean, she woke up and saw that it broke. Maybe it protected her from passing away in her sleep.
I would imagine you could have an exception because it's like a cultural thing similar to if you are Muslim and you wear a hijab or your religion says you can't eat pork
@@Splintz246yes you definitely can. I’m 22 and even when I was in elementary school over a decade ago schools had to make exceptions for things like that. I don’t remember the specifics but I was friends with a kid who’s family was from Africa (again I don’t remember specifically where in Africa) but she had a bracelet that was not able to be taken of (literally welded around her wrist to make it too tight to remove) for religious purposes. The schools obviously had to accommodate that and make exceptions for her. Idk how schools work now but that’s how they used to be. I imagine that this would pass under that except as well even if it’s less of a religious thing and more cultural in general
As a Vietnamese yes this is correct you have you have to keep it on your whole life but occasionally you can take it off to clean if you can 😂 Edit: this blowing up🤯
for anyone struggling to put their jade bracelet on, i strongly advise trying the bag method where you use lotion and slowly unroll an inverted bag into your wrist. look it up if you are confused! :)
I had a classmate in 8th grade that had one of these (not sure if it was vietnamese or another similar culture) the thing is, some teachers complained about it bc we were not allowed to use "accessories" and demanded that she took it off. Her mother was so pissed that she changed her to another school almost immediately. The school changed their accessories rule after that. In the following years, you could see more students wearing family heirlooms and traditional items. They even allowed quinceañera rings to be worn.
That's actually really amazing! You get to experience the mix of cultures to the max, and the school taking consideration of those traditions and changed for them, just beautiful 😊
Bit of an extreme tradition tbh. Idk the safety purposes of not wearing bracelets in P.E. but I feel like it'd be more dangerous for the bracelet cuz I'm pretty sure you use your hands and wrists on the ground in P.E. (getting up clumsily could maybe damage it).
@@nowirehangers2815lmfao saying ‘victim card’ when someone has an issue? You must be really bloody repressed considering you aren’t perfect and without problems, and that’s a fact.
@necrochemical5572 so the Jade bracelet goes as I've heard & seen. It's given to the let's say 15yr old(as in Hispanic families with quinceanera) Then one can be handed down or a new one bought for but when or if they get to the point of wanting to take it off they are supposed to break it off(easy, not hard at all). Samoan also has the same thing with Hawaiian Culture with gold bangles. Then ya got the ladies with the elongated necklaces
My grandma tried to make me wear one of these once....and while I absolutely love the gesture and gift....it terrified me to have her try and force it on my wrist, knowing I wouldn't be able to take it off. Idk being stuck scares me.

I'm Greek and we have similar bracelets. We wear string bracelets that can't be loosened until it breaks. When it does, the belief is the bracelet protected you from something bad. Idk how this tradition is but I love it either way
In Vietnam or any culture that uses jade as the pin point of jewelry, it supposed to bring good luck, like wearing read or gold on Chinese new year, also my aunt has had her jade bracelet for 30 years and it hasn't broke or grown out of her👍.
Me too. I’m autistic, and as much as I think watches and bracelets are beautiful, I can’t wear them, I just can’t have anything on my wrists. Just bothers me for some reason.
I was gifted a jade necklace from a stranger once. I still have it and wear it occasionally but I am afraid of it getting damaged or lost, so it is usually kept safely at home. It feels like a special piece, more than just a necklace for sure.
Hey, that was an incredible gesture! Jade is meant to be worn daily, as it protects you from evil/bad luck. If ot breaks, then it has protected you from something by absorbing evil. That's why you should always wear it, and never fear it breaking.
@@marthamaywhovier5962 thank you, I will wear this daily then, starting today! We definitely had a spiritual connection when we met. I felt like the stranger (Leo) had been sent directly to me!

My old teacher in early middle school was gifted a beautiful jade bracelet and it couldnt fit her so she never got to wear it. It was from her brothers wife's mom in japan at their wedding. I was doing a huge study on japan and she gave me the brides maids dress she wore for it and the bracelet. Some people might view it like handcuffs, but she’s telling her not to take it off not because she wants to control her or make her uncomfortable (the bracelet def fits fine) but because its how she shows love and care; the jade is supposed to be good luck and protection. She wants her to keep it on to be safe.
Well that arm will never fit into a tight space again lol if she hits it on something it will hurt her 10x worse. It like to be able to take jewelry off because sometimes you don’t want something on that will hurt you

Same I’m not the only one. Claustrophobia is the perfect way to describe how I feel. I’m not shaming this tradition but I would never be able to be comfortable. I’d constantly be thinking about it and scratching to remove it.
This. It’s hell for me to even imagine that.
i dont think i could get used to a bracelet or necklace , but ive worn a (plastic) choker for like 6-7 years now , i feel naked without it but i rarely take it off
A lot of Vietnamese old people are kind so respect them they will try to get stuffy that is nice to them and give it to you if you are family

The way my anxiety shot through the roof at the idea of not being able to remove it 🙈
Oh please
since its so comfortable to wear and natural it wont cause discomfort. its easy to forget about it
@@AmoreTheSuccubus oh it’s not the discomfort or anything like that. It spawns from claustrophobia. I absolutely panic if I am stuck in a place or if anything is stuck on me… think full blown hyperventilating panic attacks while trying on a dress I couldn’t immediately get off.

It’s a beautiful bracelet I wish I had one like it
I had a classmate in 8th grade that had one of these (not sure if it was vietnamese or another similar culture) the thing is, some teachers complained about it bc we were not allowed to use "accessories" and demanded that she took it off.
