  • After a couple of recent boat fishing trips using SPJ tactics over some of the wrecks off South Devon UK, one jig in particular has really stood out catching me the vast majority of my fish lately.

    Thanks from New Zealand. We use slow pitch jigs, and kabura/ bay rubber style skirted jigs here, for snapper and kingfish. Lots of fun

      Appreciate your comment Joe thank you. It's a brilliant method isn't it!! so much fun and so effective too most of the time, can only imagine what it must feel like to fight a good kingfish on slow pitch gear.. Silly amounts of fun I should think

    I do slow jigging in Hong Kong but now I am immigrated to UK. May I know how deep is the water because I 150gram with that sharp of Jig is A LOT to me. I usually use 20 to 40 g in 30m deep ocean for tuna and mackerel.. Hope someday I can get on boat again and fishing in this beautiful country !

    It looks like you are not using a dedicated jigging rod?. I want to give it a go before splashing out £200-£300 on a specialised rod. I have a spinning rod 20-40G and a 12-20 Ilb boat road.

    • @saltwaterjunky607
      @saltwaterjunky607  3 месяца назад

      No I don't use dedicated jigging rods I just like a good fixed spool spinning setup, nothing against the overhead setups it's only me being stubborn and sticking to what I know and love. I do believe a proper SPJ setup does make the whole process more efficient and perhaps a bit less tiring over the course of the day, however it is quite doable with a spin rod as you've seen.
      A quick note on casting weight ratings on your rod, I find for virtical fishing as a general rule of thumb you can use double the weigh of what your spinning rod is rated to cast, so for a 40grm rated rod you should be able to get away with using jigs up to 80grms in weight for virtical fishing. Hope that makes sense

      Hi Wayne, I use 120 - 150 grm slow jigs out there probably 99% of the time 👍

    Looks like great fun! I’m assuming that jig weight being used is determined by strength of tide and not necessarily depth of water alone? Also have you had any success with turbot etc with this technique ?

    • @saltwaterjunky607
      @saltwaterjunky607  2 года назад +2

      Thanks Tomos, yes you're right the strength of tide is a major factor to consider when selecting what weight of jig to use. I haven't seen or caught any flat fish species on slow pitch jigs myself.

    Hi there! Ive been Jigging here in the Philippine waters but I'd me moving in the UK by February. May I ask if there are deep jigging spots in the UK? I usually drop between 140 to 250m using 300 to 400g jigs. But I do have gears for shallower waters too. I just started my YT channel too and will upload videos soon.

      Hi thanks for your comment, to be honest much of my offshore fishing experience is to the same kind of areas so I'm not really sure what depths you would encounter jigging around other parts of the uk but from what I understand it's probably fairly shallow water compared to the kind of depths that you mentioned.
