@@Jaegerrants That is normally true, but compared to e.g. Copenhagen, Finnish coastal cities are a lot less humid. I am from Helsinki but the only places where I have lived and felt really cold is Denmark and England, and that was because of the humidity. You simply cannot protect yourself against it!
I really enjoyed this show of Oulu, Finland. I was born in Finland in 1954, and lived in Oulu until the age of 5 when migrating to Australia with my family. I still have many relatives in Patijoki in Oulu. Many thanks. Pirkko from Queensland Australia
I really enjoyed watching your video. You captured real Fin at the right time. ^^ This is exactly what I’m holding memories in my heart. I went to school in Finland which was already +20 yrs ago. I got a real deep nostalgia about this humble country. Thank you so much
Loved this video! Thank you so much! You have a wonderful mentality of making the most out of any situation. Thank you also for appreciating a healthy diet rich with whole plant based foods and recycling old gear. There is beauty in the contrast between darkness and light, and we sure do have plenty of that here in Finland.
You chose quite a dreary time to visit Finland :) November in finnish is marraskuu. Marras is an ancient word for death, dying, spirits of the dead... I recommend Lapland in the first months of the year or second week of September, if you like nature. Not Rovaniemi, go up North. Or the archipelago around Turku during the warm time. Or lake Finland in the East. In the South, Porvoo is a cute little town with wooden houses. Also Rauma on the west coast, the old town. There are many nice places, but November in Finland is something we Finns just have to endure somehow, no good time to come for a visit.
For the wooden buildings, Porvoo is a must! The countryside in the Lakeland region is 5/5 as well but harder to appreciate without a local host (a proper sauna should be a part of the deal) and in mid summer of course ;)
2:46 love going to thrift stores, ive bought so many old PC games it's insane. Sort of sucks that retro video games are often quite overpriced, making it often not worth buying them the few times you find them. Outside of a few rare exceptions (big box versions of classic pc games), pc games are very cheap (they go for 5Kr to 25kr or roughly 50 cents to 2.50$). Used to frequent the many thrift stores we have in my Swedish town, now not so much (health issues).
That light festival really was worth seeing. It was just -5 C but as it was November and one of the first frozen weeks, it felt a lot colder than that. I loved the video installation inside the Oulu Cathedral and the ones at the city library. The light festival has been growing each year and I'm already waiting for this year's installation.
Thank you, I enjoyed the video! Even though it was dark and chilly here in Finland during your visit, you found lots of positive things about Oulu. Please don't worry about the pronunciation, seems petty to me to go on about that.
"What can you do inside when it's -5 °C outside?" = anything. "How do Finns find affordable winter clothing?" Remember three names: Halpahalli, Tokmanni and when there are discount sales, probably also Dressman. "When the sun sets at 14:55, how do Finns light up the outside?". Just press the button in your houses entrance/atrium and your doorstep light lits up.
november is especially tough because you know you have 3-4, even 5 months of cold months ahead of you, the only thing you're excited for during these times is christmas and skiing...
We are used to the cold here in north Idaho. Last November, we experienced minus 15F, and other days of subzero temps. But those are cold snaps, lasting only a few days. As I write this, we are about to plunge back into single digits for a few days. No subzero if we are lucky. But it is no big deal. You just dress for it. Finland in the winter sounds quite pleasant.
@@WardDorrity Idaho, nice. I would be really interested to visit USA's western states, so beautiful there. I personally don't mind winter, but most people here dislike it because of the darkness and cold. The big contrast to the warm summers with 24 hour sunlight makes it seem worse than it really is. November is definitely the worst month in Finland though, it's just an empty, dull, quite useless month. You guys atleast have Thanksgiving at that time lol.
@@sqb_ You will find a lot of friendly folks here in the inland Northwest. Please visit if you ever get the chance. Syöte - I rent out a cabin there. The skiing is good, and so is the forest, hiking or mountain biking at midnight getting a sun tan
