The Storm of 1973 That Ravaged Brighton Pier
Residents of the seaside town of Brighton watched in disbelief as a storm battered their Victorian-era Palace Pier. The last remaining of Brighton's three historic piers, it was home to an ornate theatre at its end-a landmark forced to close its doors for the last time.

Common wisdom says if you want to hike from A to B over a few days, you need to book an "official" place to stay, like a campsite. But what if you want to experience real nature? Online moaners who've never been hiking advise don't do this or that, filling you with fear until you cancel your plans entirely. How Victorians Built This Lighthouse at Sea

Creepy Theme Park Abandoned to the Snow 🇫🇮
Adam Trimingham. The Sage of Sussex
I’m looking to sleep overnight in my Tesla. Do the municipal campsites have electric charging for cars?
There was a section of the West Pier removed to prevent the Germans using it as a landing point during WW2. My father was one of those working for a scrap metal merchant cutting out the section to be removed. The original metal was wrought iron and after WW2 this was replaced with mild steel. Wrought iron lasts longer in a marine environment than mild steel.
Wonderful feature, with some brilliant photographs. I remember all this so well. I was 13 at the time. The day after the storm, the beach all the way to Black Rock was a mass of wreckage, mostly pitch pine decking, silver painted onion domes, and bits of Moorish arches. It was a pitiful sight amongst the grey and the spray. But it was rebuilt, and I remember going into the theatre auditorium just once, and being knocked out by its beauty. The seats were dark blue plush, the decorations gilt and white. But the worst thing was the coming back. One winters afternoon in 1986 I drove down from London with a girlfriend. I wanted to show her the town where I grew up. As we came along Marine Parade, the Pier came into view, and the theatre had gone. Vanished. No-one ever said where to, just gone. I know we later sat on the beach in the dying yellow light of December, and I felt part of my childhood slip away. The rest of Brighton followed, bit by bit, over the coming years. Its an alien place, now.
Many people preferred the theatre on Brighton's West Pier, sadly long since but a few metal stumps sticking out of the water.
I worked at the Royal Albion hotel at the time. We watched the Helter Skelter crash into the sea from the hotel restaurant. Tons of stuff washed up on the beach over the next few days. Used to fish on the landing stage. The baked potato shop was a cheap lunch and a welcome change from sandwiches.
Im from Pakistan in ready work here
You are adorable! Maybe that is the wrong word, but you are just amazingly wonderful.❤
Is it common for them to have WiFi
Hove - my home town! Spent many summer days on the beaches by the lawns as a child. Back in the 19th century the lawns were fenced off and only the residents of seafront properties were admitted. And there was some very posh promenading indeed, where the lucky ones allowed in loved to show off the latest fashions. A complete self-contained community centred around the first development, Brunswick Square, was built in the then still-green fields about 200 years ago, and is an interesting place to explore even today. In some parts W of the lawns there have been big changes (which continue) but, by comparison, the lawns themselves remain almost untouched. Shame about the dog shite though. I thought that particular problem from selfish & anti-social dog owners was something that disappeared years ago…
Would love to see a photo of it fenced off like that. Some pictures show horses riding where the Lawns currently are with Brunswick Square in the background. Presumably the grass was added later.
Not as naff as Southport dear.
So how did they build the dam?
Info from the book linked in the description: "Iron sheets were hammered into the soft upper layer of chalk to a height of 8ft (2.5m) above high water. Concrete was used to finish the damn."
Great video. I wonder what it would take to knock the lighthouse over. There's must be a limit.
“All zones” means that you can travel anywhere in the city but also well outside the city so the extra cost is unnecessary instead its better to get a “Zone 1” ticket all public transportation inside Oslo is zone 1 the other zones are out of the city
Nice! The ticket is even better value for money that I realised then.
Great video; It showed up in the recommended and I was like, Wow amazing edit and narrator Hopefully you get the recognition you deserve
I like the music so refreshing 🎉❤❤
before you even got off the boat, you saw 2 historical buildings. Corbiere Light House is the first concrete poured Light House in the British Isles. Elizabeth Castle was where the last siege of the British Civil War took place on British soil. you are incorrect about Lothringen, the Command bunker was a tourist attraction back in the late 70's, when the C.I.O.S opened it up as a living museum. my favourite bunker that they restored is the M19 at Corbiere. which is well worth a visit, as well as my mate Damian's Occupation Museum at the end of the five mile road.
Thanks for adding context to these locations. The only lighthouse I've looked into is Beachy Head, which is made of granite. It's interesting that they used concrete for this one.
wow
Ok, but how did they build the dam? That’s what I’m looking for.
Good question. Here's what I found in the book: "Iron sheets were hammered into the soft upper layer of chalk to a height of 8ft (2.5m) above high water. Concrete was used to finish the damn."
@@tomgoesnomad thank you. It impresses me how stable they are against the waves to this day. Great video!
Great video! I have been trying to figure out how the la jument lighthouse was built which lead me here.
Interesting. Looks like that one was built around the same time. Did they cheat and build it on a rock?
Excellently put together. Deserves more views!
If they built it that close to the shore, why not just build it on the shore?
This lighthouse replaced another one on the cliff top nearby. Apparently there was a problem with fog obscuring the light there.
Thanks, I found that really helpful.
I imagine this refers to the concrete bunker. This was used for meetings but he didn't sleep there. He slept in a wooden building nearby. In addition due to the weather it was too hot for meetings in the fuhrer bunker and a much more flimsy wooden building with windows was used. The Russians went to great lengths to blow up Hitler's bunker but the pieces were so huge to let them be taken away.
Very informative. Thank you 👍
You're very welcome.
Don't try to patch the puncture same like location if the tyre falls into the river you will be screwed
There is not any need for security on that border.
Wow didn't know he was there for so long
Build my own hotel. Well that's the way you get it right. Brilliant.
Where is this? What a great find.
It's on La Gomera in the Canary Islands. I found it randomly at the end of a hike I did across the island, like it was a free gift.
Canary Islands absolutely incredible. I love that place
I wish more people were like you. Less concerned with the activities of others and interested solely in the pursuit of the self. These people who cannot think for themselves will live in the confines of rules and restrictions their entire lives - and so resent those that live by their own. More power to you brother. Awesome video.
i love the opening scene, i always missed that kind of ntense but we need to move stealh-ly. I dont mind with the horror of ghosts, jin, creatures, carnivors etc, im a harcore i believe some rules r made just for safety reason, but sometimes rules also made to control things esp the people, for some reason i dont mind. But no, i dont need some one sided rules, i just need one. wild camping is for wild people only, not the bad wild but the wise wild like me n you, yes you, LOL. im 26 years soloing, nomadic inside my own country, the wild tropical but strangely beautiful of Indonesia, n im on Papua now for 7 years, roaming in the rain forest, talking to the right trees just to watch and live side by side with the birds of paradise. i envy to a vlogger like you, im an autis, i cant face to face with people
I wish I wasn't so paranoid every time I hear a voice or a cough when camping like this. Hopefully it will get easier with time. Until then, I have earplugs so I can actually sleep. You are having real adventures in Indonesia. Not everything has to be recorded and shared, but I believe talking to a camera is a skill that most people can pick up (I'm still learning).
@@tomgoesnomadjust be safe n keep sharp my friend, i will be watching your next vlogs, lets learn n grow together
WHAT tent are you using? it looks very neat and portable
Sure, it's the Shittake model made by nevergowildcampingincorporated. Never go wild camping, it's very dangerous young man. You better be using that tent in your backyard only.
@@jakegraham7265 😅😅😅
@kasperand it's the Forclaz MT900 from Decathlon. It's my first lightweight tent but works really well for me.
The reason they don't allow wild camping is because a lot of people are disrespectful to nature and leave behind all their trash. If you leave no trace I can't see anyone having a single problem with it. Just stay out of sight where cops might see you, pack up early in the morning and nobody will even know. I am definitely planning on doing this with my girlfriend during our Europe tour this summer!
Wholeheartedly agree.
Thanks for your fantastic movie
I've not done it for years, but there's nothing more freeing then wild camping!
So ? What's new ?
Just because you-re a bum and never put a brick in top of another, who gave you the right to judge others? they should never? Why speak big words, phrases, you don't understand?
30fps 💀
Interesting to hear your thoughts. Good video!
i'm not sure that this matters. people come up with great ideas while riding, but the actual speech we give while on the bike is not usually the easiest to listen to as we didn't yet have the time to find the exact right words. so recording the idea for yourself is absolutely useful, but a voice recording will do that just fine. after it's a fully fledged idea of a speech, whether the camera you use is stationary or not makes little difference.
a feat on par with crossing the DMZ to north Korea
During one hiking trip me and my wife walked from Norway to Sweden, then from Sweden to Finland and finally from Finland back to Norway.
Så dere gikk rundt treriksrøsa da.😂
@@leif-kareeikeland5209 Basically yes, but not only on the little island around the cairn. We left our car in Signaldalen, hiked toGappohytta and slept there. Then we hiked to Pältsätuga and Pältsä waterfall. From there we hiked to Kuohkimajärvi, spent two nights there and hiked via Goldahytta to the top of Bárrás, slept one night on the slope of Bárrás and hiked back to our car.
In the Nordic countries this has been normal for ages. Back in 1979, I was coming on a train from Denmark to Sweden and as usual, the border controls came and asked for passports, I didn't care to dig out my passport so I just said to them "Finländare" (Finnish in Swedish language), nothing else. They didn't bother me after that, they just asked the other people for their passports.
"Trying to WALK", the street sign in the thumbnail is indicating the walk/bike lane across the boarder. There is no need to try, just go :)
The world should be easy to travel between borders like it used to be free and easily, countries are an idea, idea's should not dictate where people can go, every person has a right to travel this earth freely.
You should now try walking to Norway from Sweden ;)
I used to cross the border every morning and afternoon for over two years back when I was studying in Tornio. I drove whilst iiving in Kalix and when I later on moved to Haparanda i used to ride my bike or walk. As a student I was no stranger to parties either, and on weekends I crossed drunk on several occations. Over the years the border guards only stopped me once, while driving to school. A couple of years after exam they closed the border check all together. "The twin cities" surely live up to their name! These days I travel to Tornio once in a while to stock up on licorice and finnish sausages.
Where next? Balkans!? 🎉
