I think it's because, since it only rolls around once every 4 years, it makes it that much more special and entire countries can rally around athletes and live and die along with them.

Yeah but let's face it Pistorius has it much tougher because the blades are awful at the start.
Oscar Pistorius' winning time at the 2012 Paralympics in the 400m was 46.68 secs, the T44 world record is 45.39.
Kirani James' winning time in the Olympic 400m was 43.94 and the able bodied world record is 43.18.
