    The year 2023 brings a new BREGUET Type 20 and BREGUET Type XX. This is a new generation of chronographs powered by an all-new calibre. Four years of preparation preceded the arrival of the new generation of iconic Type 20 and Type XX watches, this time, issued in two versions to meet all expectations: one military-inspired (Type 20) and the other drawing on the finest civilian models (Type XX). Taking cues from the first-generation models, Breguet has instilled a contemporary, dynamic and technological spirit into these watches. The Type 20 and Type XX saga clearly shows no sign of petering out!
    The new Calibre 728
    After four years of development at the Manufacture Breguet, the brand is delighted to present the new self- winding Calibre 728 for the civilian version and Calibre 7281 for the military version. Combining robustness and innovation, this movement and its variant are protected by several patents. It incorporates all the designs of a modern chronograph such as a column wheel, vertical clutch, 5 Hz frequency as well as an innovative zero-resetting activation system. Alongside these elements, it also benefits from the latest technical innovations in the field of chronometry (precision timing). The balance-spring, the escape-wheel and the pallet-lever horns are made of silicon. In addition to being resistant to corrosion and wear, silicon is insensitive to the influence of magnetic fields and improves the accuracy of the timepiece. Moreover, this self-winding chronograph has a 60-hour power reserve. Both models are equipped with a “flyback”. This function is a precious asset for pilots, replacing the three operations previously required with just one. Different times and directions that require evaluation are easily handled using the “flyback” function. These innovative activation and zero- resetting systems have been designed for crisp and accurate use. Whatever function is performed, the pressure felt on the pushers will be even and balanced. The same applies to the vertical clutch mechanism, which has been adopted for the accuracy of its activation. The chronograph hand thus starts instantly without any initial jerks. To make the movement robust and guarantee its precision even in case of potential impacts, a cross-through bridge was chosen to secure the balance in place. Sized in such a way as to occupy a maximum of the available space within the movement, the barrel - the energy source - is equipped with a spring whose high-energy-density material enables a longer power reserve. Finally, this new movement’s other asset lies in its aesthetics, as significant work has been done on its decoration. In addition to the sunburst pattern, snailing, bevelling, circular-graining and other visible decorations on the components, Breguet has treated the column wheel to a black DLC treatment that heightens visual contrast while improving tribological properties. The sapphire crystal caseback provides a chance to admire the details of the movement, including its blackened oscillating weight shaped like an aircraft wing and engraved with the Breguet logo.

    Beautiful watches. The new movement looks sharp and has excellent specifications. I am quite relaxed about date windows. Some are religiously opposed to them, in all cases. Others will claim (genuinely) that they don't mind them, depending on the execution. Others will (disingenuously) claim that the execution of the window is the problem, not the presence of the window itself, but really they just use that as an excuse to criticise a watch they simply don't like, cannot justify spending on, or perhaps cannot afford at all (i.e. they were never in the market for the watch in the first place). I have to admit, this date window execution is one of my least favourite, but I just don't think it ruins the watch. It's still absolutely stunning. Perhaps a future no-date release will please those who genuinely like the watch but just wish it had a cleaner dial. Tastes can be very different! Thank you for bringing another great video for us Alexander. 🙂

The Daytona is ideal but I’m still waiting for the call. Which leads me to price. I don’t think the TypeXX is overpriced, it’s just expensive with no upside if you decide some day to dump it. Great review! I would like to point out that the 15-minute counter of the XX (2067) is a REAL 15-minute counter. This is in contrast to the predecessor (Ref. 3800). Both the 3800 and the new 2067 have the same minute counting dial layout. However, the minute counting hand on the 3800 performs one full rotation in 30 minutes, not 15 minutes. This also means that the 2057 and the 2067 have different gear ratios on the minute counter. You could have dropped a few words on this interesting little detail. P.S.: The 15-minute counter on the 2067 is the reason why the hour counter has four minor ticks.

    Excellent review Alexander! I just ran into your video about this beautiful piece.
    To my eyes, Breguet made an almost perfect aviation/traveler’s watch. The civilian version has a couple of very useful functions that would benefit me as a constant traveler. Easily being able to track a second time zone with the outer bezel, counting down time to events, and even timing things with the chronograph. Furthermore, with a 100 meter water resistance, it appears to be a watch that can take some “real world” abuse!
    The only things I wish they would have added; white gold to the Roman numerals and hands, and a folding clasp. Other than that, they’ve hit the mark..

    As always, the video on the watches is great. However, the watches themselves are lacking in some major areas. Besides the obvious criticism of the date window, they're also far too big and thick, the cut off numerals are not necessary (and accentuated by the date window), and the price is much too high in light of the minimum decoration of the movement (one of the primary reasons to by a high horology brand like Breguet) and lack of the signature coin edging on the case. The apparently now discontinued Type XXI models, particularly the 3187 are a much better package and value.
    Hopefully subsequent models in the new line will address these issues (and the Swatch Group starts providing Breguet and Blancpain with the marketing and support they deserve which may justify the increased prices). Until then, I'd rather purchase a Longine Avigation Big Eye for a fraction of the price, and use the balance towards a Breguet Classique or Tradition.

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  Год назад

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us and your kind feedback! The new XX/20 chronographs are now loyal to the original design … I personally find that great and I can’t wait to see what is next… the fact though that many here, including you, compare Breguet with Longines tells us that Breguet should do some real efforts to communicate how GOOD and unique these watches are…

    • @steveshap1
      @steveshap1 Год назад +1

      @@WatchAdvisor Watch has terribly neglected marketing and support for both Breguet and Blancpain. With respect to the new Type XX's, if they were really loyal to the original design, they'd be much smaller, thinner and cheaper. Breguet is charging high horology prices, but the finishing is bare and Breguet just doesn't have the level of cache it used to and the Type XX was never really a high horology watch. I believe Breguet mostly balanced things properly in the now discontinued Type XXI.
      I hope you're right that there two models are just the start of a wider and more diverse line, and Breguet takes the comments of enthusiasts as constructive criticism.
      In any event, keep up the good work and I look forward to future videos.

    The military version can be a 12 hour timer by moving the bezel bug to the starting position of the hour hand. It's then easy to infer how many half hours have elapsed.

    Yes, they may release new versions in the future, and personally I don’t mind a date window at 4:30 position as long as it’s properly designed. Unfortunately, in this case the date window is way too conspicuous to the point of cropping the 5 numeral.
