Thank you, that was a HUGE help. My brother just passed away and he had a broken anvil on his impact driver that he was working on. This allowed me to finish his last project successfully. Thanks again
Great presentation; will be used in the future. I needed to get out a stuck flat-side hex bit. Warning: do not use bits without the indent on the hex shaft in these tools, especially the very short bits. I thought "no big deal". Turns out it is a big deal as they get stuck. Use only bits with the indent (a place for the balls, sleeve and spring to secure it). After learning that complete disassembly will not help with this problem, I persisted including phone calls to makita technical service. First, using the video and having removed the circlip, spring and washer, then I got a quality Irwin pair of vise.-grips after trying various pliers and managed to get a good bite from head-on of what very little remained exposed of the stuck bit. Pulling and levering on it did no good; so I got another good bite and wedged a small screwdriver and pried between the housing and the collar a couple of times each at 180 degrees re-setting the vise grips each time and gradually got out enough of the bit to get the vise grips on opposite flats of the hex and then pulled hard and she came easy. I will never use those short bits in this tool again. Lesson learned. Getting the circlip out was key. Thanks
After seeing the potential I feel like converting my bosch impact driver to a square drive, no idea if it will work or not but sounds like fun to try. No kit available but I suspect the anvils may be interchangeable if not i'll make it fit, thank you for the inspiration.
I found this video, ordered the parts I needed and did the anvil replacement. The bits were "sticking" in the chuck and I couldn't get them out, so thought it might be the anvil. Much cheaper than taking it to a Makita Repair shop and took less time. The video goes pretty fast, I paused as needed. Thought the trickiest part was putting the transmission and motor back into place after tapping in the bearing....I would do this all at once an pay attention to how you are taking it all apart.
Thank you thank you thank you! I got a bit so stuck all the hammering and blowtorching couldn't remove it. Good thing I came across your video and then your site. For eight dollars the part came in three days and my Makita driver is like new fixed. Piece of cake.
just tried it and it works, one thing you did not able to show is that the trigger mechanism must line up otherwise it will only turn one way, (with forward but no reverse and vise versa). I have to pull out the trigger a little bit just enough to line up to a small U shape part of the mechanism that will translate to froward and reverse of the operation....Other than that, it is very helpful video. Thanks a lot
where can i purchase the ball bearings that lock the bits in the collet? my retaining ring popped off while i was using my craftsman impact driver and the washer, spring, collet, and bit flew out. I was able to find everything to put it back together and once assembled, noticed that I had lost the ball bearings!
HELP! I have aligned my transmission and motor three times, careful to align the back housing with the end cap, checked the transmission for binding (it's not) set all housings as correct as i possibly can, looked the motor top to bottom 3 times. The motor has very little time on it so it is not worn, at all. Brushes are like new. When all put together, as true as possible, the motor seems bound and will not turn. The battery is strong. Please advise me on what I might be doing wrong. It is a simple repair so this is frustrating me to no end. Thank You for your consideration.
+Steven Parnell Of coarse, after writing to you about my frustration, the fourth assembly proved to be the successful one. I believe my trouble was that the bottom of the bearing, on the motor where it mates with the transmission was not seated true which pushed everything out of alignment. I took the motor shaft completely out and mated it with the transmission, then reassembled, careful to make sure the brush holder, the fan piece and the rest were seated in there respective areas. works like it's suppose to now. Thanks for the anvil replacement tutorial. I too used a short bit that got lodged in for good. I started to drill it out, but after the second bit broke, I found it easier to follow your instructions with a new replacement part. Thanks Again.....
+Steven Parnell Hi Steven, Sorry about my delay in getting back to you. I'm glad to her you were able to finish your repair successfully. Let me know if I can help you with anything else in the future.

Life saving. Thank you.
What brand and model is your tool box (bag)

maybe grease up the planetary gears while you are at it
Will this bring back the torque on my Makita impact driver? I feel like it's not as "impactful" as it used to be.
Well done
