Clockwise to unscrew, anti-clockwise to screw on as it's a left hand thread. Very helpful video as the Milwaukee instructions seem woefully inadequate.
Very well explained video! I recently purchased a wire wheel attachment I will use to grind out Bermuda grass and weeds out of the cracks in my driveway and sidewalks, but will put the bump head back in place when I'm done. A quick look today left me puzzled on the removal process but with your help it will be a snap! Again, very well explained! Two thumbs way up! 👍 👍
Thank you so much for this EASY yet detailed video. I had been wanting to replace my Milwaukee trimmer head, yet I didnt know how or what other quality replacement head would fit it. Your video and recommendation worked perfectly!! You're a life saver :)
Thanks so much!!! I walked out into my garage and found the tool to put into the hole immediately!----because I never put anything up in the first place; so it was where I laid it down when I unpacked the trimmer. SO GLAD I found this video!
Just changed my head to a weed thrasher its the best trimmer head I have ever used no string to tangle or run out. You have two very thick plastic cutters that take about 10 seconds to replace. I have this same head on my echo gas trimmer for years and has never let me down and its very cheap to purchase about 15 bucks for the trimmer head and like 7 bucks for 24 replacement heads
Thank you for posting this video. I couldn't figure out how to lock the shaft from spinning to replace my trimmer head on my Milwaukee weed eater. The manual doesn't show how to do this. After I watched this video, it was easy to replace. Thanks so much!
The advance mechanism on the Milwaukee Easy Load head wears out quickly, I replaced mine twice in a season (yes, I always tapped on grass as recommended). I've been wanting to replace the head on my M18 with a different brand for some time, but didn't know which one to try. Thanks for the information - very helpful. Much appreciated!
Great video! As always, I toss the instructions before I need to replace/upgrade. I would’ve totally buggered up the threads spinning it the opposite direction. Thank you!
Thanks and that is easy method to replace my Milwaukee trimmer head. Like my trimmer but hate the factory head as the factory trimmer line binds inside and does not feed.
Same situation! That's what lead me to this video! Lol. From the minute I took it out of the box and put it together, I've never been able to use it successfully. Within a few minutes, the whole mechanism just flies off and line goes everywhere.
I’m a woman and pretty useless with tools and lawn equipment in general. This video was super helpful and I was able to replace my trimmer head in about 2 minutes. Thanks!
Thanks. I just swapped the head out on my trimmer. I found a very simple replacement head that uses cut pieces of trimmer string. More simple and reliable than the auto feed.
Thanks for taking the time to explain the process, record it, edit it and upload it. You're a better man than I am for doing that - I often learn how to do something, think about doing a write-up or video, and then never do it. Somewhere in this comment thread I'm sure someone has already said something to this effect, but your presentation could be more succinct and to the point. It took a while to get into the actual how-to, and I'm guessing that the down votes were from people who have a short span of attention, lol. (but hey, this is 3 years old and I haven't been to your channel before) That all aside, your video was a heck of a lot faster for me than doing all the research to figure it out. Thanks again!
Thank you good job I just bought a Milwaukee head trimmer and the existing head was different all I needed was the I didn’t change the whole thing ,good job
When you use it for awhile, it'll build up grass, dirt around the inside band that the string holder goes back into ,to release more string you have to take it apart to clean the build up out. I'm just trying to help if yours does that. It took me forever to figure it out.
Is this the quick load Husqvarna head or their basic head that you have to take apart to reload string ? If the s is the basic head can I replace with a rapid reload head as easily the same as you showed ? Thanks so much for doing this video. I have the Milwaukee trimmer and the Makita 36 volt trimmer and both the outer plastic head cover breaks really easily. I bought the upgraded Makita quick reload head but it is hard to turn to load string. I have been looking at the Husqvarna 520ilx and the 325 . Any feed back would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to figure out what the best tool to trim with. I also purchased two Makita 21" mowers , the side discharge comes off very easily while mowing. My gas Toro mowers work better. Cheers
This is the basic head you have to take apart and restring. i found in my experience that this head is one of the best i've used. I haven't used a ton of other ones though. But even taking it apart and winding it is pretty simple and straight forward. Easy. i have not found any trimmer head that is quick load or winds that actually functions very well as a string trimmer head and the string winding function works well too. Not sure if one that does both well even exist. So I don't mind taking a few minutes to wind some string every now and then to get a good quality head on the trimmer. Definitely agree with you the key to 21 inch mower the side discharge definitely comes off easy that's definitely something they should fix I believe. I just stopped using it and just do more mulching or bagging when I need to. I actually haven't had that issue too much only until recently when does more rubbing up against some brush on the side.
Question: The metal piece that you say to clean is that supposed to spin? After I install the head and turn it on it sounds really rattle-ly because that metal part spins and the head doesn’t sit all the way but I’ve tightened as much as possible & there is a 1mm gap. I have an Echo replacement head Thx G .
Thanks! I sell Milwaukee products, but was horrified when there was a random metal bar in the replacement trimmer head. WTF is this for and why is there no instructions in the packaging it came in?
Question is I have that Milwaukee trimmer and only used it a couple times! But I just seem to not get much line out when I bump it in the grass with that head. Any pointers? I am used to the auto feed ones or gas bump heads that are on stihl and husq products. I would rather give this a shot and not buy a new head after a couple trimmings
josh robinson did you check the line in the head? Many times the lines get stuck in the head because of overlapping of windings. Try taking the line out then re winding it.
Hey man what grease do you put in your milwaukee trimmer? They say to put Milwaukee Type Y grease but its 15 dollars plus 15 dollars to ship. There has to be a grease that is basically the same thing just generic.
I've always used the Stihl gearbox Grease in my string trimmers. one such as: amzn.to/2z411Py . The main thing really is to grease it period (most people won't do), and to use a high temperature lithium based grease. As long as you use a good high temp lithium based grease, you'll be good.
@@tyroune2222 Awesome! I can't wait to replace the OEM head on my Mil Quik-Lok string trimmer, it vibrates too much on the high speed setting. Thank you again!
In my opinion yes. It feels better. But I’ve been using the husqvarna heads for years. But they don’t have the quick wind function the milwaukee head has.
Can you replace the stock Milwaukee String Trimmer head with any universal trimmer head? The knob on mine gets stuck when trying to let out additional line and I'm looking to replace it. I guess I could just get the one used in the video as you have proven that it works, but just curious. Thanks!
@@4thewinak If I find a blade with standard thread, do you think I would need some kind of conversion kit so the blade fits? Milwaukee doesn't have a conversion kit out for this
Are you sure you’re turning it the correct direction? Get a long metal shaft like a long breaker bar or something like that and use it as leverage through the clip holes on the head .
@@4thewinak That was my thought, but it didn't do anything to get it off. I figured it out, total oversight by me. He put the head on without the plate that goes in between, so it was just stuck and wouldn't spin. I used some needle nosed plier vice grips on the middle screw to hold it in place and was able to muscle it off. I would use the ones it comes with. It's a fine head, works well. nothing really wrong with it. Use it until it wears out, then replace it. That way you get the most use out of the tool.

If my stock trimmer head is feeding too fast with out bumping, does that mean the head is toasted?
Maybe you are unknowing tapping it. Or maybe the plastic tabs on the inside of the head have worn out.

What size is the left hand nut in the head? I'm thinking of attaching a Razor Maxx 12580 to mine for some brush cutting.
