You really need to have a sit down with a few professional aviators about how to deal with criticism. A TEM (threat and error management) course and CRM (Crew Resource Management) course would serve you well. You will ALWAYS meet more experienced pilots, guys with more money, more ideas and better ways of handling situations, live with it. Keep quiet and listen up. B747-400, A330, A340, B757, B777-300ER IRE/TRE 30,000 hours +’ Air Force trained, combat time.
Thanks for the feedback Mark, I have no problem having more training and taking more courses. In fact so far out of almost 400 hours of flying, 350 is Dual with multiple CFII’s. However I really also have no issue with criticism. I went through medical residency. We were criticized and yelled at 12-20 hours a day everyday. If I was worried about criticism I’d never post a video of myself making errors and being vulnerable etc. I have a group of well established pilots that fly with me and I listen to all of them and their feedback. on a daily basis. That’s useful criticism. The rest of the internet stuff is more of a parody/joke for me. Thanks again for watching and that’s super bad ass being in the Air Force. I’m going up in an L39 shortly for 4 days and will be making some awesome content.
Trolls and critique are part of the game, filter out the fluff, ignore it and do what makes you happy. I thought I'd add my 2 bits to the "do you have the field in sight" issue. It's ATS "code" for "can you provide your own separation" da all you have to say is "negative" and the prerogative remains with them to vector and ensure separation. They work for you. Your taxes pay their salaries and you're the customer. If you're unhappy with the service provided, file a grievance with the FAA. Simple. If you'd like to talk, let me know.
Thanks Mark, In all honesty the controller was creating so much confusion and a sense of panic in me that I started to make more errors. One of those was saying we had the field in sight. Because I was being vectored the wrong way and told that I was blowing through final when I wasn’t, I was almost thinking that my GPS was showing me at the wrong location. I did not know what El Monte Airport looked like from the sky and I looked down and saw Bracket and at that point I said yes we have the filed in sight while it was the wrong field. This was a great learning experience for me overall. It’s unusual for me to crack under pressure but when I’m flying everything is so new to me that I’m second guessing myself and the controller had me in circles in my head. Remember that essentially in about 12 months I went from never flying a plane to getting my PPL, IFR, and a Kodiak. It’s quite a bit to take in. I’m 99.9% certain most of the trolls making comments online never made it that far in 12 months. In Fact talking to pilots, I actually haven’t met anyone yet that did. And regarding the controller and FAA, I’m not looking to file grievances etc. I was more looking to actually figure out what happened to try and make some sense of the flight. I saw your video on your ATC experience and then saw Rich's analysis of it. His perspective shows you were spot on in your thinking at the time. It's too bad there are so many people who try to second guess someone's experiences without taking the time to truly investigate all the facts. It is easy to jump to conclusions. Flying, like medicine, is a unique combination of learned complex theory and its practical application, first under intense scrutiny and guidance by those who have gone before, and later through interactions with your peers. I applaud your good-natured approach to dealing with this ATC scenario and your approach to flying and learning aviation overall! In your flight training/aircraft purchase journey did you ever sense any nervousness from people because of your Muslim name? I've been doing some flight training recently and although no one said anything openly (well, except for the doc who did my third-class medical), I sometimes felt instructors were reluctant to fly with me because I'm Muslim.
Unfortunately racism is a reality. So many people have their own issues that they can’t handle and putting others down etc makes them feel better. Just look at some of the comments I get from people on this channel who can’t handle the fact that I’ve accomplished something they haven’t. I just choose to surround myself with people that are like minded and not worried about the color of my skin or name or religion etc.
