I feel like influencers get cut way less slack than brands whose CEOs are less well-known. Maybe because there's an obvious person to blame? Love this video as always.
At least in my country, if the nameless CEOs hire celebrity ambassadors to represent the brand and the brand runs into controversy, people will react negatively against the celebrity and sometimes they can be sued too! So I guess it is more, if someone's reputation or image is used to sell a brand, then the flip side is when the brand does something bad, that reputation or image gets tarnished. And it's not like those brands don't get a bad rap, just that it's not pinpointed to a person. As long as any of these brands (both anon and influencer owned) stay clear of further controversies and remain at an accessible price point (and accessible at all!), people would forget and buy!
Great monologue about people choosing to support the brands that they feel comfortable with. Everyone's moral compass is configured a bit differently and that's ok. I think the most important thing in this conversation is spreading awareness and making it easier for consumers to know what kind of brand they're supporting. Like you said, the average consumer doesn't have time to be a pointdexter about the history of brands. Content creators should definitely endeavor to help consumers in this regard.

I must say, I have been in love with the Wishful moisturizer. It’s so beautiful. I had been dealing with seborrheic dermatitis around my nose, and this moisturizer has been amazing. Keeps me moisturized all day.
I get seborrheic dermatitis around my nose too 😩 maybe I'll have to try that moisturizer when I run out of mine! So far I just use my ketoconazole shampoo in the nose area sometimes.

Thank you again for acknowledging again that spending "ethically" isn't affordable for everyone. I try to buy cruelty free but I have to make exceptions when the cheaper more effective product is from a brand that isn't. You can align your purchases with your values when you can afford the higher price on smaller brands.

I also was PLEASANTLY surprised by the Summer Friday's mineral SPF! I got a sample on a whim. I have tan skin and sensitive eyes. It had no white cast or sting! I'm glad you approved too
Thank you for saying this! Naturium's launch scandal was years ago and unlike other brands, they didn't actually harm any of their customers or promote hate/ discrimination etc. And immediately after the mistake, they stopped and never did it again. If someone doesn't want to support them or buy their products, that's totally OK. But it's super hypocritical to constantly be calling out Naturium's history (probably because of Susan's status as a popular internet face), but ignoring companies like The Ordinary, Neutrogena, etc etc etc
Personally it wasn’t just the launch that made me feel some type of way. It’s the fact that they include glutathione (a skin whitener popular in Asia) in their products that makes me not want to buy from them. But to each their own. :)
@@julia_6924 To each their own! I don't think anyone should be forced to use a product with an ingredient or by a brand they don't like. I totally get the negative uses/connotations of glutathione, but it's also a good anti-aging peptide and antioxidant. Good for wrinkles, and the same properties that make it popular for whitening skin also are good for people with hyperpigmentation.
Genuinely not trying to be rude, but I think that saying Naturium made a mistake and then never made it again is a bit misleading since what had happened was Susan not disclosing that she was owner of the brand while promoting it on her channel and then saying things like “they sent it to me” and acting as if she had no knowledge of it. Once it was announced as her brand it became impossible for her to repeat the same mistake because everyone knew it was her brand by then, so it actually doesn’t really mean that she’s learned from the mistake since she could only launch the brand and announce her involvement the one time. For me, it was the way she handled it afterwards that put me off of wanting to support her and while I do agree there’s lots of hypocrisy in what people choose to be outraged over, I still think the way she handled everything in such a dismissive, dishonest and rude way showed me more than the actual situation did in the first place.
@@Lizzie-ve7kt Totally agree with and respect what you're saying. True, it was a mistake that they could only ever make once. And it's totally OK if how it was handled put you off the brand. (For example, I'll never trust Mario Badescu after they physically injured so many people and never took responsibility.) I just think it isn't fair to criticize or scold people who use the brand, especially new users who have no knowledge about the scandal when the brand was founded, especially since their products are generally accessible, affordable, and well-formulated and they haven't had any other scandals in the past few years. It all comes down to personal buying ethics.
@okashi10 oh absolutely, I agree that it’s ridiculous to shame others for using the brand, my only issue has been in the past people have excused Susan herself for actions and have played it down. When I was small and I had swollen knees or ankles for falling down while playing outside, my great grandmother crushed a bit the cabbage leaves and made a compress with the leaves inside and took down the pain and the swelling quite quickly. So yes for the cabbage 🥬

i find it annoying how everyone wants to be the most ethical person ever, in our current state, that’s literally impossible. every company has something unethical about it, just avoid things that are really important to you and just use what works
You perfectly verbalized my thoughts on Naturium. I feel like it was a poor decision at launch that was unrightfully put on the same level some ableist, racist, or homophobic behaviors of other companies. I’m happy to see the amazing success of the brand, and I’ve found some personal holy grail products within the line. If I had to criticize them, I’d say that some of their products seem redundant, just for the sake of launching a new product, and they should be careful to not oversaturate their brand.
I was gifted the wishful honey balm and it's nice! Not my everyday moisturizer but love it for no makeup days when going out for errands. Always get compliments on my skin when wearing this stuff.

Love the Niacinamide Cleansing Gelee and the Soo Good toner pads but didn't know they had a smooth side. Haven't tried the other products. Just bought a small bottle of Youth to the People green cleanser because I was curious about it.

That Summer Fridays sunscreen is the one I was going to try next!! It looks perfect for me from every review I've seen so far - a mineral sunscreen with a nice finish that won't take a million years to rub in and won't wash me out OR make me yellow. I wasn't ever expecting you to talk about it because, y'know. Mineral sunscreens aren't really your thing. Imagine my surpriiiise.

While naturium's launch was definitely questionable and rightfully caused some upset, it seems like one of the few 'scandals' were there was genuinely no malice behind what happened, it was just an unfortunate lack of perspective

I have been using the Summer Friday sunscreen for about a month and I love it! It isn't as thick as a lot of other sunscreens which I really enjoy so that if I have it on my neck my hair doesn't stick to it and look greasy.

I was so anti nivea for so long. I didn’t use it for 16 years and I got some body lotion in my stocking for Christmas and I didn’t want to waste it. Now it’s basically all I use for body lotion. I won’t go back to having body acne. God forgive me 😬

I think with Susan Yara it was her hypocrisy that made me not want to ever purchase her brand. Honestly, it’s the way she handled the situation even more so than the situation itself that completely turned me off to her. She had built up a reputation for “honest” reviews and then deceived her audience by pretending she had no involvement with her brand. Plus her shadiness goes further than many know as she even pretended the brand had given her a discount code to use that she shared with her Facebook group. But it really was the fact that she handled it in such a horrible way by denying any wrongdoing, crying on camera about how “haters” ruined her launch and then not only deleting critical (genuinely not even that negative and definitely not hateful) comments on her video before then privatizing said video only a few months later. I think when influencers gain success by critiquing the industry and building an audience that trusts their opinions, it’s definitely going to result in more outrage because most of us don’t have any previous knowledge or feelings toward a brand’s CEO and we don’t have expectations of them, whereas an influencer builds an audience of people who have watched their videos and felt as if they’ve gotten to understand their values so when they then do something that goes against everything they’ve been saying, it’s even worse because it’s not only dishonest it’s hypocritical as well and the whole reason that influencer has so much success is directly because of their audience so yeah I think they do have more of a responsibility not to destroy that trust when it’s what has led to their success. Anyways, the whole Susan Yara debacle made me avoid her brand but I honestly unsubscribed and don’t watch her videos anymore.

@@soniak2269 am just a ex-employee of 4 years who was Harassed for 2 years straight by management. Reported things to HR, Corporate, and DOP but nothing was done about it. So I told them I will using my vacation hours and I needed a break (mind you i had 2 weeks worth of hours) but then they took that and basically fired me! Tried to get unemployment and they blocked me from that getting that cause they told them that I Voluntarily decided to quit. When I didn't smh.

I want to try the Q10 peptides serum. I love the selfless by Hyram moisturizer in the summer and the face wash all year round! Some of the other active serums are too mild for me but they feel nice.
ive been using selfless centella n green tea, peptide + ginger, and the niacinamide n maracuja for a while and i like them. for ppl who like their stuff to pack a punch, selfless may feel like it isnt doing much. that said, it's very gentle, it's not gonna hurt ya, and it fits in very well with current routines where you wont really have to worry abt the chemicals clashing or cancelling each other out. definitely worth my money!
None of the products were the right fit for me -- too gentle, and the packaging felt flimsy. But they weren't bad and they're definitely nice for teens and folks with more sensitive skin.
She basically went against FTC guidelines by not disclosing she was the owner of the brand when she started promoting it in her videos. There are multiple videos where she talks about the brand as "they" and acts fake surprised at the price point and formulations. Her launch video also contradicts her apology video on many points - such as whether she was the official partner/owner of the brand at launch. There are several videos going into detail about the whole shebang.
That Summer Fridays mineral sunscreen felt GREAT on my skin but it BROKE me out so bad in a couple of days. A lot of people in the reviews sections of online stores seemed to have experienced the same thing.
Had the same experience! It was a beautiful, gorgeous texture and no cast (I’m African American) but the next day I woke up with crazy allergic reaction. So sad because the formula is so lovely. Had the same experience with Versed sunscreen so maybe there’s some ingredient overlap
@@Undefinedinc I’m so sorry that happened to you. I’ve gone back to using the Skinceuticals tinted sunscreen that I’ve been using for the past couple of years. The texture isn’t as silky smooth as the Summer Fridays one but I’ve had zero problems with it. It could work for you too!

I have no idea nutrium had a bad launch lol. I just like their products. I travel a lot for work and they’re in target every where so if i ever need a re up it’s good quality that’s right there lol.
She lied that was pretty much it lol. I did stop watching her videos and supporting her, just because lying is part of my moral compass issue. I was okay when she lied for the launch, but then she did another video trying to defend herself and lied about everything again! Like ma’am, why? Your product is great just be honest. I forgave and forgot the first lies, when you continue to lie for no reason then I’m just going to move on, because what else are you lying about? Then it came out how she started talking smack about ordinary to promote her own brand on her facebook group. That was my last thing. I need to be able to trust you if I am coming for education. Her and Hyram have been proven to take money from brands and not disclose it. So ingredients that they hate on other products, they’ll promote for a paycheck. And yes, I have not used Good Genes since the Sunday Riley scandal came out. I try to be a forgiving person, but I don’t like being lied to. I can forgive a lot, but lying especially from someone you are trying to gain knowledge from is not good.

I feel like some of these indie brands that have public faces on them actually pay more attention to quality. They have smaller product ranges and a reputation to keep so they can really care about getting their formulations, packaging, finish, etc right. For example, brands like Stratia and Krave that will spend over a year focusing on developing just one product.
Well, neither are "sustainable" really, unless they're specifically made to be. Recently, there has been a lauch of sheetmasks/toner pads that can completely dissolve in water, and so they are, in a way, sustainable. But really, by default, unless the company producing the product have found a sustainable method to gather materials, produce it, and discard it once used, then a product just isn't sustainable... Aka, the majority of everything. The only way to make it better yourself, is to throw toner pads/cotton pads out properly instead of tossing them in any mixed trash can. I really appreciate your talk about using or not using companies that for us are problematic. Every person has different moral compass. For me the most important thing is that I won't use things that are not cruelty free. Because caged animals are not able to defend themselves, and we owe them protection. Humans can defend themselves. While I think it's extremely problematic that people on such high positions are racist, homophobic, ableist or other terrible things, in my moral compass it's more important to protect those who can't protect themselves. Just my two cents.
Hyaluronic acid is irritating for some people, and retinol is not safe for use during pregnancy, so that's probably why these other ingredients are being presented as alternatives.
I'm confused about the sheer volume of products out there! There's so much. I use elf holy hydration makeup melting balm, followed by Neutrogena HydroBoost gel cleanser. Then I'm lost. I've been using an eye cream by La Roche Posay, a Revitalift Retinal, and Olay SPF moisturizer. Is this ok or too much or not enough?! It's frustrating because I need acne fighting for my tzone and anti-aging, since I'm 47.... 🤔
U might want to move the retinal to night time, followed by a ceramide moisturiser? Morning since you have acne, you can use a niacinamide serum (controls sebum) and/or salicylic acid toner/serum/face wash before that, retain the SPF especially if it's SPF 30 or more. Otherwise your routine maybe perfect, minimal with sunblock and retinol is the good!

At least in my country, if the nameless CEOs hire celebrity ambassadors to represent the brand and the brand runs into controversy, people will react negatively against the celebrity and sometimes they can be sued too! So I guess it is more, if someone's reputation or image is used to sell a brand, then the flip side is when the brand does something bad, that reputation or image gets tarnished.
And it's not like those brands don't get a bad rap, just that it's not pinpointed to a person. As long as any of these brands (both anon and influencer owned) stay clear of further controversies and remain at an accessible price point (and accessible at all!), people would forget and buy!
Great monologue about people choosing to support the brands that they feel comfortable with. Everyone's moral compass is configured a bit differently and that's ok. I think the most important thing in this conversation is spreading awareness and making it easier for consumers to know what kind of brand they're supporting. Like you said, the average consumer doesn't have time to be a pointdexter about the history of brands. Content creators should definitely endeavor to help consumers in this regard.

I must say, I have been in love with the Wishful moisturizer. It’s so beautiful. I had been dealing with seborrheic dermatitis around my nose, and this moisturizer has been amazing. Keeps me moisturized all day.
I get seborrheic dermatitis around my nose too 😩 maybe I'll have to try that moisturizer when I run out of mine! So far I just use my ketoconazole shampoo in the nose area sometimes.

I try to buy cruelty free but I have to make exceptions when the cheaper more effective product is from a brand that isn't. Thank you for saying this! Naturium's launch scandal was years ago and unlike other brands, they didn't actually harm any of their customers or promote hate/ discrimination etc. And immediately after the mistake, they stopped and never did it again. If someone doesn't want to support them or buy their products, that's totally OK. But it's super hypocritical to constantly be calling out Naturium's history (probably because of Susan's status as a popular internet face), but ignoring companies like The Ordinary, Neutrogena, etc etc etc
Personally it wasn’t just the launch that made me feel some type of way. It’s the fact that they include glutathione (a skin whitener popular in Asia) in their products that makes me not want to buy from them. But to each their own. :)
@@julia_6924 To each their own! I don't think anyone should be forced to use a product with an ingredient or by a brand they don't like. I totally get the negative uses/connotations of glutathione, but it's also a good anti-aging peptide and antioxidant. Good for wrinkles, and the same properties that make it popular for whitening skin also are good for people with hyperpigmentation.
Genuinely not trying to be rude, but I think that saying Naturium made a mistake and then never made it again is a bit misleading since what had happened was Susan not disclosing that she was owner of the brand while promoting it on her channel and then saying things like “they sent it to me” and acting as if she had no knowledge of it. Once it was announced as her brand it became impossible for her to repeat the same mistake because everyone knew it was her brand by then, so it actually doesn’t really mean that she’s learned from the mistake since she could only launch the brand and announce her involvement the one time. For me, it was the way she handled it afterwards that put me off of wanting to support her and while I do agree there’s lots of hypocrisy in what people choose to be outraged over, I still think the way she handled everything in such a dismissive, dishonest and rude way showed me more than the actual situation did in the first place.

(For example, I'll never trust Mario Badescu after they physically injured so many people and never took responsibility.) I just think it isn't fair to criticize or scold people who use the brand, especially new users who have no knowledge about the scandal when the brand was founded, especially since their products are generally accessible, affordable, and well-formulated and they haven't had any other scandals in the past few years. It all comes down to personal buying ethics.

You perfectly verbalized my thoughts on Naturium. I feel like it was a poor decision at launch that was unrightfully put on the same level some ableist, racist, or homophobic behaviors of other companies. I’m happy to see the amazing success of the brand, and I’ve found some personal holy grail products within the line. If I had to criticize them, I’d say that some of their products seem redundant, just for the sake of launching a new product, and they should be careful to not oversaturate their brand.
I was gifted the wishful honey balm and it's nice! Not my everyday moisturizer but love it for no makeup days when going out for errands. Always get compliments on my skin when wearing this stuff.

That Summer Fridays sunscreen is the one I was going to try next!! It looks perfect for me from every review I've seen so far - a mineral sunscreen with a nice finish that won't take a million years to rub in and won't wash me out OR make me yellow. It isn't as thick as a lot of other sunscreens which I really enjoy so that if I have it on my neck my hair doesn't stick to it and look greasy.

I think with Susan Yara it was her hypocrisy that made me not want to ever purchase her brand. Honestly, it’s the way she handled the situation even more so than the situation itself that completely turned me off to her. She had built up a reputation for “honest” reviews and then deceived her audience by pretending she had no involvement with her brand. Plus her shadiness goes further than many know as she even pretended the brand had given her a discount code to use that she shared with her Facebook group. But it really was the fact that she handled it in such a horrible way by denying any wrongdoing, crying on camera about how “haters” ruined her launch and then not only deleting critical (genuinely not even that negative and definitely not hateful) comments on her video before then privatizing said video only a few months later. I think when influencers gain success by critiquing the industry and building an audience that trusts their opinions, it’s definitely going to result in more outrage because most of us don’t have any previous knowledge or feelings toward a brand’s CEO and we don’t have expectations of them, whereas an influencer builds an audience of people who have watched their videos and felt as if they’ve gotten to understand their values so when they then do something that goes against everything they’ve been saying, it’s even worse because it’s not only dishonest it’s hypocritical as well and the whole reason that influencer has so much success is directly because of their audience so yeah I think they do have more of a responsibility not to destroy that trust when it’s what has led to their success. Anyways, the whole Susan Yara debacle made me avoid her brand but I honestly unsubscribed and don’t watch her videos anymore.

So I told them I will using my vacation hours and I needed a break (mind you i had 2 weeks worth of hours) but then they took that and basically fired me! Tried to get unemployment and they blocked me from that getting that cause they told them that I Voluntarily decided to quit. When I didn't smh.

A reusable eye mask sounds great but the shape of the Dieux masks don't appeal to me, I would want mine to have a greater curve and a longer point so it covers more of my eye area...

I want to try the Q10 peptides serum. I love the selfless by Hyram moisturizer in the summer and the face wash all year round! Some of the other active serums are too mild for me but they feel nice.
ive been using selfless centella n green tea, peptide + ginger, and the niacinamide n maracuja for a while and i like them. for ppl who like their stuff to pack a punch, selfless may feel like it isnt doing much. that said, it's very gentle, it's not gonna hurt ya, and it fits in very well with current routines where you wont really have to worry abt the chemicals clashing or cancelling each other out. definitely worth my money!
None of the products were the right fit for me -- too gentle, and the packaging felt flimsy. But they weren't bad and they're definitely nice for teens and folks with more sensitive skin.

She basically went against FTC guidelines by not disclosing she was the owner of the brand when she started promoting it in her videos. There are multiple videos where she talks about the brand as "they" and acts fake surprised at the price point and formulations.
Her launch video also contradicts her apology video on many points - such as whether she was the official partner/owner of the brand at launch.
There are several videos going into detail about the whole shebang.

That Summer Fridays mineral sunscreen felt GREAT on my skin but it BROKE me out so bad in a couple of days. A lot of people in the reviews sections of online stores seemed to have experienced the same thing.
Had the same experience! It was a beautiful, gorgeous texture and no cast (I’m African American) but the next day I woke up with crazy allergic reaction. So sad because the formula is so lovely. Had the same experience with Versed sunscreen so maybe there’s some ingredient overlap
@@Undefinedinc I’m so sorry that happened to you. I’ve gone back to using the Skinceuticals tinted sunscreen that I’ve been using for the past couple of years. The texture isn’t as silky smooth as the Summer Fridays one but I’ve had zero problems with it. It could work for you too!

I have no idea nutrium had a bad launch lol. I just like their products. I travel a lot for work and they’re in target every where so if i ever need a re up it’s good quality that’s right there lol.
She lied that was pretty much it lol. I did stop watching her videos and supporting her, just because lying is part of my moral compass issue. I was okay when she lied for the launch, but then she did another video trying to defend herself and lied about everything again! Like ma’am, why? Your product is great just be honest. I forgave and forgot the first lies, when you continue to lie for no reason then I’m just going to move on, because what else are you lying about?
Then it came out how she started talking smack about ordinary to promote her own brand on her facebook group. That was my last thing. I need to be able to trust you if I am coming for education. Her and Hyram have been proven to take money from brands and not disclose it. So ingredients that they hate on other products, they’ll promote for a paycheck. And yes, I have not used Good Genes since the Sunday Riley scandal came out. I try to be a forgiving person, but I don’t like being lied to. I can forgive a lot, but lying especially from someone you are trying to gain knowledge from is not good.

I feel like some of these indie brands that have public faces on them actually pay more attention to quality. They have smaller product ranges and a reputation to keep so they can really care about getting their formulations, packaging, finish, etc right. For example, brands like Stratia and Krave that will spend over a year focusing on developing just one product.

Well, neither are "sustainable" really, unless they're specifically made to be. Recently, there has been a lauch of sheetmasks/toner pads that can completely dissolve in water, and so they are, in a way, sustainable. But really, by default, unless the company producing the product have found a sustainable method to gather materials, produce it, and discard it once used, then a product just isn't sustainable... Aka, the majority of everything.
The only way to make it better yourself, is to throw toner pads/cotton pads out properly instead of tossing them in any mixed trash can. Hope this answers your question !

I really appreciate your talk about using or not using companies that for us are problematic. Every person has different moral compass. For me the most important thing is that I won't use things that are not cruelty free. Because caged animals are not able to defend themselves, and we owe them protection. Humans can defend themselves. While I think it's extremely problematic that people on such high positions are racist, homophobic, ableist or other terrible things, in my moral compass it's more important to protect those who can't protect themselves. Just my two cents.
Hyaluronic acid is irritating for some people, and retinol is not safe for use during pregnancy, so that's probably why these other ingredients are being presented as alternatives.
I'm confused about the sheer volume of products out there! There's so much. I use elf holy hydration makeup melting balm, followed by Neutrogena HydroBoost gel cleanser. Then I'm lost. I've been using an eye cream by La Roche Posay, a Revitalift Retinal, and Olay SPF moisturizer. Is this ok or too much or not enough?! It's frustrating because I need acne fighting for my tzone and anti-aging, since I'm 47.... 🤔
U might want to move the retinal to night time, followed by a ceramide moisturiser? Morning since you have acne, you can use a niacinamide serum (controls sebum) and/or salicylic acid toner/serum/face wash before that, retain the SPF especially if it's SPF 30 or more. Otherwise your routine maybe perfect, minimal with sunblock and retinol is the good!
