The thing with this connector is.. It is a design flaw, i named it samsung's Bendgate. on this specitic connector, outer terminals gets loose, sometimes starts heating up. They get loose naturally, because there is no supporting structure for them, and they are poorly soldered. When they get loose, phone stops charging, because on the left is +5V_USB, on the right - ground. Its usually +5V_USB which gets loose and phone fails to charge. Quick test is to simply apply pressure to see if phone starts charging. If you disconnect this connector at any point, it will bend outwards, simply because of how its designed.. So if you ever disconnect this, YOU HAVE TO adress it, otherwise phone will simply stop charging in mere future. This exact issue applies for all of samsung's phones which has this connector, just a few to mention - A30S, A40, A70, A51, A70, S20FE.. easy fix is simply bending the side pins inwards and properly soldering them down so they cant move at all. I know it sounds dodgy, but so far i did somewhere around 200 of theese and none came back after the fix, while after replacing the connector, had almost all of them come back at some point. It is most common cause of "not charging" for a lot of samsung phones, even though technitians thinks its charging port, for that reason we firstly adress the connectors, because id say around 95% of the time its the connectors and not the cport. we have wrote a small post in IG for those interested, if what i can provide mode examples of this :) instagram.com/p/CGnpUPjDF-4/ @STS Telecom
I got a Galaxy A70 that came into my shop with the same FPC connector broken, but on the gold plate on the end... I decided to order a new one instead, however shipping that part here to Trinidad is at least 3 weeks lol. Great stuff as always.
No the data was not important on this. I occasionally get work from another repair shop in the next town over from me , he sent this to me unable to get the device to charge to test it any further. I put it under my scope and noticed the connector bent on the right as well as damaged after further inspection. That's when I reached out to STS as they have always done amazing work on iPhone's that I've sent in. As always great work Jason. Thank you kind sir. I always enjoy these videos, really enjoyed watching you work on a board that I sent in. Awesome stuff.
Good morning! I'm glad you like the video. Sometimes I hope that customers don't take things I say too seriously in these videos.. lol Your devices are always well organized and labeled and they're always what they're supposed to be. Angie really appreciates those job ID stickers when checking them in & we very much appreciate your business! Also, I think at the end of this video, I believe that is your S8 laying on the bench as I'm discovering the S20 is locked. Thank you!
@@ststele you are more than welcome kind sir, and thank you. I never have to worry about the devices I send to you so it helps lessen the amount of stress involved in each outcome. I’m glad my stickers help, I know the work you do is very “mind” straining, having to go back and forth with the owner about clarifying what’s needed or requested waist our valuable time. I got the notification of your new video and saw the s20 FE label and chuckled allowed “ I wonder if that’s my board” lol. I never thought I would become so excited being indirectly involved in a RUclips video lol but it made my night, was to cool. Thank you.
When I used to work in warranty repair for Samsung, these screen cables would always detach on their own, and sometimes a new screen wouldn't fix it so we'd do a board swap. I never looked too much into it because when doing in-warranty repairs you just swap whatever and call it a day, but I think these connectors may just be a little jank. Maybe a similar story to the Pixel 4XL battery connector issue, although that was more obvious with what the issue was.
I encountered a lot of "loose connections" in Samsung phones. I'm actively working as a repair technician and many models like the A51, A40, A71 just to name a few have that same 78 pin connector and depending on the area where those pins are not making a good connection with the pads you may get different issues like charging (slow or not at all), display/touch problems, even bottom speaker.
I discovered this issue on my phone. I thought the screen was broken and charging port, I could squeeze with a small clamp and charge port started working. I tried getting data off but couldn't see screen to change option to file transfer etc. Bought a new screen replaced it.....turns out the pins for the fpc on bottom row to right had broken off and stuck in the flat cable....I am invested now so i need to get this fpc port fixed and get new cable White flag
I want you to know that you're the first one to tell me this! When this comment came across yesterday, I had not realized I said Apple instead of Samsung.. By the time a video makes it to RUclips, I've already watched it a lot during editing... I can't believe I never noticed it. LOL!
LOL - I said that on accident and then proceeded to listen to myself say it several times during editing but then didn't notice until it started popping up in the comments! RUclips is good stuff.
I also like watch your video of what you doing those jobs on repair. That’s make me want work like your job. I am deaf but I learn faster by self taught do want job like you do.. lol kenai Alaska here.. I just bought hot air iron soldering for starting do self training repair electronic stuff., You did excellent teacher of what i been watch your show. You awesome…. Smile.
Solder paste works good for these situations (leaded) . Allows pins to lay flat, either hot air or solder iron can be used. Try it out couple times on donor boards.
This is the same connector that is used in A40/A50/A70 series and the left side pin that you repaired is usually the weak point. My shop got this because the phones wouldn't charge and at one point I got like 15-20 per week. I actually also fixed the connectors but then they ended up failing on the other side so I just started to replace them.
I did an S20 Ultra display FPC today and it was also cracked long-ways. It was missing half of it where it had gotten stuck in the FPC side connector. Pretty much the same break as in this video. These connectors seem to be VERY brittle.
Never, ever, touch a socket that is under hot air. It's like touching a block of butter with a hot knife. You're super lucky you didn't deform the pins near where you touched it with your tweezers. Good job, regardless!
That connector is very long, to solder it I use the technique of filling the connector with flux in the center, so the plastic does not burn "it acts as a protection" then I warm it up. Usually more dense flux is needed.
Thank you! Around 2~3 months on these 0.1mm tips. The JS02 tip I use on the larger handle pretty much lasts indefinitely though. :-) I am all the time cleaning the micro-pencil tip in metal mesh -- I think that chews away at it faster.
Hey Jason , love your videos, i learned a lot from you. Just i wanted to know why you are now using KU tip when soldering the connector :) Of course it depends on how comfortable you are with it but at least you can give a try or may be you did and i missed that video? :S Have a healthy day, Cheers.
All A series of Samsung have most of these problems with bad connectors btw im sorry this guy that struggling with connector this wrong way just pass them all with blob...with more flux not one by one... Easy job then this... :)
I can never get the solder to melt before the part does. Not so much these FPC connectors, but ZIF connectors. Even if I put the part in the oven. Even with 138C paste
Repairing a non apple phone, yooow two timing swine :-D Even the rat would not two time apple :) That connector looked horrible to solder. One sneeze and the connector vanishes into a different universe, better known as the floor. :-D
This is the plug that never ends It goes on and on, my friends Somebody Started heating it; not knowing what it was And now they'll go on heating it Forever just because ... (repeat ad nauseum)
Not too sure there. Instead of 1 damaged pad to replace, you now have 600 solder joints that must mate with the upper and lower layers of the iPhone. It's easier to simply replace the entire lower board.
How do i reach your expertise and microsoldering expertise? Where to start? I'd love to do that kind of stuff. I replace cracked galsses on Samsung devices but this seems like a whole another level of skill.
First thought about that factory reset message was that the connector contained a unique hardware ID and swapping the connector triggered anti-repair logic.
Is this possible with a regular soldering iron and a craft microscope? I have this problem with my S20 FE in the UK and don't wanna spend £150 on a new motherboard. Also can you tell me where you found the replacement FPC connector?
That is really good to know! I think my next phone will be another galaxy S. I was thinking an S10 but the prices on the even older ones would make me appreciate it more. Also, I don't want to be walking around with a $200 screen in my pocket so I much prefer an older Samsung :-)
Great video!! I bought an Alienware Area 51m R1 and the connector for the LVDS on the RTX2080 is messed up...I don t know where to find a new one, any suggestions? Thank you
i m doing this job for 12 year so fool begin way never use soliber iron.just put good flux and push a little while heating and it just done don't need expensive hot gun station or microscope. put heat and air equal while taking out and putting it better in 6 n 6 heat and air
HI, I want to ask. If a phone got water damage, the repair shop said it was really bad, can it still be saved? I mean by transplant the chip from the old phone to new board? Does the chip itself can be short circuit if exposed to sea water?
Since posting this, I've learned that the customer was likely aware of the reset condition. Wicking the pads and just using the iron would have been much easier!

It's not apple so no. FRP reset is androids answer for phone theft data wipe. Someone has wiped the data without removing the google account.
LOL! This is hilarious bus sadly the way things are going! Hopefully we have some years before the connectors get keyed and paired. :D
