Raw, powerful, compassionate, real, honest, brutal and one if not the best story you have ever done Larry. Excellent work! I like that Mr. Young is a therapist and his work regarding PTSD is so needed. I hung on every word spoken and I’ll probably revisit this story many times over. And, yes, Larry, your work here is very important because you give the veteran from whichever war he served and fought in a voice and everyone needs to be able to be heard and hopefully to a degree healed. Thank you Mr. Young and thank you Larry.

Jay, many thanks for your kind words. They are greatly appreciated and very timely in my life right now. I believe I suffer from a form of PTSD after hearing all of these stories the past 20 years and now finding that there are very few if any people I can talk to about what I have heard and seen through the eyes and ears of my Veterans. I compare what I am experiencing to the war veteran who has seen human beings at their worse. Death, carnage, destruction, mutilation. I have heard about human beings at their worse and visualize every traumatic moment they share with me, and yet I have no one to talk to about it. Some days I feel like giving up. And then I receive a comment like yours. It has taken a real personal toll on my life and family, something most people watching my films have no idea. I suffer in silence daily!! I feel I am helping these Veterans bear the weight of their burdens. At times it is more than I can bear. My faith in God helps me through the difficult times but it would be nice to have someone on this earth to talk with also. I am sure I am exhibiting some of the same symptoms of PTSD these Veterans do. They call it secondary trauma and echo PTSD. Thanks for a listening ear.

I’ve been watching all of these lately because I am almost 59 years old (born and raised in the USA Massachusetts) and know almost nothing about the Vietnam war, other that what my dad (a Greek immigrant) told me about it. I even went to college ( in Massachusetts) and don’t know anything about it. Most left wing Americans (my age) don’t want to talk about it. God bless these men and women who suffered and died in this gorilla war. Sounds like many were drafted and thrown into it. Thank you for your service and those who gave their lives during this war, May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have you in Abraham’s bosom. Thank you for your service.

Oh my goodness. I am a 77 year old Marine, Vietnam era, and I have never heard such a poignant, eloquent and exact depiction of Vietnam, the role of our servicemen, and PTSD, the silent but potent disabler of people's minds.
I knew something strange was taking place in listening to Mitchell's initial dialogue only to realize that he is the real deal of a combat Marine and he is also a Psychology Phd who happens to be very effective. Although I never fought in direct combat, years later after my enlistment was over, I was accidentally shot and suffered a comminuted femur with a total femur reconstruction. Never knew why, to this day, I am very "shaky" about things but now have a better insight into my issue.
Thanks Mitchell for your sacrifice, service and dedication to our country and its warriors. God bless you and your work.

This was by far the best interview yet. Mr. Young thank you for your service, for opening up, and for your work with other combat vets. I am going to somehow convince my dad who is a Vietnam vet to watch this in hopes that he will open up to someone and possibly heal some. To my knowledge, he's never spoken to anyone about his time in Vietnam. All he will say when asked about it is "you don't want to know" and usually follow it up with something along the lines of "there are things I wish I didn't know" and his favorite thing to respond with is "best I can tell you is it's no fun dodging bullets" There are so many times over the years and even today you will catch him staring off into space, but can tell by his eyes he's back over there. I love my dad and would give anything for him to find some sort of peace before he passes. Again Thank you for everything you do and have done Mr. Young!

Listening to this interview was the most informative 1/2 hour I’ve listened to about Marines who served in Vietnam at a young age during 1966, 1967 . Mitchell was honest, nonjudgmental, informative about being trained as a Marine & while serving in the war used those skills .
As a counselor he uses these experiences to convey compassion to men who carried the scars of combat all these years. . My husband of 56 years served in the Marines as a UH 34 helicopter crew chief at Ky Ha & PhuBai , late 1966 through 1967 . After discharge he attended college eventually earning an MS in Mechanical Engineering. As husband & wife we’ve had to deal with his isolation & withdrawal with much compromise . I’d like to thank Mitchell Young for serving this country in the USMC & doing this interview . Also a thank you to Mr Cappetto for facilitating the interview. The salute at the end is very touching . God Bless all Veterans 🇺🇸

Mr. Young you are certainly one of the most unique interviews I've ever seen. Thank you for what you've done for people like myself. Each time I see one of Larry's videos, I'm reminded more and more how grateful I am and how much more people should appreciate what you sacrificed by going to Vietnam, and we can't thank you enough, as far as I'm concerned. My mother in law, told me some stories about my father in law. They didn't get together until years after he came home from the war, and he used to wake up screaming, and ready to kill her or anyone near him, in his dreams, he was in Vietnam, I can never understand what that was like. Albert Franco, he was my father in law, and he was a great guy. He was a medic in the war, and also became a POW. Welcome home Sir, and God bless you and your family.

@@VoicesofHistory No, I am sorry for not being more clear. My sister recently burned all his letters from my father to my mother over a 6 year period, without affording me the time to read them, at least. In doing so she wiped out a large portion of his history, that I wanted to preserve for my 3 sons and others. It's quite a mess, yet to be sorted. When I see these interviews, I think of how I should have recorded his history myself before he passed in 2002. He was a master sergeant , stationed all over the world, as a forward engine change hanger specialist for B 17's and B26, particularly in the North Africa campaign. He held a requisition card that would supersede generals to procure equipment and supplies, and he oversaw 100 men daily. He wrote mom every week, often with poems.

“Most of us are wounded before we ever get into the MC.” I was thinking this the entire time. I had my own event later in life that I thought caused PTSD, but I later realized my problems with adrenaline spikes, anger management, and poor stress management stemmed from early childhood. By the time that bad event came along as an adult, I was already primed for the poor reaction to it. I’m glad it’s starting to be understood. This man goes about dissecting it well.

@@VoicesofHistory many of us suffer in silence. I have told my mother a few things and it scared her to death. She doesn’t want to know anymore but now she understands better at why I do certain things. At times my own family is scared of me. People who have never been around violence or had to take human life can never understand what it’s about. My family watched me come home after I left my occupation and didn’t know me anymore. I was that empty shell, that angry unpredictable person that tried to reintegrate back into society but never was able to. I could never love anyone including myself. My ptsd started at a very young age. I was molested by a catholic priest and abused by others. So by continuing in what I did it sealed my fate with ptsd. I’m now disabled 100% by ptsd and other physical disabilities.

Twenty five years after returning from Vietnam, I wrote a poem. The poem was my therapy for my PTSD that was blossoming in my life at age 49. I told someone...I told ME. It helped me go on when all seemed black...the night terrors, the feeling if distrust in everyone around me, the startling sounds, the details of the events. It can be read at the Co. A, 227th AHB, 1st Cavalry website under 'stories'. It is titled "My Package". It helped me see that life goes on...with it or without it. Sure, I think about it nearly every day, BUT it doesn't hold me back much anymore. VN '69-70

    Hi Mr. Young..
My son is a Marine(19), so tha nk you for your service, pains, gains, your family. This past yr I lost my mom, had to leave a house a grew up in, find an apart, ship our son off to serve over seas. It was a hard dark time, I got help, and see light at the tunnels end. I'm always reminded of how I could've ended it..but realize now how it's been up to me. If I end it that's what I'll be knwn for but, if I chnge my outlook maybe I can help others by recognizing who they are. Everyday wherever I go I meet people whether at Costco/shoprite, shops, street, neighborhoods and call them by name and thnkng them.
SO THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AS A MARINE, WHEN YOU CAME HOME, THOSE TIME FINDING YOURSELF, AND SHARING THESE MEMORIES
