A studio desk with a synthesizer keyboard drawer (and how I use it to make music and videos)

- You liked my previous video on the Yamaha EX5 and Montage M8X, but you liked my desk even more. So here's a video answering some of my viewers' questions about that, plus a quick look at what's on my desk and how I use that stuff.
The desk is this one: thmn.to/thopro...

Some bands / artists I've been following for a long time are (among others) Massive Attack, Pink Floyd, Pet Shop Boys, Archive, A-Ha, Yes, Porcupine Tree, John Mellencamp, Jean-Michel Jarre, Metallica, Peter Gabriel and Perturbator. So my music will kind of sound like those (without ever reaching the greatness of those artists, of course). :-)
Wave bone great desk company I bought one when they first came out about four years ago
That's my desk! GOAT for tall dudes since you can move the modular keyboard tray out.
Thanks for watching! Yes I like this thing a lot, too. :-)
Cool setup! Really nice desk!
Thanks!
I like how unassuming much of that is. Of course, you have pretty high stuff such as the Montage and the Motor synth, and the desk itself is expensive, but you have no issue whatsoever in showing less expensive stuff as the Reface and some of the pedals. And you make music and good content with them, and you teach and help other people.
I'm getting tired of some channels that only review or showcase stuff far beyond people's reach, as if others couldn't make music with less than a Prophet 10, a Polybrute, a true Rhodes and a B3 at home.
Thanks. You can make good sounding music with almost anything, and I'm not trying to convince you to buy the expensive stuff. I just noticed so many people asked about this desk.
Regarding other RUclips synth enthusiasts, who can blame them? I think we all more or less grew up in a very specific time and we saw those great artists with their super cool instruments. We wanted to have that as well, but we couldn't because our parents wouldn't buy us that stuff. Now we're older, with kids, and this is the right time to finally buy that expensive synth, and then share with the world how wonderful that thing is (because your friends, kids and wife really don't want to be bothered with that) ;-)
Great studio tour! I can feel EX5 is sad sitting in the corner.
I feel George Harrison would have turned this sentiment into a great song back in his day. :-)
That looks amazing! Regarding the weight, I had a cheap rack on wheels many years ago and the metal rack frame was fine but the wheels eventually caved in under the weight, so maybe that's worh keeping an eye on.
Thanks for the heads up! I'll watch that closely.
good tune. good desk.
Ive got some big chunks of mdf....need to make something similar for the sy99
That sounds like a great idea! Please share some pictures when finished.
Love it
Thanks for watching!
Did the keyboard drawer thing with my hard rubbish Roland keyboard. Seriously, somebody had put a noughties Roland 66 note board on the nature strip for Monday's rubbish collection 2 blocks from home, and I was walking home from the station. Had 4 dodgey keys which were fixed with air in a can.
The drawer tray was a cut down wire shelf I scored on curbside rubbish, too. A couple of v-slot offcuts, some v wheels from a dead Ender 3 3D printer, a few petg printed parts, et voila!
Wow, that sounds so cool! I'd wish I'd find such stuff by the roadside (here, we have to make an appointment with the garbage collectors, and they'll come to pick up your stuff). Finding cool stuff rarely happens because of that.
@ we have the same system, but people often put their stuff out early. Also, I seem to have uncanny luck with this suff. Bikes, music bits, luggage suitable for road cases 😄
Is the montage really 32kg?😮
The M8X is - that's the one with the weighted wooden keyboard. The M6 and M7 are much lighter.
I have a similar setup and get frustrated with the lack of room for my knees. If I make the keyboard higher, the desktop is then too high. Does that desk help with that at all?
No, if that's a problem for you, then this desk will not solve it.
Same here. I made a desk with a big drawer for my Yamaha CK, but if my chair is at a good height for me, my knees hit the drawer. I can lower the chair, but then the upper part of the desk with an Opsix or a Deepmind is not at the optimal height.
Hi, what model miniPC do you use?
That's a "Higole Mini PC with touchscreen" (you should find it with that search term). Please don't buy this just for making music if you already own a Laptop or Tablet. ;-)
Dude... the Montage seems a bit low, yes?🎉
Yes, if you're a professional player and you want to practice for some hours a day, this setup isn't going to work. It's too low. However, for recording MIDI and creating sounds, it's fine (for me!).
@mr_floydst all good... just take care of your back n neck as you WILL be spending hours on this "beast". 😉
One of those days, you'll end up rubbing the sides of the synth against the bigger desk!
It might not happen if I'm careful with my axe, though. ;-)
