I sadly think it's overlooked so much now because it's a spec Oreca 07 class essentially. If they would have BOP'd the class batter then maybe it might warrant more attention. I'm sure Dallara, Ligier, & Riley would have liked that.
@@r35killa The problem is that the Oreca isn't necessarily faster than the other options. It's just SO much easier to set it up right for every available track that it's not worth putting in the extra effort into the other 3 to keep them at the same pace as the Orecas weekend after weekend.

@@r35killaWell you are in luck next year LMP2 is moving to a new generation of LMP2s, still a 1 engine class but will have chassis' the 4 LMDh chassis.
@maxb4085 I'm honestly ok with the one engine formula. It's kinda been that way for a decade now with Nissan being the previous dominate supplier. Same with LMP3 and the VK V8 (I heard that's going to a Toyota boosted unit though)
It’s crazy how the Garage 56 car even managed to pass an LMP car irl.
Tbf that was because the LMP2 car it overtook had a Bronze driver in and the G56 either had Mike Rockenfeller (the Le Mans distance record holder) or Jenson Button (F1 champion) in compared to the Bronze driver who is someone who is not a professional driver. Also during the race the Corvette GTE had a faster lap than the G56, the G56 however was faster in qualifying.
The LMP2 was driven by a Bronze driver who for all intents & purposes will not have the same level of confidence driving at night compared to gold let alone a platinum driver with lots of experience.
At the end of the day, it mostly comes down to the person behind the wheel

@@THEWINDTUNNEL That'll be a destruction, G56 is too heavy to be competitive against a Group C in anything with lots of corners, and the green hell has loads of them.
Both LMP2 and Garage 56 NASCAR Cars deserved tons of love due to how beautiful those cars are.

They're not quite that dramatic in real life, but it does make it easy to spot when the drivers have to lift in a Cup race.

F1 Frontrunner, or any F1 car? IIRC from a look into historical qualifying times I did a while back, late 70s USAC frontrunners could lap faster than some F1 backmarkers of the same era. Al Unser's pole lap for the 1977 Molson Diamond Indy would have qualified him 21st on the grid for that year's Canadian Grand Prix, ahead of 7 F1 cars.
In terms of competing with F1's frontrunners, the late 80s could be close. Michael Andretti's pole time for the 1989 Valvoline Detroit Grand Prix (a CART event) would have placed him 3rd on the grid of the 1988 Detroit Grand Prix (F1's final race in Detroit) placing him behind only Senna and Berger.

I would be curious to know how many laps the Garage 56 took to need a refuel compared to the LMP2's. Surely that 700+ horse power (and extra weight) costs them some time in extra stops. That was part of the domanence of the deisil cars back in the day.

I really wish it was a time trial format instead of a race format, then overlaid so they ghost through each other. Sometimes there's blocking
And don't do a standing start either. No series with LMP2 has standing starts, and neither does either Le Mans (when the Camaro G56 raced) or the Cup series where the original NASCAR Camaro races regularly.
The difference (due to LMP2 having higher speed over the control line thanks to superior acceleration out of the Ford Chicane) might have been enough that the G56 wouldn't catch up until after the second chicane and the LMP2 could have passed back on exiting Mulsanne Corner.

@@legeekdechepaou411 Because to be honest, the G56 car is already as light as you can reasonably make a stock car without radically altering the entire chassis. Sure, it's a sim version, but it still needs to somewhat reflect reality. Cranking that engine all the way up is something they could reasonably do without much effort, and if the engine only had to last a single lap the amount if power they can squeeze out of those things is _terrifying._ There was a Shelby GT500 touring car in New Zealand that had a Ford Cup motor, the RY45, and because it only needed to run for 25 laps or so they cranked the limiter up to 11,000RPM and just let it scream.

The weight is the problem
No, it's the aero. Weight matters for acceleration (longitudinal and lateral), but the Le Mans lap is dominated by straights, especially without the chicane. The Camaro has almost 50% more power than the LMP2 but a _lower_ top speed, so it must be very draggy. The drag isn't associated with downforce either, just the pure size of the car, so the power surplus is just being wasted.
Tbh honest both of you are right. A lower weight helps massively with acceleration, braking and low-speed corners while the aero let's you attack the high-speed corners. The LMP2 is less draggy too, very beneficial around here

The fastest lap time set by an LMP2 car in Le Mans was the pole lap in 2020 with a 3:24.528. The fastest time of a Hypercar was the pole last year when the Ferrari 499P did a 3:22.982.
@@tijmendr9006The hybrid wouldn't make too big of a difference. The current hybrid systems don't add any extra power, it is just a different way to generate power. It helps slightly because the lower from the hybrid is instant torque and the LMH cars get all wheel drive over 190 kph. But if you took an LMDh car and removed the hybrid, and gave them the same maximum power, they would be quite close because the LMDh would have the instant torque but the non hybrid version would be slightly lighter with no hybrid system.
@brinkipinki Before the Hypercara were introduced, the LMP2 cars were alot faster. They got heavily slowed down to the point they were about 7 to 8 seconds slower than they were in 2017-2020. By old LMP2s they mean, pre-nerfed LMP2s

It would have been an even bigger gap if it had been overlaid qualifying laps, as the LMP2 car would have a significantly higher speed over the control line to start the lap due to getting a faster exit from the Ford chicane. Certainly enough that the G56 would not have caught up before the second chicane.
Even if LMP(?) were 10 seconds quicker, it's still two minutes more boring.
