  • CJ Lord was nice enough to come into the shop and share his take on streamer fishing in small creeks. He has dialed in the streamer game and caught some very large wild fish on small streams. Hope you guys enjoy this and can learn a thing or two video from our streamer clinic from February.

This is incredible. I needed this in my life. I intend to take what I learned to the stream ASAP. Would have loved to have seen this in person. However, I am so appreciative of him allowing you to record and you posting online. One of my favorite overall tutorials I have seen on RUclips to trout fishing. Well done guys! Best of luck as you all put the Educated Angler exclusively on here. I will be tuning in!

I've watched so many 'how to' videos on streamer fishing on youtube and most give no real direction or straight explanation then one day I randomly see this and it's more productive and informative than any other video I've ever seen. Thank you

This is very interesting. I love the unconventional approach of CJ. I bet a lot of this approach could cross over into an interesting hybrid of streamer/nymph/wet-fly fishing with ultralight spinning gear. Could make the flip casts and small creek snagginess easier to avoid than with fly gear. I spent my life fishing small Sierra trout streams with very light spinning gear, approaching my fishing like hunting. Super quiet, crouching low, crawling and wading, fishing upstream mostly, lots of patience and solitude. Lots of small Panther Martins and live bait. I'm excited about bringing fly fishing, especially wet fly techniques to spinning gear, and also trying similar techniques with fly gear to see the difference. I'm sure it's huge, but the crossover potential both ways excites me. Thank you for the knowledge

With no fly line and just flipping the streamer, why use a $1000 dollar fly rod....John Glass is right! light spinning gear is all that's needed surely. Its about working the pattern primarily.

John Glass Streamers like the sex dungeon are very easy to cast on spinning rod! Although you cant work them quite as well, nymphs and dries could be fished to on a spinning rod, heavy mono can work decently as fly line, some fly fisherman use a mono-rig
Way less drag if there is no fly line

I know people who fish heavy streamers like the head banger sculpin and other cone head streamers on spinning rods. The rods arent as soft so you are limited on the action you can give the fly but those guys catch fish the same as me on my fly rod. Use what you got and what you are familiar with and make it work for you.

Bang on - old man here and I have to fish with purpose - love streamer fishing - it’s hunting pure and simple - I use the “dangle” a lot - fishing upstream as you say - I also use the rod much of the time to animate my streamer - I think stripping by hand is just a very limiting approach - I use it but not much - I also use very long pauses and it has paid off time and again - I use my euro rod to fish a small streamer differently and I use my 6 weight trad rod when I have room to roll cast or haul

Browns don't like bucking current . . . creeks around me they will sit in 8 inches of water behind a rock or tree branch.

Full sink he uses orvis 250 grain sinking line. You can get away with a sink tip on small streams but they cast lile crap

Might have missed something, but you guys specifically point out/emphasize that the articulated flies with 2 hooks aren’t legal on Delayed Harvest waters, around the 15:45 mark. But the hook regulations (North Carolina)are exactly the same on Wild and C&R signs re: hooks. Why the emphasis on DH? Are you fishing two hooks on these small wild streams?
I’ve asked this exact question on a forum and have gotten mixed responses. I won’t elaborate.
    Enjoyed the vid.

So most of the time when CJ fishes an articulated streamer on water designated like DH, he only uses 1 hook on the articulation. You can use an articulated streamer as long as there is only 1 hook.

If you are reaction fishing you will most likely have head takes. Seldom do I see rear take. One hook is plenty.

This is awesome. But completely overcomplicated. Yes the concept is new to fly fishermen, but not to fishing. These are swim jigs. Bass fishermen have been using things that are identical to what he is showing for 20 years. Really I am surprised this is a new thing... Trout are predators just like largemouth bass.

catching a largemouth bass and a 20+ inch wild brown trout is a night and day difference.

Bass on fly is definitely similar to bass on gear.

    • @N2theBlue1
      @N2theBlue1 Год назад

@@tannerfurbee6387 the fish is different but the technique is the same. Especially when he’s moving the fly upstream he’s fishing very similarly to the way a bass fishermen flips a lay down.
