  • While visiting the Smokies in June 2022, I did some epic day hikes and overnight backpacking. This is one of my day hikes, the five mile trek up Mt Leconte via the Alum Cave Trail.
This is a very popular trail. The first 1.5 miles you follow a beautiful mountain stream. At 2.5 miles you reach Alum Cave, which is the final destination for most people on this trail. However some continue the remaining 2.7 miles to the top Mt Leconte, the 3rd highest mountain in the Smokies. (around 6500 feet).
The elevation gain was a killer workout! It was really cloudy on this day so I didn't get the postcard views up top, but the experience was one I'll still remember when I'm an old man.
Enjoy viewing my experience in this beautiful park!

I found your video doing research on Alum trail, as my wife and I are planning to make the hike and spend a day or two at the lodge. Thank you for taking the time to point out a lot of things like water access, inclines, and places where the trail narrows and/or becomes steep. This was extremely helpful.

thanks for watching and leaving the nice comment! I hope you and your wife have an enjoyable time. It's a long way up that mountain but worth it when you get there. I'm heading back to the Smokys this weekend, checking out Cades Cove / Gregory Bald area this time.

I’m planning a trip up to LeConte spring 2023. I’m trying to get in shape for it the rest of this year. Great video, it makes me want it more.

I've hiked to Alum Cave before. Hiked Sunday 10-9-22 all the way to Mt Lecont with my daughter. Very challenging and beautiful. I would recommend some training before going.

I got there about 9:30 on a Tuesday or Wednesday. I got a spot but was cutting it close. Plenty of parking on the roadside though.
