The Bengals sucked and still do, The Jets got an AFC title and a butt fumble, The jags jag off every year, and Nolan is a defense pro with one shitty head coaching position.
@Austin Ryan Your wrong asf. Off by a long shot. Goose ran into him started smiling ready to be his normal, goofy self asking him where has he been, then when the guy responded “upstairs” in a low, soft, sad voice. Goose’s smile instantly turned into a concerned look. Goose was genuinely worried something was wrong. I’m sure Goose has no idea dude was about to walk away from the team. Goose knew he didn’t show up to practice, but it’s no way he knew he would quit. Goose probably thought he had a family emergency or something that’s why he seemed worried.
Yeah I love goose for that he didn't waste time on a lost cause. Goose could see it in his eyes that he wasn't with them anymore. No point in showing concern for the quitter
The guy "quit" for exactly the right reason. He lost the desire to play and he had a passion to do something else in life. If someone else cannot cope with that state of mind...too fucking bad. I understand exactly how he felt. As a sophomore in high school, I was getting more and more time working with the varsity first team. Suddenly, it hit me...I didn't enjoy playing the game, anymore. More to the point, I knew I would be sticking around for all the wrong reasons...principally, giving a shit what someone else might think if I "quit." Coach even let me take a week off practice, said if I changed my mind I could come back, nothing would be said. But I knew myself...I came to that realization I just didn't want it anymore after giving it a lot of thought, and a week away wasn't going to change that decision (and it didn't.) I still loved football...but playing just didn't mean anything to me, anymore. Case closed. Footnote: Once in college, the college coach ran into me in the Student Union, sized me up, and declared, "Hey - you look like you could play some ball. Come on out for spring practice." But, even then - I just didn't have the desire I'd had all along before choosing to walk away...so I never walked on in college, either. By the way...that college coach went on later to become an NFL head coach. Not saying I was pro material...my point is that desire is just as big a component as ability where choosing a course of action in life. I 100% understand exactly what that NFL rookie meant when he decided an NFL career was not how he wanted to make his mark in life. And I'll say again - anyone who might fail to appreciate someone choosing their personal, private direction in life for themselves...too fucking bad.
It was nice to see Marvin Lewis try to talk Matthews out of quitting. The NFL is such a competitive environment, he could have just as easily said, "ok", and moved on, but he took the time to try to make sure Matthews knew what he was giving up, to forestall any regrets later, classy move.
The guy that quit he just didn't have that love for the game anymore. Why would you play if you aren't having fun just pointless, I highly respect his decision.
Going back & watching all the episodes from this season after hearing that Tony "The Goose" Siragusa, Sr. passed away, last week. I still can't believe that he's gone. R.I.P., Tony "The Goose" Siragusa, Sr.!...
Losing Jamal Lewis was a blow, but to Brian Billick's credit, he didn't make excuses. Gotta admire that. Hell, this was the same team that won the Super Bowl the year before and they went five straight games without scoring a touchdown.
Billick was such an amazing coach, I’m surprised he didn’t get another gig after his last year with Baltimore (2007)! He did have some really good coaches under him as well! Marvin Lewis, Jack Del Rio, Rex Ryan & more. Crazy how most of the coaches under him become Head Coaches as well! That just goes to show how amazing Billick was!
From what I know, roshaun Matthews ended up having a very successful life outside of football and now his son is a 4 star corner, getting really good offers such as Georgia, FSU, Texas A&M, and Tennessee
Amazing that in 2001 teams were still using turf. I remember after this canceled game The Eagles had a press conference to explain their decision. Troy Vincent, Player Rep, led the conference
what you talking about? Not only NFL but almost every college uses some kind of turf. I don't know the name, its more advanced today than then, but hardly any college uses natty grass.
As a former fairly successful high school athlete and now as a career man in my 30s, Brian Billick is really an impressive example of how to lead. Smart, well-read, emotionally controlled, listens to his workers, not afraid of confrontation. Very informative.
I worked for toys r us a few years back as an assembler... long story short, I ended up quitting because my manager kept changing my schedule when they knew I was a student and had another job and were not willing to work with me. I have a lot of respect for Terry Allen. He had a bad season the prior year and had the impossible task of replacing Jamal. He showed up to camp in great shape; seriously he looks like Terrell Davis compared to Brookins and Barnes here. Terry wasn’t great in 2001 as he was rusty in the early portion of the season and dealt with injuries in the mid portion. But by the end of the season when Grbac wasn’t throwing a ton, he stepped up big and rushed for over 90 in 3 of 4 games, including the wildcard game against Miami.
Tony taking his kids to toys r us hit me hard . Lol my dad use to take me there and now I have a kid and now there’s no stores anywhere 👎growing up was so fun
They had too much money tied up in Grbac and Searcy to try to retain Priest. Jason Brookins had his moments and showed off some good power running ability but was fumble prone. In the last game of the preseason Brookins ran for like 112 yards.
NFL Vault well i guess go through all of them (if possible) i mean the hard knocks series is amazing as it is maybe go to season two or have a fan vote
If Jamal Lewis doesn’t tear his ACL in training camp and the Ravens re-sign Trent Dilfer instead of signing Elvis Grbac, maybe the Ravens repeat as champions and there’s no Patriots dynasty.
As a NE fan all I can say is the Eagles lost their starting QB and won, the Pats lost a lot of players over the years and still won, thinking no Gronk, still won.
Sometimes people are too emotional and don't examine their decision from ALL angles. Lewis was just pointing out some FACTS. No one pressured him at all.
@15:30 when the guy walks out of the room and says "he's gonna come back at 2.5 or 3.0.....he is talking about Terry Allen coming back at 2.5 million or 3 million dollars to get him on that field..lol..
"Probably 6 months from now after we win another Super Bowl he's gonna say "man I could've made that team and and I can't believe I did that!" and he's gonna kick himself in the ass. That's just...reality's gonna smack him right in the face." Well, that quote aged horribly lol
That turf at the Vet was dreadful. Even the eagles players complained about it. Was not good. Thankfully they moved to the Linc. But a lot of us still miss the Vet. Especially because how it ended...
Jamal Lewis hurt them big time. Terry Allen did all right, but it put more pressure on Grbac and the passing game. I think they should’ve pursued Robert Smith more aggressively because he came off a career rushing season
Terry came to the season in shape and played really well down the stretch against the Vikings and Miami. But the Ravens needed a big physical back to compete with the Steelers defense and Brookins wasn't talented enough to fit that role.
I used to run after Terry Allen as a little kid trying to get his autograph after Clemson games. He would to jog straight to the locker room, but I walked his ass down one time and I still have that autographed jersey.
