  • (Filmed in Summer 2017) Mata Lal Devi Temple (known sometimes by foreigners as the "Funny Temple") is an extraordinary and unique Hindu Temple in Amritsar, Punjab. This is a very unusual temple due to it's of kilter designs and layout, especially it's idols and décor which is extremely bright and colorful.
Visiting this temple is a very interactive and immersive experience. You have to crawl through passageways (sometimes so small you must slither like a snake on your stomach!) and walk through a shallow tunnel filled with water while music and bells fill the air.
This temple is dedicated to a female Hindu Saint; Mata Laal Devi who lived in the 1900s. There are depictions of her throughout the mandir (temple). This temple is unique in that you follow a path from beginning to end in a mazelike fashion and see scenes unfold as you climb through artfully designed lions and snakes mouths and it contributes to the feeling that you've entered another world.
I'd highly recommend visiting this temple if you're in the Amritsar area. You can ask a rickshaw driver to take you there on your way from the City of Amritsar, (perhaps you're near the Golden Temple) to the border of Pakistan. I did this unexpectedly and am very glad I had this experience!
Just be warned that you will have to take your shoes off (as is custom in India in almost all religious sites, and people's homes) and you will most likely have to crawl on your hands and knees at some point and walk through not the cleanest water near the end. I know this is supposed to act as a journey and transformation for the worshipper, but I understand it is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, and those with mobility issues may have a hard time going through the Mata Lal Devi temple.
Speaking of the India/Pakistan border, my next video will be about just that! There's a really interesting thing I'd like to share with you about what I saw when I went there. (I was NOT expecting what happened!)
I'm making these videos as little time capsules for myself so I can look back on my travels and remember what it was like. I have a few more videos from India left to edit, then I can start editing my time in Hong Kong and China! I apologize for the poor video and audio quality, but I didn't have a good camera at the time and am working my way through my older footage before I get to my more recent adventures!
I make videos on various topics including Travel, International Pop Culture, Language and More! I also stream Gaming, Interviews/Just Chatting and Language Learning content on Twitch!
