  • A New Zealand accordionist friend, Ian Upson, recommended this song to me. It was performed years ago by well known New Zealand accordionist Trevor Taylor in his album "Interfusion." I was attracted to the piece because it's just one of those songs that makes one feel good when playing it. I'm using my Roland FR-4x with guitar settings from the Balkan expansion. Programming for this and other v-accordions is available from Richard Noel at www.noelaccordion.com.

As usual, Richard makes it look easy, but of course it requires hours and hours of practice practice practice to make it seem so. It's a delightful melody that fits the Roland accordion perfectly, and merits the work to learn it. Having finally conquered "Grisette," (check out Richard's version on RUclips), I am now challenging myself to learn "Free and Easy." Thanks, Richard.....

Thanks, Tom. Fortunately when it comes to songs like this one and Grisette, the practice is quite enjoyable. They really are good songs for the accordion. I learned of both of those by way of people I've met through youtube.

Wow - you must be one of the very few outside of NZ who actually have a copy of this album (did Ian send you a copy by digital form?). It is a gem. I count both Trevor (who was my teacher for a time) and Allan his guitarist friend as my friends also. Sadly neither of them are with us any longer. All on that album are great but there is another that I enjoyed immensely - Ragging the minor.

Bryan, First I am honored to have made your acquaintance at the recent symposium in Warren, Ohio. As I noted on the youtube performance here I was encouraged to play the song by New Zealander Ian Upson. I don't have the original album but was given a handwritten copy of the music which I transcribed into a musescore version. My tempo is slower than Trevor's simply because I felt compelled to do it at a tempo that my fingers could negotiate comfortably. It is a marvelous tune that creates a "free and easy" mood even if it isn't that easy to play.

@@RichardNoel Thanks Richard - the sentiment is reciprocated - in spades! I'll continue this discussion off-line but in the meantime, anybody reading this may be wondering about the reference to the symposium where Richard was among the faculty. As an attendee I can assure anybody interested that if it comes up again next year - get over there! It is well worth it.

      Hi Bryan
If you are wanting to have a copy of Trevour's arrangements let me know as Angela gave me boxes of his music after he passed away. I think I have all the music he played in Interfusion.

@@ianupson3609 Hey Ian - how are you, me ol' mate?
Was "Ragging the Minor" in the pile? Often wanted to look at that one. We need to get in touch somehow. Richard - would you mind being the conduit for a safe exchange of email addresses between us? Thanks.
      Bryan

Hi Bryan . A quick look hasn't yielded Ragging in the Minor, although I can picture having seen it in years gone by. Very happy for you to come and have a look at Trevor's music I have here.
Richard has my e-mail address. I have started learning Free and Easy and it is a really fun piece to play.

I don't think it's exactly what I've sent out, but I can send you the settings if you like the sound. Just email me directly at bakersfieldaccordion.
