Op. 106 ("Hammerklavier") was dedicated to his friend and patron Archduke Ruldolph. According to Carl Czerny, his pupil, Beethoven said: "Now I am writing a sonata which shall be my greatest" Beethoven had told his pupil Ries: "This sonata was written in oppressive circumstances. For it is hard to write for on's bread, that is the position I am in now" Sometimes a genius is very maltreated. I have the vynil album containing this sonata. Gilels - great rendition.
@geminian7846 UMG is Universal Music Group which owns this commercial recording. They, Sony, EMI, and Warner are on a warpath on YT postings. They've come after some of my postings - ironically though - only for the public domain 'live' broadcasts which they do NOT have property rights of. I've had to submit several refutations already...
@brtherjohn Thanks for the explanation, and commiserations! One would have more respect for the system if the copyright holders could get it right and not trample on all and sundry. I wonder why they only intercepted Part 3 of this recording and didn't go for them all.
This would be the best version of the Hammerklavier, were it not that the third part will not play: a stupid notice comes up saying that it contains content from UMG (whatever that might be) and is therefore not available in my country (UK). Any way round that?

6:08 BEETHOVEN SHOWS TO BE A PURE GENIUS!!
Stunning !! That's my word for it. And a beautiful recording........If it is from Deutsche
Grammophon it wouldn't surprise me.

excellent clarity, though at the cost of a slower than usual tempo (and much slower than Beethoven's marked tempo iirc)
Berlin, 1982
Is this the recording famous recording from Deutsche Grammophon? thanks!
Yes
.. forgot which 1 is harder , Hammerklavier or Waldstein... CAN ANY1 TELL ME WHICH 1 IS HARDER.
Hammerklavier
@DunNotCome Hammerklavier.
nightmare
too much academic... very typical for gilels. Arrau plays this sonata much better
