@301250 I was not aware that Gilels passed away on the operating table. I actually expired during an Angioplasty proceedure a few years ago. I was fully awake and I'm aware of the experience. It was nothing like you hear about such experiences. I suffered a massive Myocardial Infarction {heart attack} on the table. They revived me and rushed me into the operating room for my "second" open heart surgery. Yet, here I am, a miracle they say. And I still enjoy this beautiful music. I'm blessed....
Ohhhhhhhh, God, talk about drama. It leaves me an emotional wreck. You know, Beethoven wrote this after his brother died and during the time when he was fighting like mad (unsuccessfully) to gain custody of his brother's son. He must've felt like his world fell apart.
@Jeffbear1 ...yes, the blame for the botched surgery was laid squarely on the less than competent Soviet docs....yes, it's kind of sad to lose one of the greatest pianists that ever lived. Get his Les Adieux sonata (Piano Sonata no.26 in E flat major, op.81a) and enjoy a superlative perfmn. You are lucky to survive after such a coronary attributable to great US or UK surgeons and facilities? sd goh (malaysia)
Pity that this legendary pianist expired on the operating table and didn't complete d Beethoven pn sonata cycle which would have been as great as any of the others.
