    There is nothing wrong with an epidural. There is no gold medal for birthing a baby the best way. You just have to get it done as comfortably and safely as possible for both of you.

    • @minimalmiranda471
      @minimalmiranda471 5 лет назад +84

      It's not that it's wrong. It's that it can have Its negative effects, just like an other intervention. If you look into it, it actually isn't nearly as safe as doctors make it out to be.
      I had an Epidural with my first, and it was one of my biggest regrets, next to induction while I was already in labor. Those things can mess with your body's natural chemistry, as well as cause complications for you and baby.
      In Sarah's case, she 100% tried her best. But hospitals are HARD to progress in. The entire environment is very stressful, and it can keep you from dilating.
      Thankfully, the Epi. calmed her enough to be able to relax and dilate. But understanding that before-hand, may have helped her.
      I'll be having my baby at home this next go around, with a Mid-wife, and I'm very excited to experience the differences between the two.
      Hospital stay stalled my birth as well, and my experience was very similar to Sarah's. Sadly, it's quite common in the hospital scene, for natural moms who aren't fully educated (which you can't be, until you've already personally gone through it).

    I am definitely not a doctor, nor am I studying to be one, but I am a dietetics student. Almost everything I learned in my nutrition course this semester about pregnancy and infants has stressed the importance of natural births and breastfeeding. C-Sections are reallyyyyyy not setting your infant up for success in their health. I am glad you did not get forced into getting one because it is completely against your beliefs. Pre-med students at my university are not even required to take a basic nutrition course... it is so disheartening because many diseases can be prevented with diet but yet doctors are not educated on this, therefore many do not have respect for holistic and natural methods. Thank you, Sarah, for sticking firm in your beliefs regardless of the doctors and haters and not giving into the modern world of medicine that most of the time does more harm than good. (Doctors are amazing, don't get me wrong. We absolutely need them. I just think that we rely TOO much on them and the "easy way" out of our issues.)

      Not necessarily true - in Florida (where i live) you can provide full scope obstetric care as certified professional midwife without any kind of nursing/medical degree (or any higher ed degree tbh) and frankly it is a practice that is irresponsible and has resulted in severe instances of maternal and fetal harm. @ me if you must but midwifery in certain states is a joke at best and a nightmare at worst. some states provide adequate regulation for midwives but most only require high school education and the lack of oversight is shocking

    This brought tears to my eyes. I’ve got two daughters, the first I was med free until 9cm and similarly my body was just working against itself refusing to dilate any further, causing swollen cervix, etc. Ended in an epidural. Second baby fully natural hospital birth. But I felt the same about my body and avoiding a c-section. Everyone’s mindset is different and allowed to be different but I felt so understanding and connected with everything you were describing in your desires for Fox’s birth. Love that quote regarding birth plans! The education is so important regardless of what happens. I was made fun of for having birth plans but I stood by them! And remembering all of this just made all my emotions come back from both my births. That exhaustion during natural labor is in a whole other realm. But I wouldn’t change anything about it. Congratulations to you and Kurt! You guys are amazing. And Fox is such a sweet peanut of a baby!!!

    As a nurse and mum myself I LOVE that quote your sister gave you! It’s so empowering and reassuring because you can educate yourself on what you want to do or how you might like it to go, but then when it doesn’t happen and go to plan, that’s okay and it’s not worth getting upset or stressed over.
    Totally don’t mean this to come across the wrong way, but you being on such a big platform and your birth not going to plan, is reassuring for others to see that things can’t always go the way we want and we can’t always make things happen a certain way.
    It helps those who might have no idea what birth is actually like see the real side.
    Fox is beautiful love, mum life is so tough, nothing will ever go to plan lol, and they continue to throw spanners in our works! Enjoy every moment, even the tough times, it goes too fast ❤️❤️

    My husband is a doctor and I work with amazing doctors daily. It so saddens me that people are portraying them as these evil, money hungry beings that pushes women to do things their way when in fact they work so hard to make peoples lives better and frequently goes home wracked with worry, sadness and empathy for their patients. With deliveries they truly do what they can do keep mom and baby safe. People will frequently paint them as the bad guys, yet when things get tricky and dangerous for a patient it’s up to them to fix things and step in to help. The amount of compassion I have seen these professionals put into their work is often overlooked.
    My sister is a midwife and she works alongside doctors to get the best care for every patient and sees them as her colleagues rather than her opposition and vise versa.
    There is also nothing wrong with an epidural. I wish women would stop shaming each other for the way they choose to give birth, feed their babies and raise their children. What about supporting each other and choosing to be kind to one another?

    • @kyliedavis9167
      @kyliedavis9167 5 лет назад +3

      I agree. At the end of the day, doctors use their 15+ years of training, and experience dealing with 1000s of cases to make decisions with the ultimate goal of doing no harm. Keeping mum and bub alive would have been the forefront of this drs decision- she is ultimately responsible, not the midwife. Poor doctors get a bad wrap by their manner but also their need to make critical decisions.
      I'm glad it all worked out the way Sarah wanted in the end though! In my own circumstance, I went with drs call for induction and have no regrets.
      I love this video! I got emotional with the footage, it reminded me of my own labour....bloody tough but the best day of my life xxx thanks for retelling it sarah

      All doctors are different. No two doctors are the same. The doctors you know may be amazing but maybe the doctors where she is weren’t quite what she preferred. Lots of people have had bad experiences with doctors. So have sympathy for her situation because it is different than yours. Clearly she isn’t against an epidural or anyone that has one. It was just not in her plans. Nothing wrong with wanting it natural and nothing wrong with wanting the medicine, she did not talk negative about the way anyone else would want their birth. So practice what you preach and maybe be nice.

    • @delanijoubert3939
      @delanijoubert3939 5 лет назад +7

      Makenzie Brummett I don’t think you understood my comment. I wasn’t trying to be mean or directing the epidural comment directly at her. I was referring to it in general. I don’t think my comment was mean in any way so telling me to “maybe be nice” and to “practice what I preach” is a little hypocritical.
      I was simply trying to explain my experience and not trying to undermine hers. I also wanted a natural, non medicated birth, but ended up with an epidural. I was just trying to tell her that it’s ok to have one, not judging in any way.
      Unfortunately the internet is such a difficult place to voice an opinion with everyone being overly sensitive and reading into comments what one really wasn’t trying to say.
      Only good vibes, love her and her channel, just standing up for the lovely doctors out there.

      @@makenziebrummett9112 I dont think anyone was trying to be mean.... But I do think that maybe she was more sensitive to the things the doctors were saying because she was in labour and pain etc. But she is also not a doctor so to assume she knows what medical decision should be made when she is not a doctor could be dangerous. I know not all doctors are great and can lack bedside manner but their job is stressful and you know how many difficult patients they deal with who won't listen and do what they should, that can make them react stronger than necessary.

Could be many reasons, one of them it being difficult because your back was "tight" - which usually is because people are afraid it will be painful. Another factor can be that he didn't use enough local anaesthesia or that he hit either the bone (common) or a nerve (very uncommon). I always tell my patients it should not be very painful and to tell me if it is so I can use more local...

Especially because it didn’t go the way I wanted for mine, I get it! I was induced which I didn’t want but ultimately had to do because she was in there as late as they could leave her, which in hindsight I’m so thankful for because i had an intense, continuous 2 hour labour and she was out! Couldn’t imagine having a long labour now, oooooft lol.
    But your story helps those who might have no idea what birth is actually like see the real side.
    Fox is beautiful love, mum life is so tough, nothing will ever go to plan lol, and they continue to throw spanners in our works! Enjoy every moment, even the tough times, it goes too fast ❤️❤️
    Ps LOVE you for going public!! Love our public maternity system in NSW ❤️❤️

    I hate when doctors try to pressure patients into procedures :( I’m a nurse, and our predominant role is to advocate for our patients. Fortunately most doctors listen to us and we have great working relationships but there’s some that don’t want to and it can have a negative impact

      Jade Barnett trust your nurses and midwives to do right by you, as well as your doctors. Doctors aren’t bad guys but they don’t have the same amount of time spent with you as nursing staff so be open minded to that😄 my biggest piece of advice regardless of if it’s through pregnancy or having to be in hospital for other reasons is to ask questions and ensure you voice your wants and needs for your body like sezzy has done. Also if you are in pain and need relief tell us! Getting pain relief isn’t a bad thing and you shouldn’t be made to feel bad for wanting it. For some reason people have this expectation of women to deal with the pain, but that’s like expecting someone with a broken leg to go without relief and that’s less painful than child birth. Be proud of what your body has already accomplished and don’t let anyone shame you in its peaking moments x

    • @VictoriaKorkosova
      @VictoriaKorkosova 5 лет назад +3

      no matter where in the world you nurses have the same attitude. your job is noy to advocate for your patients but to take care of them and follow doctor's orders. the doctors don't have to listen to you, but the other way arround. I am not saying that your job is not important, it is, very much, but you should know your ''territory"

    • @phoenixfeather96
      @phoenixfeather96 5 лет назад +4

      Victoria Korkosova I’m sorry but I don’t know anyone who blindly follows a doctors orders. If I believe something is unsafe or my patient doesn’t feel they are safe, or I believe there may be a better alternative for a patient, I will voice it and recommend it, and 99 times out of a 100 the doctors agree. This is why I am good at my job and have become close friends with doctors. They trust me with their patients. Any patient has the right to refuse a procedure if they are fully informed. Of course I care for my patients and do what needs to be done, but the patient comes first. Not the doctor. We know our “territory” which is why advocacy is a key part of our job. I’m not saying it’s the only part, but my experience of my job goes beyond public opinion. Advocate doesn’t just mean, what the patient wants, it also means protecting them from physical deterioration, and ensuring I getting who they need at that moment. The public only see 40% of what we do, so I understand why they misunderstand our total role, but please don’t assume that we don’t either.

    • @VictoriaKorkosova
      @VictoriaKorkosova 5 лет назад +2

      phoenixfeather96 I don’t have a reason to disagree that you are good at your job, you might be top in your field.
      I don’t know how it works there, but here in Europe, nursing school is 4 years. On the other hand to become a doctor you need to study at least 10 years and continue studying throughout your life.
      I would definitely trust what my doctor would recommend for me and my baby. Of course they can make mistakes and for sure they are not so “connected” with the patients, but that’s because they must be always objective.. they have a great responsibility over their patient’s life.. of course nurses and midwives are very very important but the role of the doctor in a critical conditions is irreplaceable..

    I’m a medical student and please just remember that a doctor will never make a decision if it’s not necessary for you or for the baby. They know about what can go wrong and that’s why they’ll make decisions based on what’s best!

    • @renewyou19
      @renewyou19 5 лет назад +5

      Eltanin James watch The Business Of Being Born. You might be a good medical student and a good person, but not all doctors do what is best for you. Often times they want to just get you out of the hospital so they can get the next person in and make more money. Don’t be a sheep & assume all doctors are created equal. You seem great though.

    • @eltaninjames3464
      @eltaninjames3464 5 лет назад

      renewyou19 this is true and I understand that but you also in the same way can’t be a sheep and assume that they didn’t have the best intentions in this situation just because they clashed with what the midwives said. Sitting here with my paediatrics text book in front of me after just finishing my obstetrics exams and delivering baby’s myself I’d say I would’ve done the same thing the doctors did here, and if not I’d have actually acted sooner than they did because of Fox’s weight. So I do agree that some doctors are greedy and don’t have the patients best interest at heart but in this case I believe they did and I don’t think they deserve to be judged because they had a different opinion to the midwives

    • @renewyou19
      @renewyou19 5 лет назад +3

      Eltanin James I have my degrees as well. Citing his weight as the issue seems foolish as he wasn’t an abnormal weight. I was very taken aback by the reaction they had to a very normal sized baby. I respect you and your beliefs, but I think you need to accept that in many ways, we should not be playing God to this degree. Fox is small, but not abnormally so...especially with a small mother.

    • @eltaninjames3464
      @eltaninjames3464 5 лет назад +2

      renewyou19 I guess from a medical students point of view I don’t want the future mothers watching this to take it the wrong way and not trust doctors recommendations about what’s best for their baby. I know Sezzy makes it clear that this is just her story but i don’t want the view of the doctors importance in the process to be undermined

    Hey Sarah, ohhhhh my goodness... your birth story is very similar to mine. It was my first baby too, in October. I felt like you were literally telling my own! I was aiming for as natural as possible. My pregnancy was so good, I was doing pre-natal yoga and acupuncture regularly, eating super healthy and doing lots of exercise.. when my waters broke, there was meconium in them :( so it disqualified me from the birth centre. Soooooooooooooo devastated. Long story short, I ended up getting induced (NO!!!! Not happy) got to 4cm after about 7 hours, pleaded for an epidural as well.. and this part actually made me cry!! when you said that you were apologizing to Kurt over and over.. I was exactly the same :( then also ended up getting an episiotomy and forceps! I FEEL YOU!!!!!!!!! We had a beautiful healthy and happy baby girl, Aurora Eva.

    • @zoepalmer7105
      @zoepalmer7105 4 года назад

      Also, dr and hospital pressure is SO insane.. we felt completely pressured into getting induced because apparently mec in waters is high risk but when researching it after (it was about the only thing i didn't research beforehand), its only the slightest risk of baby inhaling it.. also when Aurora was monitored, she was chillin in there, so happy and yet they still had to induce and monitor throughout :( it made things so much more stressful.. i was also screaming in pain and shaking all over.

    My labour was pretty much identical except my son remained fine without any distress at the end. 40 hour labour, everything was the same even down to when I got the epi!
    I strongly believe one of us may have been in trouble if I hadn't had the epidural, as by the time it was all over and I just had to push out the placenta, my body basically gave up from all that pushing and pain and I started to bleed out.
    Our bodies can do amazing things but they are not unbeatable and sometimes having that help in the form of drugs or an epi is what gets you healthy baby and mummy at the end.

I meet with a doctor for one of my OB appointments and she's asking about my numbers. Well she just blurts out "well they are typically low and aren't true when you're pregnant." Basically telling me that im not really taking care of myself good enough and my numbers are false. Then she says that I need to change eye doctors and get shots in my eyes just "because" being a diabetic and pregnant can cause issues, so I need to go ahead and get shots now, while im pregnant to prevent it. Some doctors you just dont vibe with and I totally understand that!

My milk hadn't come in, but I knew it would come in by day 3 ...but they kept insisting!! 👇💋

  • @sarbear3686
    @sarbear3686 5 лет назад

    What an epic story. You did such a good job! I think your sister really hit the nail on the head with the quote she sent you about birth plans. I've had 3 boys. The youngest is now 9 months, and all their births were different. My first was an 11.5 hour labour which had a lot of elements of your story eg. a few out of body experiences. Birth plan was no epidural and no episiotomy or forceps if at all possible. I turned up at hospital with 1-2 min apart contractions and was in so much pain but was told it was too late for an epidural because I was already almost 10cm dilated. He was born 4.5 hours later after hours of pushing - same thing as you - heart rate was dropping. They were telling me he was almost crowning but I couldn't get him out - they did an episiotomy and I got him out without forceps 3 contractions later - he was 4.686kg, and I'm the same size as you - he was never coming out without the episiotomy. Second bub was 5.5 hours all up but I only made it to hospital with 15 mins to spare - I was still wondering whether I was in actual labour until an hour before he was born. Third bub I'd booked my induction at my MGP appointment at 40+3, for when I would be 40+9. My midwife examined me and said there was no baby coming in the next 48 hours - my cervix was so long she could barely reach it. He was born spontaneously less than 24 hours later. It was under 4 hours all up but a little intense for the last hour - he hadn't engaged and once we got him in to position I felt him move down the birth canal within the space of a couple of contractions - another big one at 4.2kg. My sister has had tiny bubs as well, and also had doctors concerned with her measurements - she's on the small side and her husband is too so she wasn't worried - both babies have been born very healthy, just teeny tiny, and the birth story of her first is so close to yours- over 24 hour labour, epidural didn't work until the third go, threatened with emergency c section and they ended up doing an episiotomy with vacuum.
    Huge Congratulations!

I was induced 2 weeks before my due date, and even through I am glad I did it (due to health issues) I am so said I missed out on my water breaking naturally and experiencing everything naturally. I had my little girl 8 days ago- at 33 weeks they realised my belly wasn’t growing anymore and sent me for an ultrasound they did the scan and estimated that she was going to be 1.7kg which is very tiny. I was induced at 36+6 and she was born at 2kg she is still in the neonatal special care unit now.
