I think the listener assumed that because Alanis sang the verses as the predator and the chorus as herself that, because it was literally a woman's voice, it must have been a woman she was imitating. And then "Don't tell anyone" meant an adult music producer preying on the teenage girl he was mastering an album with... but she thought it meant "We're both legal age but don't tell anyone I'm a lesbian."
