I was there. It was even more amazing in person. The Audi cars themselves were engineering marvels at the time. Near perfect weight distribution and very technical compared to the American Iron. It started to rain as it commonly does in Sonoma and the American muscle settled quietly in the paddock. But to the Audis, the rain was their play ground. Walter put on quite a show. I was standing at turn 2 at the top of the hill and he would crest the hill, pitch it sideways, and throw AWD rooster tails all the way to turn 3. Sliding sideways between 2 and 3. Everyone along the fence line cheered him on, amazed by his skill and AWD car. Audi won a lot of hearts that day. Pretty much #Respect from everyone at Sears Point. This epitomizes road racing experiences so many of us love.
Yes in a way, but you need to keep in mind, that the Trans Am Set up, e.g. the awd split between front and rear axl, was totally different to the rally set up. Not to mention the shorter dimension of the Audi S1 Quattro. If you keep this in mind, the demonstration of Walter in Sears Point beomes even more sensationall.
I saw this in person. Every crew member in the pit area were standing at the fences watching one of the greatest driving demonstrations ever. Walter had the car crossed up exiting every turn. It sent chills up my spine. Thanks for the video!
I was a USA fan of the 1980 Quatttro Coupe when it came out in Europe. I followed it changing the WRC in the '80s. When Audi entered Trans Am to much scoffing, I suspected they mught surprise everyone. I followed the series on TV and saw the Mid-Ohio race in person with my dad. It rained the entire race. Audi went from 3rd & 4th on the grid to 1st & 2nd by the second turn! They finished 1st(Stuck) and 3rd(Haywood). Hurley's charge up through the field from last to 3rd was the drive of the day!
I too was there and it cemented for my love of racing cars based on street cars you could buy. I went to see the XR4 but ended up amazed by the Audi in the wet.
That pissed-off inline 5 sounds NASTY -- in a thrilling way! OMG, wish I had been there, but I was in uniform from 1986 through 1992. Oh well, I had fun, too -- just differently.
If you watch closely, Roehl seems to be fighting the nose-heavy Audi's tendency to understeer. This was common with the Audi rally cars of the time as well. As he adds power, he's able to spin the wheels just enough to rotate the car to take some of the cornering burden off of the front tires. That gives him better balance, more overall control, and a really great exit speed out of the corner.
Left foot braking, using your left foot to brake but keeping the power on with your right for a fast corner exit, steps the back out, and partially eliminates the common quattro understeer. :P
I never forgot when Audi unleashed this weapon and blew away everyone. It's one of the most "macho" looking race cars I've ever seen. I really wish Pocher would make a model of that car instead of those weird looking Lambos.
What you're saying is true, but Roehl doesn't seem to be doing that in the turn shown near the pits. He's clearly off-throttle until midway through the turn. Most left foot braking I've seen starts before and into the first half of the turn.
THAT's not balls for Walter - i've seen him driving a brand new rebuild S1E2 Pikes Peak with 700hp - it wasn't even a race - it was the show run before a race in 2002 - and Walter hammered the poor car over unpaved and partly muddy "roads" and sideways through hairpin corners as if he'd be needing another 5 seconds to win the world cup - This guy just loves driving - paved roads are kinda "nice to have" for him
You really should change the title. there's already a couple copies of this on youtube, and the misleading title pisses me off when I'm looking for stuff on the imsa gto car. Like the previous guy said, this is the AUDI 200 TRANS AM, not the AUDI 90 IMSA GTO. don't be lazy, do your homework, change the title and the description.
If you think that’s good, see some videos of Michele Mouton driving the rally Audi on dirt and jumping roads, never takes her foot off the throttle pedal ( Walter wouldn’t drive that type of road). Michele also drove in LeMan 24 hours in a totally women team and won their class. She drove one stage in the race with slicks in the rain and passed nearly all the cars in the race. Which gave the ladies victory. Vive la France . 🇫🇷 Vive la Mouton

You forget the Merkur tried to hang out for one last lap before giving up too. It was great.
For Walter, this rain was just child's play compared to what he did in rallys. Super cool

This never gets old, guys
This was my first ever GT (formerly Trans Am) race I ever went to. I have been a Quattro fan ever since.
These Audi's were so advanced for their time, they were tweeting 18 years before Twitter was even invented.

I was a Corner Worker at Turn 9 for this event. Seeing this display of car control made up for standing in the rain for hours!
There's videos from 2017 that don't have as good as quality as this video from 1988. Well done.
Ich liebe diesen Sound, ich bin neidisch das ich zu jung bin um diesen nicht live erleben hab zu können bzw die ganze Aera.
Hut ab!

Thanks for uploading this, 2019 and its still
incredible
the sound is so great !
That's what you call a reinmeister!
great driver and great car!

The way the Quattro would hook up with the pavement coming out of the turn…..wow

klasse video, der walter is einfach der beste!
die tags sind im übrigen auch sehr lustig :D
Great vid man!
quattro - veni vidi vici - then it was forbidden for the unfair advantage - but i think it was clever engineering
"Jetzt wissen's Bescheid , die Wic***r" 😁🤣
Wow awesome video!

Imagine if they had gotten the front splitter designed back then at how much of a gap would have been in pace again
Did Walter Roehrl run in a race? I didn't know that!
not only one

@paultatters Matter of taste. I think the IMSA sounds better.
