I’ve fished every spot on the skyway, and spearfished below off to the side, climbed on all the rocks, and I’ve seen all kinds of cool stuff there. Happened to witness a massive drum school, and as quickly as my line got wet, they moved away. Sheepshead are tricky but so good to eat, I had the best luck with a spear, they like to go into the rocks and snag line. I caught a ton of kings one night on incoming tide on rod. My husband got a ray on the bridge and that was a challenge to pull up! File fish, box fish and puffers also like to steal bait, and I’ve caught more of those than I can count. Caught the biggest pin fish I’ve ever seen on the bridge in winter and ate good! 😂 it actually filleted nicely. Keep coming back!
Just an FYI. Don't reel in when you hear your drag releasing especially with a spinning reel. It twists the line and can make weak spots and a tangled mess. Also the fish that nearly got your rod probably swam under a rock. Sometimes if you just wait it out it will swim out and you can catch it . Just loosen your drag and sit the rod back down.
The small fish you were catching were grunts very common their I fished the skyway my whole life whenever you do have a set rod make sure you loosen you drag so that way if a fish does take it you will just hear your rod scream then to set the hook just tighten the drag otherwise that fish will pull your rod in the water you got very lucky catching your rod before it disappeared forever loving the channel keep up the great work and maybe one day I’ll catch you out in sanibel one of these days
I have learned that. Even down in Boca Grande we are catching grunts and using them for bait. I have the drag loose but, I guess, definitely not loose enough. I will make it very loose next time. We want to go back up and try again knowing all the new information we received. Have a great day!
@@BeyondFishingFamily another great way when using grunts or large pin fish and mullet is to butterfly them basically filleting the fish backwards but keeping the meat attached to the head and pulling out its back bone
@@BeyondFishingFamily 1 it helps with a sent trail and 2 it’s easy for sharks etc to get the whole fish in its mouth instead of them just biting chunks out of the tail til they finally get to the hook

Videos like this is why I started my website and youtube channel is to help people like him learn how to use their fishing tackle. I mean it's all about having fun to but not fun if your losing fish. The drag on that reel sounds like it was a bit too loose could've tighten a bit more.
I’m a local around tampa and fishing for skyway has lots of fish you can catch. Grouper Spanish mackerel w tarpon etc. To catch grouper, around 6/0 circle should be good with 80lbs leader with a medium size pinfish for Spanish mack small long shank j hook with a thread fin/ greenback
I am waiting to catch my first grouper. We will head back over to Skyway at some point but we have been fishing between St. Augustine and New Smyrna Beach right now.
When you set your rod on the pier it needs to have loose drag so it doesn't get pulled in when a fish bites. When the fish has your bait tighten the drag so it doesn't take you in a rock or piling
I have tried this but at times they are so quick you will not have time to tighten the drag in time before they take it into the rocks or piling. :-) I go in-between, what I mean is that I will loosen the drag slightly but angle the pole enough to where the top two eyelets are above the rail on the pier or bridge. This seems to work better, for me at least.
