I particularly loved the part in the audiobook where Stephen King plays the voice of the tape recording Mr. Bowditch left Charlie. Nice little easter egg. I also loved that the audiobook made that tape recording sound just like a real tape recording by having static and fuzz in it. Such a nice touch, I loved the detail.
I liked the book overall, first half much more than the second, the middle just got a tad monotonous for me and went in a direction I didn't care for too much. LOVED the ending.
    4/5 for me, great book.

Hi Mr. Durfee. I really like your review. It’s nice that you didn’t spoil the book. I think for a Constant Reader, this latest novel of his is a return to form. The book starts out innocuously with sketches of characters in a small town with plucky young protagonist and later a wonderful dog too. The early half of the book despite no supernatural incidents is a joy to read / listen. Highly recommends. The audible voice narration is possibly one of the best I’ve heard. Not just a narration but a tour de force of a performance. With that great cameo by Stephen King.

Lots of memorable lines and turns of phrase.
I was really tickled by Charlie’s references to Cujo, having watched it as a kid. Not so much because of the horror element (althouth I might be too early in the book to tell) but because of the way King writes his child protagonists and the backa and forth they have in the scenes where they communicate with adults. Very Americana and very late 80s/early 90s Sandlot feel. Couldn't wait for it to arrive by mail so I downloaded it and started reading it on my phone. Better than scrolling Facebook and Instagram so far bya a long shot. 😁

I didn't read Eye of The Dragon, but I read the whole Dark Tower series. If you don't think The Dark Tower is fantasy, then I don't know what you are looking for? Sure it's not kiddie fantasy with fairies and princesses and kings. However it takes place in a fantastic(fantasy) world, filled with magical creatures and talking/riddiling trains. If you don't consider this fantasy then you obviously picture fantasy as Disney only and that is just one type of fantasy.

Finished this book yesterday. It was cute, I guess. King clearly wanted to bring in elements of our favorite fantasy stories, while also bringing his contemporary take to the genre. Overall though, I feel it fell flat due to his tendancy to bring in elements from other stories, while also neglecting to bring the flavor of those stories to the page.
For example (spoilers) the BBEG at the end of the story is an Eldeitch Horror, but King fails to properly describe the horror/experience in a way that we might expect from Lovectaft or Ligotti... King doesnt HAVE to do those things, but he didnt even try to capture the flavor of those kinds of stories, leaving me wondering why he even felt the need to incorporate those elements.

King is my wife and my favorite author.. I’m hesitant to read it because I also have a German shepherd that’s described in the book exactly like her.. I have to get past that.. thank you again king.. you truly are

This is the 2nd SK book that I had to put down and call a loss. The 1st half was ok. Then it bogged down into a chore. I began reading thinking it was going to get exciting or horrifying or interesting just to be met with more boring reading. They get into this magical land and it's just mundane... I can't recommend this book to anyone.

i’ll tell you what as far as a review goes I feel this was a little lacking. But one thing you did accomplish was to motivate me to get off my ass and start writing for myself. Because surely if someone has poorly spoken as yourself who constantly trips over your words and hunts for the right adjective, can write a book then surely I should be able to string together a few sentences of interest.

I wish I could read that fast(and retain what I've read). I pretty much read at performance speed in my head. :) so it takes me a long time. But I enjoy my performance. :)

I completely agree. I was waiting and waiting and waiting for the book to get going. This is definitely not my favorite SK book. A bit disappointed.

One of the worst Stephen King books of all time. The second half was probably written by James Patterson.

Nice review! I've got my spoiler review up as well. I thought it was good, but not great. I gave it 3 stars. I think a lot of people will love it, but I had some issues with it. I actually really enjoyed the first third of the book, before we get into the fantasy world. The second of the half of the book wasn't as great for me. I was slightly underwhelmed with it. Great video!

Question, I'm about to read but I'm having a rough time lately and can't handle tragedies. Does this book have a happy ending? I'd rather not read a trainwreck of tragedies at the moment. Thanks in advance guys. I googled it but I'm trying to avoid major spoilers.
