  • Over the last year, this 1915 Myers machine lathe has been thoroughly restored, from gear repair to paint and polish. Once the second clutch on the countershaft is ready, the lathe will be able to run in both directions, controlled by a lever on the countershaft. Stay tuned for lathe experiments like taper turning between centres.

    We're looking at one in a million and I'm not talking about the classic old Myers Lathe. Today's male youth are mostly heads full of mush. It's hard to distinguish them from their female counterparts. It must have been difficult for him to find male friends to share and collaborate on projects. His Dad and Grandpa must be damn proud too! I subscribed within the first few minutes of being invited into his Line Drive shop! Best of luck kid!

    Great video. A few weeks ago i was given a lathe much like this one. It's on the ground floor but i don't have anyone to help me carrying it so i will have do disassemble it as much as possible. Comes with a electric motor and a car gearbox attached! Might convert it back to belt drive.

    Beautiful job! I've been reading (and re-reading :) ) Dave Gingery's book on building your own lathe, and with this video you can definitely see where he took inspiration!

    Hi, have you tested the accuracy of the spindle and the chuck? I was told they are not very accurate (even compared to new chinese imports) but they do seem well-built to me.
    I actually just got my 1st lathe 2 weeks ago (Weiler). There still are plenty of these older lathes (well, mostly Richter and similar) in Europe going for sale.

    Very well done! I had a chuckle at the shimmed keyway - it may look like a bodge-job, but who's to blame if it lasted over a hundred years? xD

    how much does the bed weight without all the accesories head and even leg i think about buying one but i need to get it downstair somehow

    • @castironmachines
      @castironmachines  Год назад +1

      The stripped bed could be carried by two good sized people, I removed it from a truck box alone but slowly. I'd guess it weighs 250-300lbs

    I have one that is very similar and the carriage is very tight and so it won’t slide back and forth how do I adjust that?

    • @castironmachines
      @castironmachines  Год назад +1

      Depending on the type, there is a tightening/locking bolt on the top rear or back of the carriage. It can be tightened to pinch the bed, maybe yours is set too tight. It could otherwise be the adjustable gib key used to compensate for wear, or too much grit and dirt has gotten into the ways and makes it difficult to move the carriage. Cheers

    Beautiful job!! What did you have to pay for the dirty before restored version. I found a 200 year old foot pedal lathe that had been converted to motor for $400 a year ago.

      I believe this one ran me 750, normally the larger ones are cheaper but this one still had the countershaft, all change gears and steady rest so it was worth it. I'd love to run this shop on steam some day too.

    So do you know if those gears are made of cast Iron of high carbon steel.

    • @castironmachines
      @castironmachines  Месяц назад

      Based on the surface finish in the grooves/ spokes of the original gears, they are cast iron.

    I cringe everytime i see people that “restore” old stuff like this, and they wont wipe of matching surfaces. They go from a dirty as heck workbench, directly to final assembly.
    I guess its ok for automotive, or oil field type FOB 🤷🏻‍♂️
    Nice machine though, nice find.
