Me and my friends were saying Nani back in the early 2000's before we knew Fist of the North Star even existed. DBZ and Naruto used it a lot. Vegeta used to say it a lot.
Some words are just cool, no matter the language you natively speak. Adios and Ciao, for example. Nani just happens to be one of them, it's more dramatic than "what" so it's fun to use instead.
Nani?! has become a meme basically because it's been in countless anime, but Fist of the North Star and JoJo's really popularized it, especially Fist of the North Star back in the day with the classic exchange of "Omae wa mou shindeiru" "Nani?!" that has videos all over RUclips of just that part happening, lol. It's also one of the simplest and easiest things to pick up when watching anime in general, and tends to be said in cool/hype moments where the hero (or even the villain sometimes) turns the tables ;)
Jojo and Fist of the North Star are what it's attributed to because it's both a popular and very extreme example.....but tons of anime have scenes of characters going "Nani?!!!". And yeah, in English it's not uncommon for people to go "What?!" when something shocks them, but it's not used as often or as dramatically. I've never seen a single episode of Jojo or Fist of the North Star, but I absolutely understood the humor behind random English speakers on the internet going "NANI?!!!!!" in the comments section of Japan-related videos way back when it started going around.
I think the reason it felt fake Japanese was because he was simply using 1 word instead of long sentences which is how most people will talk in their languages
me literally tells my little brother that i knew Japanese and i only knew few random words I don't even know meaning like Nani , omie va shindo, Niiisan , oni chan, kimochi yamato,😂
Don't mind me, just a weeb who learns Japanese from anime :) 0:11 : It's the opposite way, right? 1:05 : You're terrible 1:28 : 'Idiot...' Well, it's not odd. I can understand it. 1:43 : But, well, we/I use this 2:10 : Wait. Is this the same person? 2:39 : I feel sorry for him 3:30 : Is that so? Well that could be the case 3:47 : I don't use this I love it when you guys shit on his weaboo pronunciation, especially for 'sayonara' xddd
Like, I don't speak it because it's cringe speaking when u don't know the language but phrases that are used often in anime are easier to remember. Just like "Nani?!". It is also easy to say.
