You asked why he showed Donald Trump at 8:37? Probably because right then he was talking about Tokugawa Ieyasu being the most rich and powerful of the five contenders for the throne; Bill Wurtz made this video in 2017, IIRC.
“Monkey fun” is a pun on the Japanese name of that style of theater, “Sarugaku” because the character for saru means monkey and one of the translations of the character for gaku is fun. So he’s making a joke by using the literal translation of sarugaku rather than the actual name.

@@hydnastridenti can’t speak on japanese but in chinese we have many words pronounced very similarly to each other, for example there’s a bit of a chinese meme where people started calling alpacas “草泥马” (pronounced cǎonímǎ) which literally means “grass mud horse,” to avoid being censored on the internet, because there’s also a term ”肏你妈” (pronounced càonǐmā）which means “fuck your mother”
there’s a long continuation of the meme but the most well known continuation is that the grass mud horse’s habitat is being taken over by “河蟹”(héxìe）or “river crab” which is another homophone for the term ”和谐” (héxíe) meaning “harmonious society,” which is a term used to justify internet censorship
So that's what the joke is! That's great.

As a non-westerner I find it a bit iffy that because Japan attacked their forward military base, America just firebombed the shit out of their civilians and nuked them. A bit of a contrast to the European theater where pretty much everyone suffered, the Pacific looks a bit lopsided.

And I'm not saying that as a "Yeah, Murica!" bullshit mentality, but from a reasonable standpoint. The Emperor would have commanded the civilians to fight too - which would mean slaughtering until they just could not fight back.
It's a horrific thing that we did, and that sin is on our hands. But the death toll that would have come if we hadn't used those bombs is far worse, as you have said. Its a disgusting, horrifying truth. But truth all the same.
In Finland, we were also taught that Japan won the war, and Russia losing the war to Japan was one of the major reasons (combined with the disaster that was ww1) why the revolution happened and thanks to the revolution Finland could declare itself independent from Russia/ The Soviet Union

@@Myjacob99 Well this video was before the Ukraine war when everyone still thought Russia was scary and it seemed like a good idea to avoid offending them.
Japan won the war, it's just that it was a limited war thus a (kind of) limited victory. Russia didn't commit 1/10th of what they committed for WW1. That being said, considering their lack of navy and the huge distance, I don't know if they could have done more at all. Russia was at its weakest in 1905, even just 9 years later for WW1 they'll be completely different.
We learned the same thing in America.

As an American, I think one of my high school world history classes said that Japan beat Russia and that it was considered a major underdog victory at the time
Yeah, this video glosses over a lot, but I do wish they mentioned how Russia sent their "big bad navy" (actually a bunch of undisciplined drunks) and the naval battle that ensued did not end well for the Russians. Basically, Japan had forced Russia to send its baltic fleet to Japan because their Pacific Fleet was blockaded. Of course the Baltic fleet was Russia's Pride and joy. Unfortunately for them it turned out they were incompetent as all hell and got their asses handed to them.
Fact is any half decent navy would have defeated the Baltic fleet, it's always been a paper tiger. Unfortunately Japan did not know this soo yeah.
The bay the Russian fleet was sent to defend was mined at the mouth. The fleet was nearly defeated before battle. Grossly incompetent.
As an American, I don't think I learned about this war because they were teaching us about Teddy Roosevelt beating up the Spanish instead or something. And then when I took world history in Uni we made it to the 1870s before the class ended because the teacher constantly went on tangents about stuff that didn't matter.
It was a big deal. It was the first time that a major European country had lost a war to a non-European country since the glory days of the Ottoman Empire. If you count the Ottomans as European, then it was the first time since the Mongol Empire. It humiliated Russia, and caused so much unrest in Russia that it caused a political revolution. It caused Europe to treat Japan seriously, as an equal, rather than as just some backwater.

Usually Japanese humor doesn't translate very well but there were a couple of times I legitimately laughed out loud. Bravo 😂

In Polish the word for Sunrise and East are the same word. Same with West and Sunset, North and Midnight and South and Noon.

it is true the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905 Japan won, but the peace treaty was helped negotiated by President Teddy Roosevelt. He won a Nobel Peace Prize for this.

Sarugaku (猿楽 monkey music) was a type of theater in Japan (11th-14th centuries) that was really, really popular. Think of 猿楽 similar but not exactly like what we today (at least in Western & European countries) call the circus. It had acrobatics, juggling, pantomime, occasionally they would add or incorporate drums. The monkey part is because of the acrobatics and the fun comes from the music and entertainment.

Even as an American I still enjoyed the jokes about us
In America, we had a high school history class debate assignment about the atomic bombs. There were differences of opinion but everyone agreed it could have been handled better with less civilian deaths.
The way I learned it (American here), is that before either bomb was dropped, Japan was financially and economically tapped out and was looking to surrender. At least one top American general (MacArthur maybe, don't remember for sure) was vehemently against the bombs, said they were unnecessary, and that if Japan were given a way to surrender and still save some face, it would be over.
But Washington wanted to show off our "superiority" to the Soviets, so they decided to test out their new toys.
The US spent an inflation adjusted $34 billion on inventing the atomic bomb their was NO WAY they weren't going to use them.
That sounds very realistic about wanting to scare the soviets. I watched Oppenheimer's interview and he stated it was believed by military intelligence the war would have continued and cost more lives both American and Japanese, so dropping the atom bombs overall saved more people. Even if true it begs the question, is killing 250,000 civilians better than killing 750,000 military personnel? @@robertlawrence2609
@@robertlawrence2609 well did you know it was speculated that japan was actually researching their own nuclear bomb. The reason they didn't unconditionally surrender is that they didn't believe the usa actually completed development. They wanted to surrender on their terms and the us wanted unconditional surrender based off war crimes of the japanese empire, along with various other reasons. War crimes such as releasing the bubonic plague, anthrax and others on small villages full of people. But regardless of all of that, there were strategic influences in where the bombs were dropped. But there were also miscalculations in how many people would lose their lives and how many people would be affected. There were other bombing spots that were suggested to minimize the damage to citizens. But they were hardly sure if the bomb was even going to work, or what it would even do.
Nz here, we were taught that the US wanted to end the war without any more soldiers dying
If it makes you feel any better, many modern Dutch have realized their language is completely useless, too. That's why most of them speak German and English, too.
Also I think his point about the war with Russia just stopping was that it was a relatively fast war. You definitely did win, though (if you look at his map, he shows all the territory Japan took from Russia).

The "Japan Name Controversy" was solved in a very characteristic manner by Empress Wu Zetian. At the time, Japan had sent another envoy asking if pretty please the Chinese could stop calling them "midgets". Now, Wu Zetian was a busy woman: she had an empire to run, enemies to execute and lovers to bone, so she decided that, yeah, whatever, let's call "tiny-town" the "Land of the Rising Sun" instead. But she also knew that she couldn't really act as if Japan was an equal empire to China or she'd never hear the end of it. So she issued an imperial proclamation, where she ORDERED "tiny-town" to change its name to "Land of the Rising Sun" immediately or face punishment. This anecdote really tells you all you need to know about Chinese foreign policy throughout history xD

As a Norwegian, I love watching videos like this, as it shows hisotry from a different perspective. In Norway, we are taught in great detail about the viking age for example, which was a small period of time during the middle ages (for the rest of the world) were, as guessed, we were vikings. We also are taught well about how war started in europe, and also our involvments and such in the wars, but know very little of the eastern countries happenings in the wars, except for the pearl harbour attacks and the nukes. So watching this was not only intresting but also really funny, with all the jokes and silly faces.
As a Dutch person living in Japan I would like to add that when Dejima/Nagasaki port was opened in 1571 (450th anniversary is this year) The Netherlands were at the height of their golden age and arguably one of the if not the most powerful nation on earth. So it's not too crazy to think that Dutch was a world language... at the time. It has to be said that most Japanese people, even those tasked with interpretation, were comically bad at speaking/reading Dutch. To the point that a German, Engelbert Kaempfer, was smuggled into Japan by a Dutch ship through the captain calling him a "Mountain Dutchman". The Netherlands literally has no mountains.

American here. This vid by ol Wurtz is indeed great.
A bit of information about the atom bombs. There’s no denying they were terrible, but they weren’t the default option. We had Operation Downfall planned, which was invading Japan itself. To say nothing of the civilians who would have surely suffered, our own boys would’ve had a nightmare to face. To put this into perspective, there’s a medal we Americans award to those killed or wounded in battle called the “Purple Heart.” We made a stockpile of them for Operation Downfall so massive we’re still handing them out of that very same stockpile as of today.
Part of the reason the bombs were used was to avoid that possibility. It’s one of those morbid facts of reality that are understandably difficult to talk about.

It’s still kinda funny watching Americans vs Japanese reactions in this video mainly. “Who is Commodore Perry?” From Americans vs “ah Matthew Perry, we know this name very well.” From Japanese reactors. For Americans Commodore Perry didn’t do very much. He never accomplished much. But for the Japanese the man changed the course of their entire history.
I liked that comment about _Power Rangers,_ though I see the screenshots you used are purely from _Super Sentai._ I want to point out, just in case you're unaware, the show we got in the west was a weird Frankenstein mess where they used the fighting scenes (in the costumes and with the robots) from _Sentai_ (originally based on _Zyuranger_ ) but completely rewrote the rest of the show around them (basically all the parts where the heroes' faces are seen, plus a few where they're wearing the costumes), casting American actors and setting them in an American setting with different plots, while voicing over scenes of the villains, and of course putting their own theme song on it. In fact, instead of saying it was rewritten, it might be better to say it was a completely different show in the same genre that looked like _Sentai_ in some parts.

Often history is taught as a series of events that "just happen", and the underlying causes are often too complex to explore fully, at least in these kinds of summaries - but the causes *are* important, and give more of a tangible shape to history.
Yep, current technology of the day and control of those resources to fuel those technologies is probably the most major reason for modern warfare. Whale oil was how most of the civilised world was lit by lighting then. The industry was absolutely massive to meet the massive demand and spanned the globe.

As a American, I'm sorry all that happened. About your question to what "monkey fun" is; I watched Lina's Japan Journal react to this video, and she is a japanese historian, who knows a lot more about japanese history than most western historian (givin that it is her home country), and she explains all those little details. If you are interested in those tid-bits, she is quite cool to check out, as she is not an ass about the common mistakes made in the video, but properly explains everything interestingly from her viewpoint as a historian.
